Proposal to Extend the P1394b S800-S m Glass Optical Fiber (GOF) Link Specifications, Based on 850nm Lasers & 50MMF, to Include S100, S200 & S400 Links (2) P1394B Portland Meeting August 18-19, 1998 Del Hanson Tomoki Saito NEC 1
Outline 1. Overview of proposal 2. Some issues to be clarified and resolved (1) Low speed operation of Gb Ethernet transceiver (2) Interoperability - Amendment of a requirement for B-PHY - Positive impact of the new requirement B-PHY silicon, GOF, POF 2
1. Overview of proposal 2. Some issues to be clarified and resolved (1) Low speed operation of Gb Ethernet transceiver (2) Interoperability - Amendment of a requirement for B-PHY - Positive impact of the new requirement B-PHY silicon, GOF, POF 3
Overview of proposal (1) PMDs of current P1394b S100 S200 S400 S800 S1600 S3200 UTP5 Long POF / HPCF GOF TBD Short pin STP TBD 4
Overview of proposal (2) Why do we need a low speed GOF PMD? 1) Users need a future proof infrastructure now. 2) Users should have a variety of selection of PMDs for a long haul link. 3) 1394B allows implementation of S100-S400 long haul B-PHY silicon. It is desirable to apply an S800-S1600 GOF transceiver to the S100-S400 range. 5
Overview of proposal (3) S100-S400 GOF PMD Specification The S800-S1600 optical interface specifications should be extended to the range of S100-S nm Laser Diode 100m GI50-MMF link Same power budget, rise/fall times and connector as that for S800-S1600 link See the Section 7 "Optical specifications" of P1394b Draft
Overview of proposal (4) Amendment of a requirement for B-PHY The beta port of B-PHY for a long haul link should be independent on PMDs and fully scalable on operation speeds. This implies the port properties as follows. A P1394b port shall be capable of operating at any speed range from S100 upwards, if any kind of long haul PMD is attached to a B-PHY. 7
1. Overview of proposal 2. Some issues to be clarified and resolved (1) Low speed operation of Gb Ethernet transceiver (2) Interoperability - Amendment of a requirement for B-PHY - Positive impact of the new requirement B-PHY silicon, GOF, POF 8

1. Overview of proposal 2. Some issues to be clarified and resolved (1) Low speed operation of Gb Ethernet transceiver (2) Interoperability - Amendment of a requirement for B-PHY - Positive impact of the new requirement B-PHY silicon, GOF, POF 14
Interoperability (1) Amendment of a requirement for B-PHY The proposed amendment of the requirement is essential to keep the interoperability between the S800-S1600 range and the S100-S400 range with a long haul PMD. The long haul port of the B-PHY is required to operate from S100 upwards with beta mode. 15
Interoperability (2) Impact of a new requirement to the B-PHY A new requirement affects only on the category (b). The B-PHY only with short haul ports (a) is not affected. Category a b c Max. Speed >S800 >S800 <S B-PHY silicon Port Short haul DS only 6pin DS/Beta 6pin Beta only GOF proposed proposed Long haul Beta only POF/UTP 16
Interoperability (3) Positive impact of a new requirement [ B-PHY silicon ] The proposed requirement can contribute to the cost reduction. - The requirement can expand B-PHY market due to the inclusion of the GOF PMD in the range of S100-S Total market volume of multiple (S100-S800) speed B-PHY silicon can be much larger than that of S800 only B-PHY. 17
Interoperability (4) An example of B-PHY block diagram B-PHY Transceiver 10 Mux Transmitted data Transmitter bport PHY clock 10 Demux Discriminator Receiver State Machine Negotiated speed Upstarts (speed negotiation) Recovered clock Clock Recovery Circuit Received data Cost impact? Signal detect (Tone signal) 18
Interoperability (5) An example of clock recovery circuit operated at S100-S1600 Reference clock Recovered clock Negotiated speed S100 f/2 S200 f/2 selector S400 S800 f/2 f/2 S1600 Frequency Detector VCO Phase Detector Loop filter Received data The cost up due to these additional circuits is negligible. 19
Interoperability (6) Positive impact of a new requirement [ GOF ] The S100-S400 GOF can contribute to the fast market penetration of fully scalable 1394B long haul. - The lack of S100-S400 GOF closes the market entrance of the GOF based long haul The S100-S400 GOF has a real market need in some sort of professional use, which could take emission free and a scalability seriously rather than the cost. 20
Interoperability (7) Positive impact of a new requirement [ POF ] The interoperability problem will be serious, when an S800 POF link becomes available. The proposed requirement solves this problem. - The current POF link has a limited speed scalability up to S200 due to the premature technology in loss and bandwidth. However, in the future, there could be some possibility of operation beyond S400 by a technical breakthrough. 21
Summary of proposal The important point is that we should specify the 1394B to maximize user's benefits as follows. 1) Users can freely select their favorite PMD for a long haul link. 2) The beta port of a B-PHY for a long haul link should be independent on PMDs and fully scalable on operation speeds. It is reasonable to extend the current S800-S m 50MMF specifications to include S100, S200, and S400 since the Gb Ethernet transceiver can work well at the range of S100-S
