3 1 Introduction Wireless communication is the latest trend in technology and the market of the future. Bluetooth wireless technology for data transfer over short-range radio signals is standardized and has become an established data transfer technique. With Bluetooth wireless technology, mobile and stationary equipment can be connected in a free-field range of up to 100 meters in Piconet networks (up to four balances or scales), making cable connections and lineof-sight infrared connections unnecessary. Bluetooth wireless technology offers a comprehensive solution for simple and fast communication between PCs and peripheral devices and is increasingly found in laboratories and production environments. Especially in areas where mobile weighing capabilities are needed, or where conditions at the place of installation make conventional cable installation impossible (e.g., in contaminated environments or under clean-room conditions), Bluetooth wireless technology is not only a practical alternative but a genuine problem solver. The freedom from RS-232 and RS-485 cabling with their concomitant costs, level converters and susceptibility to interference is a major advantage. Data security is a high priority in Bluetooth technology, and is implemented by mechanisms such as frequency hopping, in which the signal changes frequency at a rate of 1600 "hops" per second based on a frequency-hopping spread-spectrum (FHSS) system, as well as other optional data encryption techniques. Thus Bluetooth wireless technology offers the reliability that is essential in sensitive fields, such as pharmaceutical research and production. The interposed Bluetooth interface simply replaces the connecting cable. Any computer software that communicates with weighing equipment over COM interfaces and cables can use the Bluetooth radio link instead. 3

4 2 Standard External Bluetooth Wireless RS-232 and USB Interfaces The new Bluetooth interface modules YBT01 (connected to the RS-232C port on Sartorius equipment) and YBT02 (on the USB port of a desktop or laptop computer) can be used to transfer all data and commands that can be transmitted over normal cable connections on serial COM data interfaces. Furthermore, the stainless steel housing of the YBT01 communications module has IP65 protection and meets the highest standards for cleanability. The communications module can be installed anywhere, for optimum range. YBT01 YBT02 The model YBT01 Bluetooth RS-232 adapter is designed for connection to the following Sartorius premium equipment series: : GENIUS ME models, including ME5/SE2 : Master pro LA models : Factory models (Fast Factory modification required) : Digital IS platforms (Fast Factory modification required) : isi indicators (Fast Factory modification required) : Combics indicators and scales (only with DB25 interface) : Expert LE models : MA100 and MA50 electronic moisture analyzers The following software programs can be operated in conjunction with these modules: : Sartorius Sarto Connect (only with Fast Factory version: "Sarto Connect without dongle") : Sartorius WinScale : Sartorius GMP Connect : Sartorius SPEXXIS The model YBT01 Bluetooth RS-232 adapter is configured at the factory. The following parameters are configured in the RS-232 data interface on the YBT01: : Transmission speed: 9600 bit/s : Parity: odd : 1 stop bit : 7 data bits (setting for SBI communication) 4

5 The factory configuration of the interface on the YBT01 Bluetooth RS-232 adapter does not enable communication over the XBPI protocol. XBPI capability requires 8 data bits, and must be requested separately. To use the YBT01 adapter and the weighing instrument in XBPI mode, or in SBI mode with interface settings other than those configured at the factory, the desired settings must be configured in the interface on the YBT01 module. The serial interface on the YBT01 adapter can be configured at the factory, by indicating Fast Factory Order No. VF3173 (prices available on request) and the required parameters, or on site by a Sartorius service technician. 3 Combics Built-in Bluetooth Wireless RS-232 and USB Interfaces The YDO01C-BT version is designed for installation on the UniCOM interface inside Combics indicators and Combics scales (models CIS..., CW*S... only), with a cable gland connection on the rear panel. Order Option B2 to have the YDO01C-BT installed and tested in Combics equipment at the factory. The YDO01C-BT communicates with the YBT02 module on the computer. This illustration shows the YDO01C-BT interface, also available under Option B2, factory-installed in a Combics indicator (CIS, CW*S ), with cable gland for installation in the indicator housing and connected antenna. The required equipment labels (shown here) are also included. YDO01C-BT / Option B2 YBT02 With the new Bluetooth interface module YDO01C-BT (accessory) or Option B2 (factory-installed) in the indicator and the YBT02 module connected to the USB port of a desktop or laptop computer, it is possible to transmit all data and commands that can be communicated over conventional cable connections on serial COM data interfaces. 5

Outside the EU: Switzerland. Use of this product is not licensed in any countries not listed here. Important Note: No approval has been issued for use of the product in Italy. 7 6 Equipment Supplied YBT01: The external Bluetooth interface comes with antenna, angle plug, mounting bracket and cable for connection to the DB25 printer port on the balance/scale. Installation and operating instructions are also included. YBT02: The USB adapter is configured at the factory for immediate connection to the computer's USB port. Power is supplied by the computer. Software and operating instructions are also included on CD. Any commercially available USB extension cable can be used for remote connection of the adapter to the USB port. YDO01C-BT: The built-in Bluetooth interface comes with antenna, angle plug and PC card for installation on the built-in UniCOM interface in a Combics indicator. The antenna is connected through a cable gland installed on the housing. Installation and operating instructions are also included. Option B2: The built-in Bluetooth interface is installed at the factory in a Combics indicator, with antenna and angle plug connected to a cable gland on the indicator housing. The module is function-tested at the factory.
