Chapter 1 Introduction Rev A 1
Chapter 1 Introduction Appliance concept The Plasmon UDO Archive Appliance (hereafter referred to as Appliance) is a Network Attached Storage device (NAS), which supports UDO technology. Data files can be efficiently stored and retrieved via a single TCP/IP network connection. Being an integrated solution, all components including a server, raided disks and jukebox automation are contained within a single UDO library. UDO technology UDO (Ultra Density Optical) is the new 30GB standard for professional optical storage. Based on ultra density, blue laser technology, it is the recognized successor to 5.25 inch MO (Magneto Optical) storage and is available in both Rewritable and true Write Once media formats. Blue lasers achieve far greater data densities, resulting in dramatically higher media capacities. First generation UDO products have a capacity of 30GB, with capacity reaching 120GB by the third generation. 2 Plasmon UDO Archive Appliance
Appliance concept Libraries Library range The following Plasmon libraries (with their Appliance model numbers in parenthesis) support the new UDO format: Gx24/32 (AA24/32) Gx80 (AA80) Gx174 (AA174) G238/438/638 (AA234/AA438/AA638) Library components A library in a Appliance contains the following components: Dual Picker Transfers UDO media between drives, media slots and Mailslot (IEE). Drives The number of drives available for reading/writing media is modeldependent: AA24/32 = 2 AA80 = 2 or 4 AA174 = 2 or 4 AA238/AA438/AA638 = 2 or 4 Barcode reader Reads the unique identifier on each UDO disk. Media slots Internal slots housing UDO media. Mailslot (IEE) For inserting and removing UDO media. Operator s Guide Rev A 3

This chapter explains the following: How to offline media see page 17 Return requests see page 18 How to return offline media see page 19 Library slot maps see page Plasmon UDO Archive Appliance
Storage of offline media Storage of offline media When media is not in the Appliance it can become contaminated due to the ingress of dust particles and is also susceptible to adverse temperature and relative humidity. It must therefore be stored appropriately to prevent damage or degradation. Recommendations Plasmon recommend that the media be stored in the plastic sleeve in which it was supplied and in accordance with the following temperature and humidity limits: Table 31. UDO operating and storage conditions Parameter Value/range Temperature 5 to 45 C Humidity 5 to 90% RH (noncondensing) Plasmon recommend the use of a media rack, such as those produced by Engineered Data Products, for the long term storage of offline media. Operator s Guide Rev A 15
Chapter 3 Offline Media Management Organising offline media To aid location following Offline media return requests, offline media should be sorted using the last three characters of the barcode label, as follows: Organise groups of media using the last two numeric characters (i.e. groups of barcodes *****35, where the * represents any other character), then within these groups sort alphabetically using the third from last alpha character (i.e. within the barcodes numbered *****35, sort to ****A35, ****B35, etc.) and then finally sort alphabetically using the remaining characters of the barcode. Note: Barcode labels use an alphanumeric/colour system to aid in this organisational process. The barcode label number associated with a piece of media is unique. An example group of organised, offline media is shown below: To locate a piece of offline media: Locate the group of offline media using the last two characters of the barcode in the return request, then within that group search using the third from last character and then using the whole barcode. 16 Plasmon UDO Archive Appliance
