2 For Windows7 Or Later If you are using Windows7 or later operating system you will be using a USB to serial adapter. The DM1 Program application and the logging feature DM1 Explorer work well with the brand FTDI USB to serial adapter. These can be bought locally where computers and accessories are sold. Available under several brands but having this attribute: 1. You will be glad that you did. 2

3 PROGRAMMING THE DM-1 USING YOUR COMPUTER HARDWARE OVERVIEW HARDWARE The DM-1 TIMER communicates through a serial port on your computer. The picture below demonstrates the order each component is connected. Most newer computers do not have a D-Sub 9 pin serial jack. The job of serial communication has been given to the Universal Serial Bus or USB ports. The DRILLClock Programming Adapter can connect directly to a D-Sub 9 pin serial port or to a USB to serial adapter which is connected to an available USB port on the computer. 4 PROGRAMMING THE DM-1 USING YOUR COMPUTER DM-1 PROGRAMMING ADAPTER CABLE THE PROGRAMMING ADAPTER CABLE The Programming adapter cable connects the DM1 Timer to a DB-9pin serial connector. If your computer has a DB-9pin serial port you should use it as first choice. If you will be using a USB port on your computer you will connect the Programming adapter cable to the FTDI USB to Serial adapter. Many computers will no longer have a DB-9pin port making using the USB adapter mandatory. 5 PROGRAMMING THE DM-1 USING YOUR COMPUTER SETTING UP THE USB COMPORT FOR THE DM1 PROGRAM If you are using the FTDI USB to Serial adapter you must install the driver program for the adapter before you can open the Program application. Setting Up The Comport (For 9pin serial port or USB port) Plug the USB to Serial adapter into an available USB port on your computer. Windows will look for a driver for the USB to serial adapter. Windows will ask if you have a disk, insert the disk provided. Windows will search and install the driver and tell you USB adapter is installed ready to use. Open the DM1 Program executable by double clicking on it opening to the splash screen. Click the SELECT PORT button on the Splash screen. On the next menu, click on the word PORT. Then click on View available ports. On the next menu, click on the side arrow in the text box. The text box will have your adapter listed, click on the text and then click OK. Close the next menu. The splash screen will reopen, click on OPEN PROGRAMMER. The next time you will not need to select the port, you will go straight to OPEN PROGRAMMER If all is right you will see the LED on the DM-1 light once, go off and then do it again. Note: If you are using the USB adapter you must connect the adapter before the DM1 Program application will open. 5

6 PROGRAMMING THE DM-1 USING YOUR COMPUTER TIPS FOR PROGRAMMING Setup a schedule by changing the numbers in the segment boxes using your mouse or you can click on the HELP button to see the Hot Key assignments for your keyboard. Your schedules are saved right on the panel in 6 scratchpad memories. You can change any part of your schedule and resave it or you can change a schedule on the panel, reload the schedule to the DM1 and not save the change you made. Just remember that before you leave the application if you don t save it, it won t be there next time! The DM1 Program application is simple and reliable with the DM1. It is intended to be a short study and be straight to the point. You will see tool tips displayed as you move your mouse curser over the different buttons and windows. They will go a long way in explaining and guiding you through the program. Note: A new addition is the DM1 Explorer that will let you check the Schedule after loading the DM1. This is a Beta version of a race logging application for the Start Gun Timer. To use the viewer: from the splash screen click on DM1 Explorer Time Capture. You can step through your segments and see what is set for each. 6

7 PROGRAMMING THE DM-1 USING YOUR COMPUTER DM-1 TIMER RELOAD PROCEDURE Connect the DM1 to your computer using the Program Adapter cable. If using a USB port, connect the adapter cable to the USB adapter and the USB adapter to an available USB port on your computer. LOAD SCHEDULE TO THE DM1 MAKE THE DM-1 TIMER RELOAD READY (with the DM1 connected to your computer) 1. While you press the DM-1 RELOAD button, momentarily press SAVE Then Release RELOAD. see Fig. 1 below. The DM-1 LED will remain lighted and the Status Window will say CONNECTED 2. On the computer panel you will begin the RELOAD by clicking the EXPORT/LOAD button located in the top right section of the GUI panel shown in Fig. 2 below. 3. The RELOAD is finished in a couple of seconds indicated by the word Finished in the Status window on the computer screen. The DM-1 LED will blink and turn OFF and the Status Window will say GOOD LOAD. GOOD LOAD CONNECTED EXPORT/LOAD Fig. 2 7

8 A CHECK LIST FOR POSSIBLE PROBLEMS WHAT TO CHECK FOR IF YOU HAVE TROUBLE PROGRAMMING NOTE 1: If the program crashes when you click OPEN PROGRAMMER, check to make sure you have the USB to Serial adapter plugged into your computer. NOTE 2: When you make the DM-1 RELOAD READY for loading a schedule the status window will say CONNECTED. NOTE 3: If you are able to open the DM1 PROGRAM main page as shown to the right, then you have a serial port ready for the DM-1 to use. This same port will reopen for the DM1 Explorer Time Capture application. You can use DM1 Explorer to view the segment schedule on the DM1 after you load it. You will see some extra characters being displayed but it is a good way to see what you have programmed on the DM1 without having the display and stand in your office. NOTE 4: The DM-1 LED should always switch off after a reload operation. The status window will also report Good Load for a successful operation. As soon as that message appears you can unplug the DM1 and close the program. 8

9 OPERATING THE DM-1 SEGMENT TIMER GETTING SET UP FOR THE PRACTICE FIELD SETTING UP THE DM-1 TIMER SYSTEM 1. Place the DSP-1 LED display on the tripod stand. 2. Connect the XLR4 pin connector. 3. Connect the DM-1 TIMER controller to the Stand Connection Box. 4. The Horn Phone Plug can be left unplugged if you are not needing the high level audio output. 5. Plug the battery pack into the Stand Connection Box and secure the plug locking ring. 6. Push the POWER button on the Stand Connection Box. 6. The display will light and after a short setup routine show segment number one s (1) time. IMPORTANT! It is the operators responsibility to make sure that the battery pack cable and power plug are restrained from being accidentally disconnected. Use the same methods to restrain the DM-1 TIMER hand control cable. A USE ONE OR MORE OF THESE METHODS TO RESTRAIN CABLES FROM DISSCONNECTION A. Looping around the stand cross arm or leg B. Velcro straps to the cross arm or leg C. Athletic tape to the cross arm or leg 9

10 OPERATING THE DM-1 SEGMENT TIMER SETUP THE DM1 START GUN TIMER RACE LOGGER SETTING UP THE DUAL REACTION TIMER 1. Begin by setting up the DSP display, tripod, power etc. 2. Connect the Padswitch to the connection box and place at the Start point. 3. Connect the RF Receiver or a wired Beam Breaker receiver to the connection box. 4. Setup the Beam Breaker at the finish capture point. CONNECT TO YOUR COMPUTER 1. Connect the DM1 Timer to the Y adapter cable and to the stand connection box DM1 connector. 2. Connect the Y cable DB9 connector to your serial computer port, or through the USB to Serial adapter. 3. Press the Power button on the stand connection box. 4. Next press the DM1 SET button and then the SEGMENT + button to switch to START GUN mode. 5. Start the application on your computer and click on the DM1 Explorer button. NOTE: The connection to the computer can be easily extended to over a hundred feet if needed. Connection to the Padswitch can be extended to over 200 feet using common XLR microphone cables. The application lets you save a list of athletes names to a text file at: For Windows XP System C:\Program Files\DM1 Program\Name list.txt For Windows 7 System C:\Program Files (x86)\dm1 Program\Name list.txt The application creates a time log of the drill to a text file at: For Windows XP System C:\Program Files\DM1 Program\Time log.txt For Windows 7 System C:\Program Files (x86)\dm1 Program\Time log.txt 10

11 CONNECTING THE LOGGER LOGGING THE START GUN TIME CAPTURES In normal operation the DM1 will connect directly to the stand connection box. To use the computer to log race times use the Y cable between the DM1 and the stand connection box. The DB9 connector will connect to an extension cable to your computer directly or through the USB adapter. D- Your laptop computer can be placed a distance from the action for safety. Male to Female 9pin serial cables are available at your local stores. Extend up to 100FT and further. CONNECT TO YOUR COMPUTER B- This leg of the Y cable would connect to the stand connection box.
