4 Real-world reverb To elevate the state of the art in reverberation, it is necessary to capture the unique sound of a real acoustic space. That is where Sony engineers found the concert halls, churches and other venues to sample and re-create with the. The sampling itself was no mere mechanical process. Rather it was a full-fledged recording project that required a host of creative decisions familiar to audio professionals. The sampling system required loudspeakers to emit the test signal and microphones arrayed in the position corresponding to each mode offered by the. 7 More natural surround sound In addition to the stereo reverb modes, Sony has developed the to support reverb processing in multichannel sound production. The emergence of formats such as high-capacity DVD-Video have widely expanded the importance of multi-channel sound. The addresses these new opportunities by offering a multi-channel output, extending the processor s appeal across audio for video, television and film post-production applications. 8 Real-time DSP For years, the holy grail of Digital Signal Processing has been Real Impulse Response convoluted in real time. Unfortunately, the required processing power simply has not been available. That is why most digital reverberation systems have only simulated acoustic spaces: Artificial Impulse Response using approximation of early reflections and reverberation. Until now. A new Sony DSP developed expressly for the has 1,000 times the processing power of previous designs. Sony s DSP convolutes an amazing 256 k separate points. This enables far more comprehensive, far more convincing reverb. Not just the early reflections, but the complex reverberant tails are faithfully captured in Sony s Real Impulse Response. 9 96 khz Sampling for higher level of sound quality As the music and movie industries move from 48 khz to higher sampling rates, the can follow suit. Whisper-quiet signal-to-noise ratio As well as delivering astonishingly lifelike natural-sounding reverb effects, the also provides whisperquiet signal to noise performance. This has been achieved by taking multiple samples for each of the programs. Post processing of the sample data involves an averaging technique that allows the signal to noise to be dramatically improved; the net effect is a cleaner, more dynamic subjective sound quality. This approach also provides special benefits when recording the reverberant signature of noisy devices such as analog plates. The accurately captures the unique characteristic of these devices, with unwanted noise dramatically reduced to produce a reverb effect that is cleaner than the original plate. High quality A/D and D/A conversion The is equipped with highquality digital interfaces to ensure the integrity of digital audio signals. To extend its versatility further, the reverb processor has optional analog con - verters DABK-S701 (A/D Converter Board) and DABK-S702 (D/A Converter Board). These converter boards incorporate discrete-transistor amplification, critical for maintaining the integrity of analog signals. The result is uncompromising A/D D/A performance to match the superlative reverberation. 9
