1756-CNB, -CNBR, ControlLogix ControlNet Interface Modules Described Below Ref: ACIG Date: November 2004 Dear Rockwell Automation Customer, The purpose of this Product Service Advisory is to inform you of a functional issue that exists with: 1756-CNB, -CNBR, ControlLogix ControlNet Interface, Series A, Firmware Revisions 1.19 and earlier 1756-CNB, -CNBR ControlLogix ControlNet Interface, Series B, Firmware Revisions 2.27 and earlier 1756-CNB, - CNBR, ControlLogix ControlNet Interface, Series C, Firmware Revisions 4.24 and earlier 1756-CNB, -CNBR, ControlLogix ControlNet Interface, Series D, Firmware Revisions 5.44 and earlier This Advisory explains the functional issue and the steps being taken to rectify the situation.
Page 2 - Problem Description - With the products listed on page 1, hereafter referred to as the ControlNet module, the following functional issue exists: Functional Issue Continuous Operation Prevents Additional Unconnected Communications IMPORTANT: If you are not running the ControlNet module for continuous operation (i.e., 497 days-- approximately 16.5 months--with no power cycles or intervening reset), this issue does not affect you. This functional issue will NOT affect you if you cycle power to or reset the ControlNet module for any reason (e.g., routine shutdown, RIUP, redundancy switchover) sooner than every 497 days. Users that may run the ControlNet module for 497 days are likely to exist in such applications as batch operations, the semiconductor industry and environmental controls. After 497 days of uninterrupted continuous operation, an internal counter on the ControlNet module that tracks unscheduled message connection time-outs rolls over. When the rollover occurs, the ControlNet module no longer manages connections as expected, and the module s unconnected buffers eventually become unavailable. The ControlNet module should close message connections after their use and always keep some portion of the 20 unconnected buffer resources available for additional messaging. However, because of this functional issue, the ControlNet module does not close message connections after the rollover occurs; the unconnected buffer resources soon become unavailable. The result of the ControlNet module s unconnected buffer being unavailable is that you can no longer communicate with the module via unconnected messaging. Some examples of how module services are affected when the rollover occurs include: Unconnected message connections that are passed to or through the ControlNet module fail Any attempt to go online with a controller through the ControlNet module fails (i.e., programming terminal connection fails) Establishing or re-establishing I/O connections fails Browsing to or through the module via RSLinx fails CPU % utilization reading quickly goes to 100% and remains there When this functional issue exists, both scheduled connections and message connections continue to work. However, if a scheduled message or message connection is dropped for any reason, the module will not reestablish that connection.
Page 3 -Temporary Workarounds - To work around the functional issue, cycle power to the ControlNet module more often than every 497 days. For Redundancy Systems, to work around this issue, perform two switchovers. Two switchovers will reset the ControlNet modules in the primary and secondary chassis and make sure the chassis return to their original status (i.e., the primary chassis will still be the primary chassis). However, only the ControlNet modules in the primary and secondary chassis are reset. You must still reset the ControlNet modules in any remote chassis connected to the Redundancy System. - Product Identification - Product affected by this Product Service Advisory includes the following ControlNet products: 1756-CNB, -CNBR, ControlLogix ControlNet Interface, Series A, Firmware Revisions 1.19 and earlier 1756-CNB, -CNBR, ControlLogix ControlNet Interface Series B, Firmware Revisions 2.27 and earlier 1756-CNB, - CNBR, ControlLogix ControlNet Interface, Series C, Firmware Revisions 4.24 and earlier 1756-CNB, -CNBR, ControlLogix ControlNet Interface, Series D, Firmware Revisions 5.44 and earlier Rockwell Automation is shipping the affected products until the corrected firmware is released. The affected ControlNet modules began shipping in April The corrected firmware is scheduled for release in December 2004.
Page 4 - Problem Correction - To correct the functional issue, upgrade your ControlNet product to the latest firmware revision. The functional issue has been corrected in the following versions of the ControlNet products: 1756-CNB, -CNBR, ControlLogix ControlNet Interface, Series B, Firmware Revision CNB, -CNBR, ControlLogix ControlNet Interface, Series D, Firmware Revision 5.45 For Redundancy Systems, version 13, use the upgraded Series D, Firmware Revision 5.45 module IMPORTANT: Note the following information. If you are using 1756-CNB, -CNBR, ControlLogix ControlNet Interface, Series A, you must either flash upgrade to the corrected Series B module or use the workaround described previously. If you are using 1756-CNB, -CNBR, ControlLogix ControlNet Interface, Series C, Firmware Revision 4.24 or earlier, you must either upgrade to the corrected Series D module or use the workaround. If you choose to upgrade to a Series D module, you must obtain a new module. This upgrade cannot be completed via a flash upgrade that is common to other Series changes. For Redundancy Systems, versions 8 and 11, you must either upgrade to version 13 (and use the upgraded Series D module) or use the workaround described previously. The corrected firmware is expected to be available in December 2004.When the corrected firmware becomes available, you can obtain it from the following location: Until the corrected firmware becomes available, we recommend that you use the temporary workaround described earlier.
Page 5 -Requested Customer Action- Each notified customer should take the following actions: Confirm that you have the affected products. Immediately contact your local Rockwell Automation Sales and Support office to determine the appropriate course of action. Together, you and the local office will determine the correction for your situation. If you require any further technical assistance, contact Rockwell Automation Technical Support ( or RACleAskTheExpert@ra.rockwell.com) or your local Rockwell Automation Sales and Support office. We require and appreciate your immediate cooperation in this matter. If you have any questions, please contact us.
