JCP USER GUIDE This Guide describes the functions provided by the Diamond Jukebox Control Program (JCP). NOTE: The JCP can also be used to control stand-alone drives. Selecting 'JCP' from the Diamond program group starts the program (Figure 1). Figure 1. WinNT Program Group A Page 5
Figure 2. The JCP (for a System with a Library) STATUS Pull down the Status menu to reveal a list of the mounted file systems (Figure 3). Only one library file system will be shown, regardless of the number of libraries attached to the system, as libraries are all grouped together as a single, large logical library. Figure 3. Pull Down Menu Under Status Stand-alone drives in the system will appear independently in the list. Choose the appropriate file system. If an error appears saying that there are no drives or libraries to control, then start Diamond and ensure device mappings are set up correctly. Choosing a stand-alone drive file system will give information about the disk in the drive, including whether or not there is a disk in the drive, how much free space is available (this information is also available using an operating system utility) and the disk name. Choosing the library file system will display a window containing the following information for each disk side in the library: Slot Type Name Free Space ID The slot number of the disl within the library The Type of disk The volume name of the disk Space available on the disk The ID of the disk DIAMOND - ADMINISTRATOR GUIDE Page 6
Figure 4. Jukebox Status There are also hardware and software status options. Hardware status is particularly useful for determining which drive letter (or mount point) relates to a specific physical device. This option also shows firmware revision levels. Figure 5. Hardware Status The software status option shows the Diamond version number and the machine id A Page 7
IMPORT DEEP MOUNTS NOTE: In order to enable the import function when using the JCP, the import-ui line in MANAGER.CFG must be changed from: Import_ui = c:\ntmgr2\ovmimport.exe to: Import_ui = c:\ntmgr2/impui.exe Diamond allows disks to be mounted anywhere within the library directory and even within other disks. However, there are a few rules to follow. See DEEP MOUNTS Appendix K. You can mount disks in two ways: 1. By entering the path of the directory where you would like the disk to be mounted in the 'Mount to' field. 2. By clicking on the tree button to reveal the directory structure of the library to allow visual selection of the mount point. REFORMATTING Clicking on 'Reformat' will change the interface. The name you wish to assign to the disk can now be typed in the space provided. When all the settings are correct, click on the OK button. The import operation will proceed. TO IMPORT A CD-ROM DISK CD and DVD libraries normally provide two ways in which new disks may be added to the system: 1. Mailslot loading: Single disks may be imported or exported via the mailslot (CD/DVD drawer). 2. Magazine loading: Multiple disks may be bulk imported and exported by opening the magazine door and exchanging magazines. Choose the Single CD submenu from the Import menu (Figure 6). Figure 6. Pull Right Menu Under Import Single CD DIAMOND - ADMINISTRATOR GUIDE Page 8
This will move an empty CD tray (if one exists) to the mailslot, and also start an import dialogue similar to the one shown in Figure 7. Naturally, CD-ROM disks cannot be reformatted so selecting this option will cause an error. TO ADD / REMOVE A MAGAZINE Figure 7. The Import Dialogue Figure 8. Pull Right Menu Under Magazine Door The magazine door will not open if there is a disk in a drive so you may have to wait before selecting Open Magazine door. Once the drives have been unloaded, the door opens automatically and you can make any changes. After the door is closed, Diamond performs the following actions: 1. Magazines, or CD's within a CD Magazine that have been removed, are automatically stored off-line with OVM. 2. Magazines subject to OVM that have been put back into the library are automatically imported and OVM is updated. 3. Diamond looks at each disk in turn and matches it against the OVM record. If any discrepancies are found, an import dialogue is generated for that disk. 4. Diamond generates an import dialogue for each new disk in new magazines that are added A Page 9
IMPORT FROM SLOT Figure 9. Import Dialogue for Every New Disk in a New Magazine Figure 10. Pull Right Menu Under Import From Slot Selecting this option will import a disk which is already in a slot and therefore possibly already in the database. Any existing disk information is purged from the database and a standard import begins. DIAMOND - ADMINISTRATOR GUIDE Page 10
Figure 11. Import From Slot EXPORT: (LIBRARY ONLY) Figure 12. Export Menu Export will eject disks from the library(ies). You do not need to use the JCP to remove a disk from a stand-alone drive. Simply press the eject button on the drive and the disk will be ejected if it is not in use. EXPORT Figure 13. Pull Right Menu Under Export When you choose a library under the Export menu, a list of the disks in the library(ies) run by Diamond will pop-up (Figure 13). To select a disk, click on the left-mouse button and press OK to start the export operation. There may be a short delay while database entries are cleared before the disk is exported from the library A Page 11
EXPORT ALL Figure 14. List of Disks to Export If you choose the library file system listed under the Export All pull right menu, all of the disks in the library(ies) will be exported and the database cleared. This operation will wait for you to manually remove each disk/magazine from the Import/Export mail slot before trying to export the next disk/magazine. This option should be used if the library is to be prepared for shipping, or if it is to be physically moved to another location. OFF-LINE VOLUME MANAGEMENT Diamond includes support for Off-line Volume Management (OVM). When media is exported with OVM, the file and directory attributes remain in the database when the disk is removed. The operator can supply a string stating where the media will be stored (for example, 'Safe C, Shelf 21'). JCP status will show the media as being in slot 'off-line', and the offline location will be displayed. The directories and files can still be viewed in directory listings. However, reading/writing files will generate an error and a message in Diamond's Offline Volume Management Log indicating that data was requested by a user from a disk that is currently off-line. When disks are later imported, they are recognized and are imported without rescanning. If you import a disk that has been fully or partially recognized as OVM, you may either accept the import or ignore the request. DIAMOND - ADMINISTRATOR GUIDE Page 12
Figure 15. Off-line Volume Management Menu EXPORT DISK WITH OFF - LINE VOLUME MANAGEMENT Figure 16. Pull Right Menu Under Export Disk with Off-line Volume Management This option allows a disk to be removed from the library leaving the file and directory information viewable to the users, but marked off-line. When a user attempts to access a file on an off-line disk they will receive an error saying that the file is inaccessible. At the same time an event will be written to Diamond's OVM access log, which can be viewed by selecting 'View off-line access log' from the Diamond program group. To bring the disk back on-line, it must be re-imported. The import process will recognize the disk as an off-line managed disk and the data will be immediately available. PURGE DETAILS OF AN OFF-LINE DISK Figure 17. Pull Right Menu Under Purge Details of an Off-Line Disk A Page 13
It is possible to remove the OVM database of a disk that has been lost, destroyed or is no longer to be used in OVM mode. This is called purging an OVM disk. NOTE: The disk cannot be purged unless it has been scanned into the library. UTILITIES HISTORY Figure 18. Utilities Menu for a Library The History option is not applicable for CD and DVD technologies. DIAMOND - ADMINISTRATOR GUIDE Page 14
REPAIR Figure 19. Pull Right Menu Under Repair Pull right from the Repair menu to reveal a list of mounted file systems accessible from the JCP (Figure 20). Select a disk side to initiate the Repair program. Figure 20. List of Disks to Repair Repair is described in detail in the Repair Utility Section A Page 15
CDR CLOSE A CD-R disk is writable when formatted as UDF 1.5. To convert the disk to ISO-9660 format, so that it can be used as a CD-ROM and become read-only, use the CD-R close out option. NOTE: Before attempting CD-R Close Out ensure that Explorer, or any other view of the disk, is closed. WRITE CD-R (TAO) Figure 21. Write CD-R This option is available for CD-R storage devices. Selecting this option displays a list of the ISO images that have been created and are able to be written. Selecting an image allows you to write it to a selected CD-R disk in the storage device. DIAMOND - ADMINISTRATOR GUIDE Page 16
RESCAN DISK SIDE (LIBRARY ONLY) Figure 22. Pull Right Menu Under Rescan Disk The Rescan option is used to reload the Diamond library database for a particular disk in the library. This option is not used under normal circumstances, but could be used if, for example, the repair program has found lost files on a damaged disk in a library. The directory information held in Diamond s database would then be out of date and would need reloading for that disk. Pull right from the Rescan menu and you will see the library file system accessible from the JCP. Choose the library. A pop-up list of the disks in the library(ies) now appears (Figure 23). Select a disk from the list. Diamond will first clear the database of information about the files on that disk. The disk is then scanned and the directory information is reloaded into the database. Figure 23. Rescan Disk A Page 17
RESCAN ALL This option is similar in effect to Rescan disk but will operate in sequence on all the disks in the library, regardless of whether they are already known or not. This is particularly useful if the library database has been deleted for a full system restart. Only one library drive is used to ensure timely data access. Figure 24. Rescan All RESCAN UNKNOWN This option is similar in effect to Rescan disk but operates in sequence on all the disks that are not in Diamond's database. This is particularly useful if the library database has been deleted for a full system restart, or if individual disks have been loaded for immediate data retrieval. DYNAMICALLY RESCAN DISK SIDE Figure 25. Pull Right Menu Under Dynamically Rescan Disk This option allows the disk to be rescanned dynamically during import or rescan operations. This means that only the root directory of the disk is scanned immediately. Further directory/file information is scanned in as needed, generally triggered by a user or application browsing the directory structure. DIAMOND - ADMINISTRATOR GUIDE Page 18
NOTE: If a disk has been dynamically rescanned, it can be subsequently fully scanned, and vice versa. Dynamic rescan can be used in conjunction with Off-line Volume Management and Dynamic mount groups, with the following characteristics: 1. To rescan a directory which is on more than one disk surface (e.g. a mount group), each disk surface is rescanned in turn. NOTE: It will only scan those disks in the mount group that do have the directory. It will do the rescan in an optimized order. Optimizing means that it will rescan disks currently loaded in drives before attempting to rescan directories in disks that are not in drives. 2. To dynamically scan a directory where all the media is subject to Off-line Volume Management, Diamond returns an OFFLINE error to the requesting application. 3. To dynamically scan a directory where some of the media is subject to Off-line Volume Management, Diamond scans the disks it has access to, raises a notification in the OVM event log but does not return an error code. DYNAMICALLY RESCAN ALL DISKS This option is similar in effect to Rescan Disk Dynamically but will operate on all the disks that are in Diamond's database. The file and directory information are scanned into the database dynamically as the user traverses the directory structure of the library. This means that after a severe system failure the administrator can dynamically rescan all operations to get the library up-and-running. This results in an initial root scan of all disks which takes less time than fully scanning all disks. The system is available in a shorter time period but with slightly lower performance because the database is being rebuilt gradually as data is accessed. Later, when the system is free, (e.g. a weekend or holiday) a rescan all command can be performed, thus bringing everything back on line again. At times of low demand a recursive directory listing (at a command prompt dir/s ) can be used to force rescan of a disk platter or part of a library. This can be more easily started or stopped, but unless done from library root, cannot guarantee rescanning the whole library and if done from root will list known directories and files as well (potentially inefficient) A Page 19
DYNAMICALLY RESCAN UNKNOWN DISKS This option is similar in effect to Rescan Disk Dynamically but will operate on all the disk sides that are not in Diamond's database. The file and directory information is scanned into database dynamically as the user traverses the directory structure of the library. BACKUP LIBRARY DATABASE FILE Selecting this option opens a window that allows the user to enter a path name where they would like to back-up the database (Figure 26). Once a path has been entered, selecting 'OK' starts the process. Figure 26. Backup Jukebox Database Files COMPACT DATABASE The database does not dynamically downsize when disks are exported and data is removed. Compaction is the process where the database is reduced in size to match the data stored in it. Selecting this option opens a window that allows the user to enter the number of hours before compaction begins. To schedule the compaction, enter a number and select 'OK'. Figure 27. Compact Database DIAMOND - ADMINISTRATOR GUIDE Page 20
FORMAT DISK (STAND-ALONE ONLY) If you have a stand-alone drive controlled by Diamond, the pull down menu under utilities has an extra option called format disk. (Disks in libraries are formatted during import). Before a disk can be used for the first time, it must be formatted. When choosing this option you will be prompted to enter a volume label and select the file system type to format the disk. Selecting an inappropriate file system gives an EINVAL error message and will not format the media. Formatting typically only takes a few seconds. MOUNTING DISKS IN A STAND-ALONE DRIVE If a formatted disk is put in a drive, the file system will automatically be mounted and become ready for use without further interaction from the user. The disk is ejected from the drive by pressing the drive eject button. If the disk is in use, or file data or directory information have not been updated on the disk, the drive locks and the disk will not eject. If this happens, wait a few seconds for data structures to write to the disk and try again. SHUTDOWN Figure 28. Shutdown Menu This option is a convenient way to unmount a Diamond file system without using an operating system command from the command line. If you wish to make a file system (library or standalone drive) unavailable to applications, choose this option. Select the Shutdown menu and you will see a list of mounted file systems accessible from the JCP. Choose the file system that you wish to unmount. The file system will be unmounted if it is not busy. You will see a pop-up window telling you that the file system is being unmounted. When Diamond file systems are unmounted, the system will be prepared for hardware powerdown. All disks in library drives will be put away in their storage slots, stand-alone drives will be stopped and when all file systems have been unmounted, Diamond will stop running and free the resources that it was using. NOTE: NT operating system requires that you have supervisor privileges to mount or unmount file systems. If you do not have the appropriate privileges when you try this option, a pop-up window will inform you that you are not permitted to use shutdown A Page 21
QUIT Pull down the Quit menu to exit from the JCP. ADDITIONAL UTILITIES In addition to those utilities found under JCP, Diamond Backup and Fast Rescan are also available from the command prompt. BACKUP Diamond Backup is a simple backup utility installed on the same machine. It is designed primarily for use in conjunction with NT Diamond optical library integration software. It will, however, backup data between libraries across the network (see Appendix F, ADVANCED USER INFORMATION ). The program runs in the background as a Windows NT Service and automatically backs up data at the times specified in the schedule configuration file. When Diamond Backup is installed it is added as a system service. This can be seen by opening the 'Services' Control Panel applet. Starting the service can be accomplished either through the Control Panel, or by going to the Program Manager /Start Menu group for Diamond Backup and selecting Start Diamond Backup Service. When started, the service will sleep, but will wake to check its schedule and configuration files every minute until the current time falls within a slot specified in the schedule file. Changes in schedule or configuration will take effect almost immediately when backup is idle. At this time it will attempt to start Backup. To stop the service, select the Stop Diamond Backup Service program item (or go to the 'Services' Control Panel applet and select 'stop'). All output from the Backup service is written to the Windows NT Application Event Log in one of three categories: informational, warning and error. This is where you will find all feedback generated by Backup. For more information about the NT Event Log, see NT's own help. Preparing your Library: The backup disks should be imported into the library with labels of the form xxxxx.bakn. When backup wakes, it scans the Library (or specified target directory - see Using Non Diamond Volumes) for disks with labels of the above format, and backs up data from the appropriate source disk. For example, to backup the data on a disk with label "DISKA", simply import and format a disk with the label "DISKA.BAK". There can be any number of backup disks for a particular source (e.g. "DISKA.BAK2") and these are completely independent. DIAMOND - ADMINISTRATOR GUIDE Page 22
NOTE: Mount groups are not supported as either source or backup target, and backup disks should be of at least the same capacity as the associated source disk. The backup disks should not be altered by any application or person except Diamond Backup. Doing so may cause the backup media to fill up before the source disk. How Target Media Type Affects Backup: If a backup disk is rewritable media then the whole file will be re-copied if the source version changes in any way (although the WORM 'append only' behavior can be forced on rewritable media if so desired. (See Appendix E for advanced configuration options). Creation and last modified time stamps are copied from the source files and applied to the backup copies. However, security descriptors currently are not. Controlling the Times When Backup Will Run: Diamond Backup only runs during the times specified in the schedule.cfg configuration file, present in the directory on which you install backup. This file is plain text and can be edited by choosing Edit schedule.cfg from the Diamond Backup program group. Entries will appear as: <always or idle> <days> <start> <stop> Currently, <always> and <idle> are synonyms. In the future, 'idle' will cause backup to run at the specified time if the system is not in use. <days> is a list of days when this time slot is available. 1 is Monday and 7 is Sunday. <start> and <stop> are times in 24 hour format. If <stop> is less than <start>, then the finish time is interpreted as being on the following day (which does not have to be explicitly specified in the days list). For example, a schedule file could contain: always always These entries would cause backup to run every day between 9pm and 7am the following morning, and between 9pm Friday and 12 noon Saturday A Page 23
FAST RESCAN The standard rescan option available from the JCP is single threaded. Consequently it only allows disks to be rescanned one after another. This is inefficient if you have a multiple drive library. Therefore, a command line method has been provided to allow multiple, simultaneous rescans. The command line rescan can be found in the Diamond home directory under NT. The number of times rescan should be run from the command prompt should be limited to the number of optical drives attached. Failure to do so causes inefficient disk swapping. At the command prompt you should input the id of each disk requiring rescan. The disk id can be found by running the JCP and viewing the library status, or by typing: vollist from the command prompt when in the directory where you will be running rescan. THE REPAIR UTILITY On JCP, the Repair option is available under the Utilities menu. NOTE: Repair only functions on Plasmon and UDF format disks. Pull right from the Repair menu to reveal a list of mounted file systems accessible from the JCP. Selecting a disk side initiates the Repair program. A menu bar appears on the screen when the Repair program is started. This menu bar contains three pull-down menus: Start, Quit and Help. There is also a Repair configuration file which allows you to configure how you would like Repair to run. This file is called repair.cfg and can be found in the Diamond home directory. DIAMOND - ADMINISTRATOR GUIDE Page 24
Figure 29. Calling the Repair Utility The options allowed from Repair.CFG are detailed below. Memory_mapped_file: This is the path and file name of the file which holds the sector map and is generated during Repair. Make sure you have enough space. This requires 12 bytes per sector. Tmp_file_path: This is a path and file name for any temporary files generated during Repair. File_copy_path: This is the path for any files recovered from the media if the Off Disk Repair option is selected. Read_all_sectors: If set to 1, Repair reads all the sectors on the optical. If set to 0, Repair skips data that is inferred as user data. Default is 0. Fs_dbg_file: Path for the file system debug file (optional). Map_dbg_file: Path for the sector map debug (optional). Repair_log_file: Path for the Repair Log file. This is where all Repair output messages are stored (optional). on_disk_recovery: If set to 0, then corrupted files will be extracted. If set to 1, then Repair will attempt to recover the files by modifying the disk. Default is 0. Start: Pulling down the start menu will initiate the Repair program. A pop-up window will display the progress of the repair process. If you have selected the option to perform an Off Disk Repair, then a question box will allow you to confirm that the directory you have given for the recovered data is correct A Page 25
Repair will determine which of the file systems supported by Diamond exist on the disk surface and will then create a sector map. This is used in the second stage of the process that determines which sectors contain user data and which contain file system information. If the disk is in a library and the files were recovered by this utility, use the Rescan Disk option from the JCP menu bar to reload the Diamond database with the recovered files. Otherwise the files will not be found in the library directory listings. This is not necessary if the disk is in a standalone drive because the Diamond database is not used for stand-alone drives. Quit: Selecting the Quit menu shuts down the Repair program and sends a message to Diamond saying that Repair has finished using this disk. Help: Selecting the Help menu will produce a window containing a limited amount of information about the Repair program. The Nature of Disk Repair: The purpose of the Repair utility is to repair data structures on a damaged or corrupted disk. This corruption can happen if the computer system loses power during a write operation, or it could be caused by a combination of software, hardware and media failures. The Repair utility carries out a detailed inspection of the media and detects any corruption or file system format inconsistencies. By reading disk sectors, the Repair utility creates a disk map in which the type and the position of each sector are recorded. From this map, the utility can find all the data recorded on the disk and, depending on the extent of corruption, rebuild the file system structures which control the access of data. If a disk is found to be corrupt and the option to perform an On Disk Repair is set, Repair will try and mend the broken data structures on the disk. Alternatively, if the Off Disk option is set, Repair will copy all the files available to the path detailed in repair.cfg. If the file system structures are corrupt and unreadable, Repair will most likely be able to recover the data in the file but not the file name itself. In this case, Repair will assign a number to the file name. This number relates to the sector number where the start of the file was found. NOTE: DVD disks can be repaired but CD-R disks cannot. DIAMOND - ADMINISTRATOR GUIDE Page 26
ADMINISTRATION CONFIGURATION Servers: This dialogue allows the Diamond servers, that can be configured via the menus, to be set up. Enter the IP address of the server, making it available to the user via the Virtual CD menu. Server List: A list of servers will appear that have disks set up in the database. NOTE: The list will not include all servers on the network. ACCOUNTS From here the administrator is able to create and delete accounts and change passwords. The default account Admin / Admin will be created when entering the dialogue, if the PASSWORDS.TXT file does not exist. This account can be deleted and new accounts created. If there are no accounts when the account administration is closed, the default Admin / Admin account will be recreated. User Name: An existing user name can be selected or a new user name can be entered. The user name is case sensitive. NOTE: Password/Confirm Password: Assign a password for a user here. NOTE: The password is case sensitive. New: Selecting this option clears the fields, enabling a new account to be created. Delete: This option deletes the selected user account. Save: This option saves the selected user account A Page 27
BROWSE NETWORK The left hand side of the screen shows the servers available on the local network. Double click on an item, or select the + box to expand it and view the servers or shares contained. CURRENT MENU DEFINITIONS The right hand side of the screen shows the menus that are currently set up. NOTE: The tree shows the network name that has been set up rathe then the long name. Selecting an item on this list will show all of the details that have been stored in the database. SHORT NAME The network path reflects the selection made when browsing the network or viewing the current configurations. It cannot be edited. LONG NAME This option allows the administrator to map the disk label to a full descriptive name and additional help text. The final menus use the long name provided here, allowing the administrator to create a menu that has meaningful CD names. DESCRIPTION This allows a full description to be given to the contents of the disk being mapped to. The description expands on the information provided by the long name. The user can view the description via the Details... option in the menu. GROUP This allows a group to be specified from the menu in which the disk should reside. Either an existing group can be selected or the name of new group can be entered. AUTO RUN Only top level groups are allowed. NOTE: Users are able to simulate the Auto Run feature of many Windows 95 and Windows NT CDs. If the file AUTORUN.INF is found in the root of the disk being examined, Auto Run is enabled. Checking Auto Run allows a user to simulate Auto Run from the menu. If it is not selected, the option will not appear in the users menu. This option is available on a per disk basis. HIDE This option allows disks to be set up for future use that are not available now. Selecting Hide will prevent the disk from appearing in the users menu. However the disk may still be accessed from the Administrator dialogue. DIAMOND - ADMINISTRATOR GUIDE Page 28
ADD/SAVE Once a network resource has been selected and the long name, description and group have been set, selecting Add will add the details to the database. If an existing item has been edited, selecting Save will update the details in the database. NOTE: No changes are made to the database unless Add or Save are selected after the changes have been made. NEW DATABASE Selecting this option creates a new database. After prompting whether you wish to continue, it will delete any databases that already exist. About Virtual CD: This option shows the version of Diamond that is running. NETWORK SETTINGS Figure 30.
