2 Of course, at the start of an incident, we will use conventional handwritten messaging. For this, we use the FT-8800 dual band VHF/UHF transceiver However, there may be a need for longer distance communications. We supply this with the Icom IC-718 HF Transceiver

3 Power up the station - Remove front and back covers, set aside - Verify HF transceiver is connected to a HF antenna - Verify AC power plug is plugged into a power source - Turn on 12vdc power supply - Turn on power master switch (back of unit)

4 Turn on the Transceiver - Turn on, tune the HF Transceiver ( details next slide )

5 -Press and hold 'Pwr button (2 sec) Turn on Transceiver [ Quick Press ] POWER button to turn on the transceiver - Adjust volume and squelch to taste. You have no way to know what changes may have been made and left on the IC-718 the last time it is used. Therefore it is important to check both the 'Quick Set' and 'Settings' Avoid errors, accept no interruptions when performing these checklists Assumes channel is pre programmed in memory. If not, see reference

7 'Quick Set' - RF Power [ Press & Hold ] 1sec, [ SET ] button to enter 'Quick Set' mode Use the [ Up ] & [ Dwn ] Buttons to navigate to 'RF power' Rotate main tuning knob to adjust power to anyone of 99 levels or H for the default, full power.

8 'Quick Set' - Mic gain [ Press & Hold ] 1sec, [ SET ] button to enter 'Quick Set' mode One uses the [ Up ] & [ Dwn ] Buttons to navigate to 'Mic gain' Rotate main tuning knob to adjust Mic gain to anyone of 99 levels or H. Default, is 50. Adjust to suit your voice

9 'Quick Set' - Vox gain [ Press & Hold ] 1sec, [ SET ] button to enter 'Quick Set' mode One uses the [ Up ] & [ Dwn ] Buttons to navigate to 'Vox gain' Rotate main tuning knob to adjust Vox gain to anyone of 99 levels or H. Default, is 50. Adjust to suit your voice

10 'Quick Set' - Vox delay [ Press & Hold ] 1sec, [ SET ] button to enter 'Quick Set' mode Use the [ Up ] & [ Dwn ] Buttons to navigate to 'Vox delay' Rotate main tuning knob to adjust Vox delay to any delay between 0 and 2 seconds in 0.1 increments

11 'Quick Set' - Anti Vox level [ Press & Hold ] 1sec, [ SET ] button to enter 'Quick Set' mode One uses the [ Up ] & [ Dwn ] Buttons to navigate to 'Anti Vox level' Rotate main tuning knob to adjust 'Anti Vox level' to any of 100 increments. Default is 50.

12 'Quick Set' - Dimmer [ Press & Hold ] 1sec, [ SET ] button to enter 'Quick Set' mode One uses the [ Up ] & [ Dwn ] Buttons to navigate to 'Dimmer' Rotate main tuning knob to adjust 'Dimmer' to one of Off, Low, High. The default is HI (High).

13 Quick Set & then, Initial Set mode There are two 'Set' modes in the IC-718 transceiver. Previous slides have dealt with the 'Quick Set' mode but we must also realize that the 'Initial Set' Mode may have been changed. The next slides offers a checklist for the 'Initial Set' mode.

16 'Initial Set' mode Beep p. 44 One uses the [ Up ] & [ Dwn ] Buttons to navigate to navigate to Beep Rotating the main tuning knob for Off or On Some operators do not like a 'beep' sounding each time they touch a button so it can be toggled On or Off Default is 'On'

21 'Initial Set' mode AM noise blanker p. 45 One uses the [ Up ] & [ Dwn ] Buttons to navigate to navigate to AM NB Rotating the main tuning knob to set Off or On. May improve reception in noisy conditions Default is 'On'

22 'Initial Set' mode Auto TS p. 45 One uses the [ Up ] & [ Dwn ] Buttons to navigate to navigate to Auto TS Rotating the main tuning knob to set Off or On. OFF = 2.5Khz / revolution of tuning dial On = 50.0 Khz / revolution Default is 'On'

26 Meter Selection Repeatedly pressing the display to step through: 'SET' button will cause the meter PO - RF power output ALC - Alc level SWR - SWR on the transmission line

27 Voice procedure hints Speak slowly and clearly Pause every 3 to 5 words when messaging If assigned, identify with your 'tactical' callsign, otherwise the stations formal callsign 'Check In' with net control every half hour Maintain the logbook and copies of formal messages

28 Six useful Frequencies The Ic-718 uses about 50 pre-programmed memory channels.
