For New ATARI MEGA ST 1M Users This manual assumes a certain basic knowledge of the Atari :MEGA ST, i.e. copying files, startup procedures, hierarchical flle structure, etc.) If you are a new AT ARI MEGA ST owner, we suggest you become familiar with the owners manual supplied with _ your ATARIMEGAST. 1bis equipment generates, uses and can radiate radio frequency information, and if not installed in accordance with user's griide, could interfere with radio communications. The high resolution display and controller card have been tested and are found to comply with the limits for a Class A computing device pursuant to Subpart J of Part 15 of the FCC Rules, which are designed to provide reasonable protection against such interference, in which case the user, at his own expense is required to take whatever measures that may be necessary to correct the interference. The cables supplied with this equipment are shielded and created specifically for use on this equipment. The use of shielded I/0 cables are mandatozy when connecting this equipment to any and all optional peripheral host devices. Failure to do so is likely to violate FCC rules. 3 Introduction Congratulations <;>n your purchase of the ATARI SM194 19" high resolution display system for the ATARI MEGA ST. The combination of the ATARI MEGA ST ease of operation combined with the SM194large viewing area will allow you to increase your productivity in all applications. Features of the ATARI MEGA SM194 display system: Contents: Large 19" monochrome screen High resolution (1280 x 960 pixels) OCLI glare reduction panel Intergrated tilt/swivel Internal controller board (plugs into ATARI 1v1EGA ST BUS) SM194 controller board has provisions for a floating point math coprocessor chip for faster use of CAD, spreadsheets, etc. The SM194 display system for the ATARI MEGA ST consists of two boxes: The SM194 monitor box contents: 1 SM194 Monitor The SM194 controller board box contents: 1- SM194 Controller Board 1-9 pin connector and cable 1-3.5" software diskette containing Lhe screen drivers for the SM plastic stand-offs Check to ensure that all of these items are included. 4 Hardware Installation The SM194 controller board for the SM194 monitor is designed for use in the ATARI MEGA ST internal expansion slot. Installation is similar to other ATARI MEGA ST expansion boards. Installation Steps: Power down system Remove cover Remove metal chassis Remove metal bracket from chassis Attach plastic stand-offs Insert controller board into bus slot Ground the controller board Plug in power cable to Power plug (J8) Reassemble chassis and cover Connect cables Install s9ftware 12. Reboot system Static electricity can damage delicate componants on the controller board as well as the ATARI MEGA ST motherboard. Safeguard yourself against static discharges by taking these precautions: avoid carpeted areas touch a grounded surface directly before handling componants avoid low humidity rooms handle circuit boards by their edge with care Step One: 0 Turn the power on the computer OFF and disconnect all cables. Step Two: Remove the top plastic cover by unscrewing the nine screws located in square recesses on the bottom of the computer. Lift off the cover and unplug the battery backup cable from the motherboard. Set the plastic cover aside. Step Three: To remove the metal housing these steps need to be followed in order presented. 1. Straighten out all but one metal tab 2. Unscrew the 3 of the four round screws on the bottom of the CPU to loosed the disk drive unit 3. Straighten out the last tab 4. Slide the metal chassis around the front of the floppy drive and guide the battery backup wire through the square cut-out 5. Slide the plastic panel on the back pon off Page2

5 Step Four: Remove the metal bracket from the metal chassis that covers the back port and put the screw back in place on the metal chassis. Step Five: The controller board is supported by plastic stand-offs and the bus socket. Snap the plastic standoffs into corresponding holes on the controller board and motherboard. See illustration 1, A locations points. Step Six: Insert the controller board into the socket on the motherboard bus slot, ensuring that the plastic,~ standoffs fit into place. Step Seven: Unscrew the screw on the top side of the power supply and place the ground wire round opening between the power supply screw before putting the screw back on.see illustration 1, location B. Step Eight: Plug in the six wire power cable into the ATARI :MEGA ST power plug, location J8 on the motherboard. Location C on Illustration 1. Step Nine: Reassemble the chassis. Pull the battery cable through the hole in the metal chassis and connect it to the connector on the plastic casing. Reassemble the plastic casing by screwing in all 9 screws removed in Step 2. Step Ten: /"\, Connect. the 9 pin monitor cable to the SM194 monitor and the controller board port on the SM194 controller board on the back side of the computer. Page3

6 Software Installation Software Requirements: The ATARI SM194 display system requires TOS 1.4 or higher to operate. The 3 1/2" diskette supplied with the SM194 controller board contains the screen driver for the SM194 monitor. Step Eleven Insert the disk, A TAR! SM194 Screen Driver, into the disk drive and copy the files into the.. Auto" Folder on your boot drive. Step Twelve Turn the power on the SM194 monitor ON. Restart the A TAR! MEGA ST system. Installation is now complete f\. Optional Floating Point Chip The A TAR! MEGA ST controller board comes equipped with socket provisions for a Motorola megahertz math coprocessor chip. The crystal adjacent to the socket also runs at 16 megahertz. If you require a faster 68881, you must replace this clock chip with one of the correct frequency. Page4
