4 Fundamentals of Ultra Dense 5G Networks with Application to Machine Type Communication Project partners: Finland: Aalto, TUT, UO. China: Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, Peking University, University of Science and Technology of China. Project goals: 1) Development of connectivity and control structures for high carrier frequency systems, 2) Design of new low-latency, low-energy 5G radio interface, 3) Design and development of novel cooperative communication, beamforming and massive MIMO techniques, 4) Development of resource allocation principles for layered UDN deployment, 5) Design principles enabling energy efficient UDN Research status in Finland: Current focus in ultradense 5G networks and machine type communication Many joint publications submitted already to high quality journals and conferences FI-CHI collaboration activities: 4 ACADEMY OF FINLAND Joint seminar held September 3-4 in Oulu
5 Software Defined Hyper Cellular Architecture for Green & Smart Service Provisioning in 5G Networks WP1.2: Energy and spectrum efficient BS coordination under the separation architecture Dynamic and flexible UL/DL TDD in small cells is of high importance in 5G with far-reaching impact (across link & network level). Problem: How to optimize cell specific UL/DL duty cycle as a function of interference, cell density, traffic load? Coordinated vs. Non-coordinated solutions are needed Proposal/Focus: Decoupling across UL/DL but also different RATs; Baselines include: 1) fixed UL/DL transmission patterns; 2) UL/DL from same BS. WP2.1: Content-aware data caching with data BSs/small cells Edge caching is a disruptive component for 5G aiming at reducing latency, improved QoE, turning storage into bandwidth. Cell density- Storage-bandwidth tradeoff: 1) what is the optimal cell density that should b deployed given storage and bandwidth constraints? 2) caching strategies taking into account file popularity, traffic load, storage constraints, etc. Stochastic geometry approach: Challenge is to model and characterize the users quality of experience, (cache hit ratio or other metrics) as a function of random location of base stations, user and content popularity. 5 ACADEMY OF FINLAND
6 Innovation of Transmission Technologies towards 5G Networks Partners: Finland: Aalto, TUT, UO. China: Harbin Institute of Technology, Xi an Jiaotong University, Shanghai Advanced Research Institute Research status in Finland: Current focus on flexible TDD systems and D2D communications Many publications submitted FI-CHI collaboration activities: Meeting at ICC2015 in June Joint seminar in Sept. in Oulu Joint workshop org. at ICC ACADEMY OF FINLAND Project goals:
7 Transmission Technologies for 5G Project partners: Finland: Aalto, TUT, VTT China: WICO, University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, Southeaster University Project goals and research areas Large antenna systems Advanced waveforms and nonorthogonal multiple access Interference management in HetNets 7 ACADEMY OF FINLAND
