Getting Started Thank you for purchasing a PhotoVu wireless digital picture frame. Get ready to experience digital photography like never before! We have created this Quick Start Guide to assist you through the initial setup process. The Quick Start Guide is designed as an overview only and more detailed help, manuals, and technical support are available online at and If you do not have an integrated trackpad on your PhotoVu model, most USB mouses will work with your frame. Then, all references to trackpad should be substituted with USB mouse in this document. Configuration and Usage Choices Basic Configuration and Usage If you plan to use the PhotoVu with a USB storage device only, you will be using the On- Screen Administration Program for basic configuration. Along with the integrated trackpad, the administration program is built into your PhotoVu and is very easy to use. A computer or network is not required to use this program. Advanced Configuration and Usage If you plan to use the PhotoVu on a wired or wireless network, you will be using the On- Screen Administration Program for advanced configuration. You need to have an understanding of basic networking technology and your specific network configuration. This includes: Logging on and administering the applicable devices on your network: Internet Gateway, Router/Switch, and/or Wireless Access Point. Enabling networking on your computer. Sharing a folder on your computer. Configuring your firewall, anti-virus, and protection software. Using your computer web browser to access the PhotoVu and Internet. If you feel uncomfortable with these terms or are not technical, it might be best to find an experienced computer person to help you with the initial installation. Since each home or office network is unique and can be configured in many different ways, PhotoVu does not provide technical support on setting up your internal network. Section 1: Unpack Your PhotoVu When you open the PhotoVu shipping carton(s), you will find the following items. 1. Factory Packaging Please save this in the event of a return or servicing. PhotoVu does not accept any units without the original packaging. 2. Your PhotoVu Customized with your picture frame moulding and matboard. 3. Installation Template Used for wall mounting, if appropriate. Please see the Wall Mounting Kit instructions if you have ordered this accessory

4. Quick Start Guide This document you are now reading. It will assist you in setting up your PhotoVu. 5. Support Policies A listing of all PhotoVu support policies and services. 6. Sales Invoice A summary of your order. 7. Ethernet Coupler Depending upon your PhotoVu model, this can be found in the rear recessed compartment or in a separate plastic bag in the shipping box. 8. 5 Section 3: PhotoVu Configuration Options Your PhotoVu includes two administration programs to assist you with the initial setup and ongoing configuration and management of your wireless digital picture frame. This Quick Start Guide focuses on the On-Screen Administration Program. The PhotoVu online help, provides details on using the Web Browser Administration program. On-Screen Configuration: This is the PhotoVu recommended option for your initial configuration. Using the on-screen program, you will configure the most commonly used features directly on the PhotoVu using the built-in menu system and trackpad. The trackpad mouse is located on right rear side of the PhotoVu. Web Browser Configuration: This option is for advanced users only and requires access and use of your computer and network. The full PhotoVu feature set is available using the built-in web browser administration program. Section 4: Basic On-Screen Configuration This section applies to customers using the PhotoVu with a USB storage device only. If you plan to use the PhotoVu on a wired or wireless network, please see Section 5: Advanced On- Screen Administration. At this point, the PhotoVu's power should be off. If you have a USB storage device, it should not be plugged into the PhotoVu. 1. Connect the power then wait for the PhotoVu to start. If the PhotoVu does not automatically start within 15 seconds, push the Power Button. Please wait for the background screen saver photos to appear. The display might turn off and on several times during start up. 2. Press the Power Button once to access the On-Screen Administration Program. Find the integrated trackpad mouse located on right rear side of the PhotoVu and use this to navigate the on-screen menus. 3. Under the Setup Menu, adjust your Date & Time, Photo Show Options, and Display Schedule. 4. Exit the On-Screen Administration Program. 5. Copy some photos (JPEG images) from a computer onto your USB storage device. Make sure you eject or safely remove your USB device from your computer! 6. Plug your USB storage device into one of the PhotoVu's USB ports (located in the rear recessed pocket) and wait a few moments. The PhotoVu will automatically play all of the images found on your USB device. 7. To play specific folders on your USB storage device, press the Power Button once to access the on-screen menus. Go to USB Folders under the Setup Menu. Select one or more folders to include in the Photo Show. Save your settings. 8. Exit the On-Screen Administration Program. The Photo Show will begin shortly. Most USB flash drives are compatible with the PhotoVu. Please note, only the USB hard drive sold on our web site is compatible and supported. All USB storage devices should be in the FAT32 format. If you reformat a USB storage device, your format preference should be FAT32! MAC OS X, NTFS, and EXT3/4 file systems are experimentally supported. At this point, please skip to Section 6: On-Screen Navigation

Section 5: Advanced On-Screen Configuration This section applies to customers using the PhotoVu on a wired or wireless network. If you plan to use the PhotoVu with a USB storage device only, please see Section 4: Basic On- Screen Administration. Make sure your network, wired or wireless, is configured and running. If not, please do this first to ensure proper configuration of the PhotoVu. For questions on your specific network configuration, please contact the manufacturer of your networking device(s). PhotoVu cannot provide technical support on non-photovu products or on general networking designs or issues. However, where appropriate, we may be able to outline certain settings that will optimize the performance of the PhotoVu on your network. For the initial configuration, you must turn off all firewalls, anti-virus, protection software, or other programs that monitor your internal network. In most cases, these programs are located on your computer. Many of these network monitoring or protection programs will automatically turn back on in a few minutes after you disable them. Please ensure these programs are completely off as you go through the Quick Start Guide. Once you have the PhotoVu configured correctly, please consult your protection software user manuals to setup a rule or permission to allow the PhotoVu ongoing communication with your computer and/or network. At this point, the PhotoVu's power should be off. If you have a USB storage device, it should not be plugged into the PhotoVu. 1. Plug the supplied USB wireless adapter into one of the PhotoVu's USB ports. Or, for a wired connection, use the supplied Ethernet coupler and connect the PhotoVu to your wireless access point or switch/router. The USB ports and Ethernet connections are located in the PhotoVu's rear recessed pocket. Make sure you do not use a crossover Ethernet cable! 2. Connect the power then wait for the PhotoVu to start. If the PhotoVu does not automatically start within 15 seconds, push the Power Button. Please wait for the background screen saver photos to appear. The display might turn off and on several times during start up. 3. Press the Power Button once to access the On-Screen Administration Program. Find the integrated trackpad mouse located on right rear side of the PhotoVu and use this to navigate the on-screen menus. 4. Under the Setup Menu, adjust your Date & Time, Photo Show Options, and Display Schedule. 5. Click on Network Settings in the Setup Menu. Modify your Wired or Wireless settings, depending upon your connection, using the menus and pop-up keyboard at the bottom of the screen. See Section 8: Networking and the PhotoVu for additional networking details. 6. You should now be configured on your network. In Section 7: Working With Your Mac or PC, you will configure the PhotoVu to work with your computer. Also, you can follow Section 4: Basic On-Screen Administration if you plan to use a USB storage device

7. If you are having trouble connecting to your network, see Section 9: Troubleshooting Your Network Connection. Section 6: On-Screen Navigation Basic features can be accessed using the integrated trackpad or the PhotoVu's Power Button. Try pressing it now. Continue to press the Power Button and you will see the highlight move. If you pause on a selection for 5 seconds, the highlighted action will be taken. If you do not Exit, the on-screen menus will automatically disappear after a few minutes of inactivity and the Photo Show will resume. If you prefer to work with a USB mouse, most will operate with the PhotoVu. You can use either USB port on the PhotoVu. Please note, moving the mouse after using Display Off can activate the LCD again. Section 7: Working with Your Mac or PC Once your PhotoVu is configured and on the network, enter the PhotoVu's IP address into your computer web browser. The IP address is located at the top of the On-Screen Administration Program main page. Now, login to the PhotoVu. At the password prompt, type in the default user of admin and default password of password. Both should be entered without quotes. This can be changed after you login. This Quick Start Guide is only designed to get you up and running on your network and for basic operation. At this point, your PhotoVu should be connected to your network and you should have access to the PhotoVu Web Administration Program. Since the PhotoVu supports a wide variety of operating systems and Internet photo sharing web sites, the documentation is continuously updated. Therefore, the next steps of the Quick Start Guide can be found online at: Please select 1) Getting Started, Quick Start in the online help. For most users, the last option will apply. The online Quick Start will take you through the process of setting up your computer to work with your PhotoVu. Getting Help Technical support and online documentation are available at A good place to start is in the PhotoVu Knowledge Base. You can also open a Support Ticket and a technical engineer will answer your question. Please note, you need to create an support username and password to use this system. Section 8: Networking and the PhotoVu If you plan to use your wired or wireless network with the PhotoVu, the following section will be helpful during initial setup and configuration. DHCP Server You must have a DHCP server available on your network to initially setup your PhotoVu. Preferably, this device should be connected to your broadband router (DSL modem, cable - 7 -

modem, wireless bridge, or satellite modem). The PhotoVu will use the DHCP server to retrieve its IP address on your network. Each device on your network personal computer, PDA, digital picture frame, etc. needs a unique number assigned to it so that it can communicate with other devices on the same network. These unique numbers are called IP addresses. There are two options in assigning IP addresses. You can manually set the IP address on each device or allow for this to happen automatically. The automatic option is called DHCP and is performed by a DHCP server. The good news is that most network devices wireless access point, broadband router, network switch, etc. have a DHCP server built into them. Typically, the DHCP server is found in your wireless access point or network switch and will already be turned on. If you have multiple DHCP s servers (for instance in a wireless access point and another one in your router or gateway), use the one in the device connected to your broadband Internet (WAN) connection. Make sure you only have one DHCP server enabled on your network. For specific information on how to configure this option, please see your manufacturer s documentation. Using an Ethernet Connection An Ethernet coupler is included with your PhotoVu and accepts a connection using a regular Ethernet cable. A crossover Ethernet cable is not used or required. Using the Ethernet cable and coupler, plug the PhotoVu into an open LAN port on your network switch. Make sure you are using a LAN port and not one marked as WAN or Internet. As the PhotoVu starts up, make sure the corresponding port number on your network switch lights up and blinks. If not, you will not be able to configure your PhotoVu. When you have the Ethernet cable connected, the PhotoVu will automatically use the wired connection as the primary connection. From the On-Screen Administration Program, select Setup Menu then Network Settings. Find Modify the Wired Network section. You will most likely have values in this section. When using DHCP, you can modify some values including your Gateway and DNS settings. A static IP address can be set as well. From the Network Settings page, click on Static within the Modify the Wired Network section, enter your values, then save the settings. These should become active in a few moments. Using a Wireless Connection Make sure you have the USB wireless adapter plugged into the PhotoVu's USB port. The Ethernet cable should be disconnected or the PhotoVu will use it as the default connection. Initially, place the PhotoVu close to your wireless access point during configuration. From the On-Screen Administration Program, select Setup Menu then Network Settings. Click on the Modify the Wireless Properties section. Scan for all access points. You should see yours listed. If not, either it is not configured correctly or you have the broadcast SSID Off (this needs to be On). Click to add your access point or type the name into the SSID field using the keyboard at the bottom of the screen. Enter your security type and fill out the necessary information. Save your settings. Your PhotoVu should restart. If not, go to the Main Menu and click on Restart. When using DHCP, you can modify some values including your Gateway and DNS settings. A static IP address can be set as well. From the Network Settings page, click on Static within the Modify the Wireless Network section, enter your values, then save the settings. These should become active in a few moments. A restart is not required

Section 9: Troubleshooting Your Network Connection Unfortunately, every customer installation is unique due to user defined options, networking equipment, operating system preferences, Internet Service Providers, and many environmental factors that can cause wireless interference and configuration issues. Below are some of the most common suggestions when trying to resolve wireless problems: USB Wireless Adapter : Ensure that this is plugged into a USB port on the PhotoVu. Try a different port if in doubt. Scanning : Do you see your access point in this list? Do you see any access points at all? Are you broadcasting your SSID? The PhotoVu cannot see your wireless network if you have broadcasting off. Signal Strength : Values between -35 and -60dBm should give you good results (lower negative numbers are better). Once you are down in the -60 to -90dBm range, your wireless connection can become intermittent and unresponsive at times. IP Address : Verify you have an IP address on your PhotoVu. Also make sure it is valid on your network. Based upon your configuration, it is possible to connect to a different network (neighbors, free access point, etc.). SSID : Is there a value in the SSID? Does it match the one on your wireless access point? Remember, a SSID is both case and space sensitive. Mode : Are you in Managed mode? If not, you will not be able to connect to your wireless network. Ad-hoc is an advanced mode that should only be used by highly technical customers. Security : Does the PhotoVu show you are using security? Does this match your wireless access point's settings? Access Point Speed : Make sure your access point supports g only or mixed mode (b/g/n). Mixed mode does not apply if your network and all devices only run g. Adapter Reset : If none of the options above seem to work, try unplugging the USB Wireless Adapter and shutting down the PhotoVu. Wait a few minutes and start the PhotoVu again. Immediately plug back in the USB wireless adapter as the PhotoVu starts up. By removing all power for a short period of time, the USB wireless adapter will be fully reset. If you are still having troubles, try to find your potential solution by searching the PhotoVu Knowledge Base at If you can still not find an answer, please register and submit a support ticket. On your support ticket, be as detailed as possible about your installation, computer and network configuration, and problem you are experiencing. We are unable to provide first line support over the phone. Only after you have contacted PhotoVu through the support ticketing process are we able to initiate limited phone support, on a caseby-case basis, as deemed necessary by PhotoVu Technical Support. Section 10: Installation Very Important Notice: You must use the PhotoVu mounting hardware supplied by PhotoVu. Do not use any other screws other than the ones that were supplied with your PhotoVu unit. Do not screw, - 9 -

mount, attach, protrude, or hook into, any holes in the back of the PhotoVu other than which are specifically designated and documented within this PhotoVu Digital Picture Frame Quick Start Guide or on the PhotoVu Installation Instructions found on the Mounting Template. The PhotoVu contains sensitive electronic circuitry as well as high voltage inside its enclosure. Using any screws other than what have been provided by PhotoVu, or mounting it in any other manner other than what is expressly documented within this PhotoVu Digital Picture Frame Quick Start Guide or on the PhotoVu Installation Instructions found on the Mounting Template, will void your warranty, will damage your unit, and can also lead to serious injury, including death. Please follow the directions on the PhotoVu Installation Template included in your packaging. PhotoVu strongly recommends hiring licensed contractors for mounting and electrical installation. The Installation Template is meant to be used as a guide only -- make sure to use a level and tape measure to double check that the two mounting points are truly level and dimensionally correct. Your PhotoVu has been designed to be surface mounted only. Never recess the unit into a wall. Never operate your PhotoVu or install it inside another enclosure, cabinet, alcove, or armoire. Hanging the unit on the outside of a wall with plenty of free and open air space above and below the unit will allow for adequate ventilation through the unit, maintaining a safe operating temperature. Failure to wall mount the PhotoVu properly to ensure adequate ventilation could cause the unit to overheat, resulting in fire and or other serious injury, including death. Failure to properly secure your PhotoVu as instructed in this document could result in the PhotoVu falling off the wall, resulting in serious injury or death. Please only mount the PhotoVu as recommended by PhotoVu. DO NOT use picture framing wire or hooks. Additionally, if you are running an external power cord to the PhotoVu on the wall instead of using the recommended method of hiring a licensed contractor to install the optional PhotoVu Wall Mounting Kit behind the PhotoVu, please make sure the cord is secure and can not be grabbed or snagged by young children or pets. Failure to properly secure the power cord can result in the unit being pulled off the wall, resulting in serious injury, including death. A: D-Ring Installation For most older PhotoVu models, the standard and recommended wall mounting method is accomplished using the two supplied and attached D-Ring mounting hardware installed on the PhotoVu. These two rings can be easily looped over two secure extruding screws on the wall, placed 16 inches apart. Please make sure to use screws sufficient to hold 50lbs and that have a head big enough on the end to prevent the D-Rings from sliding off. If it s not possible to attach each of the two screws into a wall stud, make sure to use appropriate wall anchors sufficient to hold 50lbs. Using the D-Ring hooks will provide the closest fit against the wall, while allowing for structurally secure mounting and adequate airflow. B: Wall Mounting Kit For PhotoVu models PV2270 and above, the standard and recommended wall mounting method is the custom designed PhotoVu Wall Mounting Kit. This item is purchased separately and is available in the PhotoVu Store under Accessories. Please refer to the included mounting template diagram, the wall mounting kit instructions, and the cardboard template

included in the PhotoVu shipping box(s). These documents are also available under the Support, File Downloads section of our web site. C: VESA Wall Installation Your PhotoVu can accept a standard 100mm VESA mounting bracket. These brackets are available from many third party suppliers and PhotoVu does not recommend any particular product. PLEASE CONTACT PHOTOVU FIRST FOR SCREW LENGTH. Using screws that are too long can permanently damage the PhotoVu. D: Desktop VESA Stand PhotoVu provides a Desktop VESA Stand for desktop installations. Separate screws are not needed with our stand since they are integrated into the mounting bracket. If you plan to use a different VESA stand, PLEASE CONTACT PHOTOVU FIRST FOR SCREW LENGTH. Using screws that are too long can permanently damage the PhotoVu. Section 11: Updating Your Software (Optional) If you have purchased a PhotoVu New Features Software Update Plan, you should verify that your network settings are correctly configured by communicating with our software update server. For more information on software plans and support policies, please see the PhotoVu web site, Updating is as easy as using the Software Update option on the On-Screen Administration Program or by clicking on Advanced Settings, Software in the PhotoVu Web Browser Administration program. Detailed information on updating your software and troubleshooting is available on the PhotoVu support web site. Search on "software update" in the Knowledge Base. IMPORTANT INFORMATION PLEASE READ CAREFULLY Service The PhotoVu enclosure is factory sealed, riveted and welded together -- there are no user serviceable parts and it is not possible to open the unit without destroying it. Additionally, your custom mat has been glued down at the factory with a special high temperature resistant adhesive and is not user replaceable. Attempts to open the unit or replace the mat is expressly prohibited by the Terms and Conditions agreed to when the unit was first purchased. Any attempt to open the unit or replace the mat will void the warranty and make your digital picture frame unusable. If your unit needs service or mat replacement, please contact us directly for RMA instructions. It s a very simple process and PhotoVu can replace your mat to any new color of your choice at our factory. Only your outside custom frame is field/customer replaceable provided the rabbet depths are compatible with the original mounting brackets and the frame does not cover the venting holes. Simply unscrew the frame from the brackets and replace. You will probably also need to adjust the enclosure-to-frame mounting brackets to accommodate your different frame rabbet depth, unless it s exactly the same

Installation: DO NOT USE OTHER MOUNTING HARDWARE Please refer to Step 10: Installation for all options available. You must only use the PhotoVu mounting hardware supplied by PhotoVu. Do not use any other screws other than which were supplied with your PhotoVu unit. Do not screw, mount, attach, protrude, or hook into, any holes in the back of the PhotoVu other than those which are specifically designated and documented within this PhotoVu Digital Picture Frame Quick Start Guide or on the PhotoVu Installation Instructions found on the Mounting Template. The PhotoVu contains sensitive electronic circuitry as well as high voltage inside its enclosure. Using any screws other than what have been provided by PhotoVu, or mounting it any other manner other than what is expressly documented within this PhotoVu Digital Picture Frame Quick Start Guide or on the PhotoVu Installation Instructions found on the Mounting Template, will void your warranty, will damage your unit, and can also lead to serious injury, including death
