1 JBOSS TOOLS INSTALLATION IN ECLIPSE February 2013 Level: By : Feri Djuandi Beginner Intermediate Expert Platform : Eclipse Juno, JBoss AS JBoss Tools are plugins developed for Eclipse (the Java IDE) that supports JBoss and related technology such as Hibernate, JBoss AS, CDI, Drools, jbpm, JSF, (X)HTML, Seam, Maven, JBoss Portal and more. When this article was written, there were some JBoss Tools versions available for various Eclipse packages: JBoss Tools 3.2 for Eclipse Helios JBoss Tools 3.3 for Eclipse Indigo And the latest version was JBoss Tools 4.0 for Eclipse Juno which we use in this article. The reason why we as programmers need JBoss Tools is of course to gain the benefits of the programming easiness and rapidness when building JBoss applications. You may not see those many benefits in this article instantly because here we only learn how to install the plugins, but as you continue reading the following articles then you may realize that these plugins are really helpful and we are thankful they are made for us. Obtaining Eclipse Juno As JBoss Tools 4.0 implies, the plugins require Eclipse Juno to work. Unless you want to use the previous Eclipse, then you need to select the earlier version of JBoss Tools. Eclipse packages can be freely downloaded from the following link: Follow the Eclipse IDE for Java EE Developers link, and then select the preferred Eclipse package afterward. Installing JBoss Tools The JBoss Tools is available for different types of Eclipse package. The plugins can be installed from: 1. Select the respective version of JBoss Tools

2 2. Please ensure the Eclipse Juno is open. Arrange the Eclipse window and your Internet browser window to be being open side by side like the picture below. 3. Click the Install button and hold the mouse button, then drag to the workspace of Eclipse. Release the mouse button. Drag and release here 4. As soon as you release the mouse, the JBoss Tools installation is starting to run. The installer displays the components to be installed in Eclipse. Continue by selecting the Next button

3 5. The installer shows the license agreements and asks you to accept in order to continue the installation. Press the Finish button to complete the installation

4 6. The installer is beginning to copy the files. It may take sometime until it is finished. 7. Restart Eclipse to complete the installation. Now JBoss Tools has been installed in your Eclipse

5 Associating Eclipse with the Installed JBoss AS After the JBoss Tools has been installed, it is time to associate Eclipse with the installed JBoss Server. Please ensure JBoss Application Server (JBoss AS) has been installed on the computer. 1. Open Eclipse and run the menu Windows Preferences. Locate the JBoss Tools node and expand the tree, then find JBoss Tools Runtime Detection. 2. Click the Add button and locate to the directory where JBoss is installed. In this example the JBoss installation is stored in directory C:\jboss-as Final. Click OK to Continue

6 3. If the you cannot see the server view, then activate the view by opening the menu Window Show View Servers. Click on the Servers icon to open the server view, or alternatively click on the Servers tab. The available JBoss AS should appear in the view

7 Starting JBoss To start the JBoss AS, select and right-click the server and then choose Start. Alternatively you can start the server using the Start button as shown in the following picture. ` To see the server activation log, please switch to the Console tab. We have done learning to prepare the JBoss environment in Eclipse. In the next lessons you will learn how to install the example JBoss applications and to create your own simple application
