11 Teaching notes This game was inspired after seeing the way some Functional Maths questions at Levels 1 and 2 were presented. The game can be used as a fun way of checking what learning has taken place, or how comfortable the students are with money, fractions and percentages. Create your game cards: They need to be printed either in colour, or on different coloured paper, as there are different types of cards. Once printed, they should be laminated and cut out. Note: It may be useful before laminating to put a second sheet of paper behind the cards, to stop the colour being seen before the card is turned over. Playing the game The game is very simple to play: 1. Split the students into groups of 3, 4 or 5. You can make the groups larger or smaller according to how difficult you want the activity to be. 2. Each member of the group should pick: a. 1 Budget Card (Purple) - tells them how much money they have to start with. b. 2 Purchase Cards (Pale Blue) - tells them what goods they must buy. c. 1 memory card (Orange) tells them what memory they must buy. 3. The rest of the cards should be shuffled and placed in the middle. These are the Cards Red, cards gold, Cards Green, Cards Blue. 4. Members should then work out how much their goods and memory cost and if they have enough money in their budget. If they do not have enough money, they can change one or both of their goods cards only, until they do have enough to cover the cost. 5. Once their budget covers what they are buying, each member of the group should take it in turns to pick from the large pile in the middle. They must then re-calculate the cost of their goods and / or the amount of money they have left. The game continues in this way until all the cards in the middle are used up. Variations: This game is very versatile. There are 3 levels of the game E3, L1 and L2 and you can change the conditions and difficulty to suit yourself and your students. Once you have made the cards, the game lends itself well to lots of different subjects and different levels. Here are a few suggestions for use in maths: Adapt the amount of different types of game cards according to how hard you want the game to be. For example you could have a larger number of cards if you wanted it to be a little easier, or you could remove the cards and only include and cards, if you want it to be more difficult. Calculators - Use the game to practise mental techniques by varying whether or not students can use a calculator. Use it for a plenary, to check how much learning has taken place or as a practise for a forthcoming exam Page 11 of 11
