3 Installing the GigaStor Upgradeable 2U Chapter 1: Installation Unpacking and inspecting the parts Your probe includes a number of components. Take a moment after unpacking the kit to locate all of the parts. One rack-mountable probe system with a Gen2 card to capture traffic and an Ethernet network interface for management. One TAP kit for each link (two ports equal one link). Each TAP kit includes one ntap, appropriate SFP media for your topology links, and the cables to connect the TAP to your probe. The SFP media is available as copper (TX) or optical (LX or SX). RJ-45 Ethernet cable for the management interface in your probe to connect to your switch. 64-bit Windows 7 restore DVD specific for your probe. Documentation and warranty information. Keep this information in a safe, accessible location. Installing the drives in your GigaStor Follow these instructions to install the drives correctly before starting the probe. Failure to install the drives in the proper location will result in poor read/write performance until the RAID array volume is rebuilt. Stickers on each drive identify which slot it should be installed in. The drive labeled A1 must be installed in the upper left slot of the GigaStor. 1. Make sure that the GigaStor is turned off. 2. Locate the drives that comprise the array. The drives are labeled to show you where they should be installed in the drive cage. (Image may not exactly match your product.) Installation 1

4 Figure 1: GigaStor 5U front 3. To install a drive, slide the drive in until it clicks firmly in place. Repeat until all of the drives are firmly installed as labeled. How to handle hard drives properly Be especially careful when handling and installing the hard drives. Proper handling is paramount to the longevity of the unit. The internal mechanism of the hard drive can be seriously damaged if the hard drive is subjected to forces outside its environmental specifications. Caution! When transporting the hard drive, always use the original packaging in which the hard drive was delivered to you, and avoid exposing the hard drive to extreme changes in temperature to minimize the risk of condensation. Each drive for the GigaStor is packed in shock-resistant boxes. Never drop the unit. Handle it with care. 2 GigaStor Upgradeable 2U (pub. 17.Sept.13)

5 Never place the hard drive in the vicinity of equipment giving off strong magnetic fields, such as CRT monitors, televisions, or loudspeakers. Always use an anti-static mat and wrist strap when handling the hard drive. Hold the hard drive by the base and never touch the components on the circuit board assembly. If the temperature difference between the storage location and installation location exceeds 50 F/10 C, for temperature acclimation purposes, leave the hard drive in the new location over night (or at least two hours) before turning it on. Setting the probe s IP address It is unlikely that the probe s default address will be the one you want to keep for it. Configuring the probe s IP address allows you to put the probe on your network and to connect to it using an Observer analyzer or Windows Remote Desktop, both of which can be very useful since most probes are in distant or physically secure locations. At this point you have physically installed the hardware and connected all the cables. Now, you must turn on the probe and configure the software. After this is complete all of your interaction with the probe can now be done remotely by connecting to the probe using an Observer analyzer or Windows Remote Desktop depending on what you want to accomplish. 1. Connect a monitor, keyboard, and mouse to the probe and ensure the probe is plugged into a power outlet. These are only needed temporarily to set the IP address. You can disconnect them when you are finished. Alternatively, you can use Windows Remote Desktop to connect to the probe to make these changes. The default IP address is Turn on the system. For some probes, such as the, you may need to ensure the power switch is in the on position on the back of the probe. Then on the front of the probe, press the power button until the system starts to turn on. 3. Log in to the Windows operating system using the Administrator account. The default Administrator password is admin. After logging in, you may change this. See the Windows documentation, if necessary. 4. Click Start >Control Panel > Network and Internet Connections > Network Connections. Choose Local Area Connection and right-click and choose Properties. 5. Select Internet Protocol ( Figure 2: Default TCP/IP settings 6. Set the IP address, subnet mask, gateway, and DNS server for your environment and click OK. Click OK again to close the Local Area Connection Properties dialog. Close the Network Connections window. 7. Right-click the Probe Service Configuration Applet in the system tray and choose Open Probe Configuration. Setting the probe s IP address 3

By default the probe s name is a random mix of letters and numbers. Change the name of the probe to something meaningful to you. The name might be the physical location of the probe. Click Apply to save your changes and close the window. By default the GigaStor runs the Expert Probe as a Windows service and starts automatically at system startup. This prevents you from using the Observer analyzer on the GigaStor. You must connect to the GigaStor using Observer on a different system. After completing this task: Now that the probe s name is configured, there are several other settings you will need to configure before you connect the probe to an Observer analyzer. All probes share some common settings. There are also settings unique to the type of probe you are using. All common and unique settings are described in Configuring the probe s adapter speed, ToS/QoS precedence, and statistics sampling. Configuring the Lights out Management port for your GigaStor Your probe comes with an on-board LOM port that provides you a dedicated management channel for device maintenance. It allows you to monitor and manage your probe by remote control regardless of whether the probe is powered on. If you want to use the Lights out Management features, you must set the IP address for the LOM port in the probe s BIOS. 1. Ensure the Lights out Management port is connected to your network using a straight-through Ethernet cable. A crossover cable will not work. 4 GigaStor Upgradeable 2U (pub. 17.Sept.13)

7 2. When starting your probe, press Delete during POST to enter the BIOS setup. If you are using a GigaStor, wait for the RAID to initialize, which may take a moment. 3. In the BIOS, choose Server > IPMI Configuration. Change the IP address for LAN 3 to a static address that is a valid and usable address on your network. 4. Press F10 to save your changes and to exit the BIOS setup. Restart your probe. The LOM port is now available on the IP address you chose. The LOM card comes with its own processor that is separate from the probe. Because of this, if the LOM card s web interface does not come up after restarting the system, shut down the probe and remove the power, then wait at least 10 seconds before starting the system. This resets the LOM card and makes it visible on your network. Only the head unit needs to be shut down, any attached drive units may stay running. The default user name and password for the LOM card's web interface is either ADMIN/ADMIN. To change the default password, open a web browser to and click Configuration > Users > Edit user. 8 Chapter 2: Technical Specifications technical specifications The probe includes the Gen2 capture card and Expert Probe software. This allows for simultaneous connections by multiple users, and provides real-time expert processing at the probe. It also includes a number of security and reliability features. Lockable security panel that prevents access to the media drives and system controls. Two keys are provided. Contact Network Instruments for additional keys, which are available for a small charge. Front panel LED Temperature alarms that warn you when temperatures inside the case are reaching levels that may damage the probe hardware. Do not remove the top panel from the probe. The probe was designed to cool most efficiently with the top panel in place. Opening the probe will void your warranty! Front panel LED Fan Failure alarms that warn you when the front intake fan has failed. There is BIOScontrolled system monitoring that automatically slow down the CPU clocking in response to critical temperatures senses on the motherboard. D Primary Operating System Drive Removable hard drive with the operating system. E Power, OS, and drive lights The Power light is on whenever the GigaStor unit is on. The operating system light blinks whenever there is activity on the OS drive. The individual RAID drive lights blink whenever there is activity on that specific drive. F Redundant Operating System Drive An optional redundant operating system drive that becomes active should the primary drive (D) fail. G RAID drive locations The RAID is built at the factory, and the drives are removed before being shipped to you. The locations indicate where each drive should be installed. Installing a drive in a location other than its preassigned slot may affect initial performance of your GigaStor while the RAID rebuilds itself.
