3 Employer use of wearables 84 million devices in use in the US (Gartner Group) Use estimated to grow at an average compounded annual rate of 43.4% for the next 5 years! (IDH) Prediction: 170 million devices will be sold in 2016, including many to employers looking to incorporate wearables into wellness programs. 15 Assumptions about data Device data is meaningful to use Ultimately, all of these data are only as good as our ability to effectively use them The majority of these wearables report their data to another interface. Often, the data set is transmitted through an intermediary, such as a smartphone or other device. Then the data are displayed alongside other information sources to create an overall experience. One of the key differentiating factors going forward will be the quality of these interfaces, which is why one of the most important developments in wearables has been the recent trend toward integration with existing devices and service ecosystems. Many companies are involved in fitness and health monitoring, and aggregation of data will be a challenge for the smaller companies competing with major players such as Apple. What are the program features and structures that result in the highest level of sustained engagement (e.g., communications, incentives/rewards, social support, leadership support, company-supported apps)? 3. What best practices of wearable-supported programs are associated with the best engagement rates and behavior change outcomes? 4. Are wearable-supported wellness programs associated with levels of employee engagement with their health? With engagement in their work? 5.
