3 Samplicity T600 IR Library Introduction This first Impulse Response (IR) library from Samplicity offers 89 presets from the famous TCE System 6000 hardware reverb in pristine 32 bit quality (24 bit versions are also included). All IRs are available in 48 Khz as well as 44.1 Khz versions, in the Wave file format. For Altiverb 5/6 users there a two folder structures, containing the Wave files with the required folder names and file names. About "True Stereo" This library contains True Stereo, or "stereo-to-stereo" impulse response sets, as well as "mono-tostereo" impulse files. The True Stereo sets use filenames that end with "L" and "R". Mono-to-stereo files end with "C" (for Center). This does not apply to the Altiverb files, where we follow the filenaming convention of AudioEase. If you are not certain how to load True Stereo IR sets, please check the documentation of your convolution plugin. True stereo IR sets consist of two stereo IR files, one with reverb information for sound from the left (L) input channel and one for sound from the right (R) input channel. Both files need to be fed with a centered mono signal from respectively the L and R channel. Most current convolution plugins have presets for True Stereo applications. If you use mono-to-stereo IRs it is a good practise to make the input signal mono or nearly mono. Otherwise off-center sounds will have an off-center reverb, which sounds rather odd. For optimal results use the True-Stereo IR sets Why 32 bit? This version of the Samplicity T600 library now also includes all the presets of the famous System 6000 hardware reverb in 32 bit, whereas version 1.0 only provided 24 bit files. The advantage of using 32 bit files is that you get a slightly better quality than when using 24 bit files, since we did all the processing and editing in 32 bit floating point format. Of course we have also created and included 24 bit versions of all presets in case your plugin cannot handle 32 bit files. For optimal results use the 32 bit IR versions Using 32 bit IR-files instead of 24 bit files does not make any difference in CPU-load, as all convolution plugins use 32 bit floating point as their internal processing format. Still, the Samplicity impulse responses are typically long and thus may require more CPU resources than other - free or commercial - IR's from the System Note: the Wave files use the 32 bit floating point format (required for the Waves IR-1 plugin). 4 File lengths and SNR By using long sine sweeps as input for the deconvolution process (= "recovering the impulse response from a device or real space"), we were able to produce signal-to-noise (SNR) levels between -110 db and -135 db (after correcting for subsonic noise and DC-offsets). We have faded out the tails of the impulse responses just before they reached their noise floor. In the editing phase we encountered a small number of problematic presets that relied too much on modulation effects. For these presets we have based our IRs on so called "spike" recordings, which results in lower SNRs (around -80 to -90 db after noise reduction). Reducing CPU load If you do not want to have your plugin spend too much CPU-power on processing the ends of the IR-tails, you can fade out after -70 db, using a drawn volume curve in your plugin. A preset like the Large Hall may have a 4.6 second file length, but the typical RT60 level is already reached around 2.3 seconds. So, without losing too much detail, you can significantly reduce the CPU load by fading out before the end of the IR file(s). Folders and files The DVD contains 13 folders that each contain all IRs in a specific format. Select the format you want to use and copy all the folders and their files to a harddisk of your Digital Audio Workstation. Upgrading from a previous T600 release? Important: if you are upgrading from a previous version, please note that we have changed folder and filenames in versions 1.2 and 1.3. This means that if you replace the T600 IRs currently on your system, your projects files (e.g. in Logic, Nuendo, Cubase or ProTools) may not automatically find and load the previously selected IR sets! So, do not upgrade right before an important project deadline! 5 Please note that the T600 library does not have mono-to-stereo IRs for all presets. We have used a numbering scheme that is different from the original System 6000 presets. A listing of all the presets can be found at the last pages of this document. About the special "position" programs There are 4 IR sets with additional variations: T Natural Hall T European Orchestra Hall T New Age Hall T Medium Room The additions are: A True Stereo version with less early reflections A True Stereo version with no early reflections (= tail only) 8 mono-to-stereo IR's for sources at specific stage positions The "position" IR files are meant for mono-to-stereo use and contain the appropriate early reflections for sources at a specific position in the stereo field. The filenames are based on a position in a 60 degree stereophonic "arc". Position 1, L30 is fully left. Position 2, L15 is a bit more to the center.... etc Position 8, R30 is fully right. These files are meant to be used this way: Determine where you want to pan a specific instrument or source in the stereo image Load the corresponding "position" IR into a separate bus as a single mono-to-stereo IR Make sure that the convolution plugin in this bus receives a MONO and centered input signal Apply the "position" IR fully wet to this bus Send an appropriate amount of signal into this bus for the instrument(s) that you want to give ambience to This will add the generic reverb tail together with the appropriate early reflections for this position. Please note that "mono-to-stereo" means that you have to provide a mono input signal, even if the source signal is not centered! Please contact peter@peterroos.com if this is not clear. Page 5 / 10

6 List of all reverb impulse response sets In the following table the True Stereo programs are indicated in the LR column. Mono-to-stereo programs are indicated in the C column. In the program folders you will find the same naming convention. The "predelay" column indicates the embedded leading silence in the IR up to the first early reflections. This delay corresponds exactly (= sample accurate) to the preset of the original digital reverb unit and it is an essential part of the reverb effect. Most plugins allow you to shorten this predelay, if you prefer that. Keep in mind, that the predelays are part of the design of the preset and represents the time it takes the original sound to hit the first reflective area. Removing pre-delays can make your mix sound muddier.
