1. Introduction to this article According to TRIZ most problems are standard problems. The standard problems are those which are known to have occurred many times in many places. Besides these problems have been solved by different people in different places (may be in different contexts) at different times. As there are many known solutions to such problems it is possible to abstract the rules of solution from the group of individual solutions. TRIZ provides a set of 76 rules to solve such standard problems. Although Inventive Standards (or standard solutions) is one of the most powerful techniques of TRIZ it is hardly used by any TRIZ practitioner because of its complexity. The objective of this series of articles is to explain the rules in simple language. In the previous articles 1 we discussed the solutions of Class-1 and Class-2. In this article we will discuss all the solutions of Class Class-3: Solutions relating to Transition to Super System and Subsystem A super system is the larger system of which the current system is a part. The subsystems are the smaller systems within the current system. If a car is our current system then car factory or automobile are the super systems and car engine, cooling system, braking system are subsystems. A system may be a part of different super systems from different standpoints. It is obvious to imagine that a system can consist of multiple subsystems. 1 Simplifying TRIZ inventive Standards Part-1 and Part-2, vide reference 10 and 11. Simplifying TRIZ Inventive Standards, by Umakant Mishra 2
The concept of super-system, system and subsystem is application to any domain whether technical or non-technical. It may be worth mentioning that the terms supersystem and subsystem are relative because every system is a subsystem of its super system and is a super-system of its subsystems. The super-systems of an antivirus system are software system, operating system and computer system etc.. The sub-systems of an anti-virus system include various modules/ methods of virus scanning and detection. 2 During the process of evolution many systems (or components) get merged with other systems (or components) to give better results and complex functionalities. However, just merging is not enough. After they are merged, the links between these merged systems (or components) are improved for their better coordination. In the next stage many of these merged systems (or components) get convoluted to a new mono system and repeats the process of merging with other systems (or components) at a different level. The example below shows how the pointing device and keyboard are merged with a display unit. Standard Combining one system with another The efficiency of a system can be improved by combining one system (or component) with another system (or component) thereby forming a bi or poly system. The advantage of a bi or poly system is that it can provide the complex functionality of multiple systems. For example, adding a new hard disk (or a RAID) to our existing computer to increase its storage capacity. 2 Umakant Mishra, Using TRIZ for Anti-Virus Development- Building better software through Continuous Innovation, Chapter-3, page 49, Development-Continuous/dp/ Simplifying TRIZ Inventive Standards, by Umakant Mishra 3
The following S-Field diagram shows the merging of new fields and substances with existing fields and substances of a system. In some cases the whole system is added with other whole systems thereby creating merged systems. For example keyboard, printer, mouse etc. are attached to a computer to work in coordination. Standard Improving links between Merged Systems or System Elements When multiple systems (or components) are merged to build a complex system, it becomes important to improve their links. The links can be more rigid or more flexible (or more of some other feature) so that they work with better coordination and yield better result. Simplifying TRIZ Inventive Standards, by Umakant Mishra 4
For example, in the previous standard (3.1.1) we added multiple hard disks to a computer in order to increase its storage capacity. Using this standard the situation can be improved further by making the hard disk detachable or turning off the hard disk during low battery. However, not only the links between the systems can be improved, but also the links between the system and system elements can also be improved. Standard Increasing the difference between system components Efficiency of bi and poly systems can be improved by increasing the difference between system components. While prima-facie this sounds absurd and difficult to believe, it actually happens in many cases. Often the improvement takes the following path of evolution. Standard Integrating several components into single components Efficiency of bi and poly systems can be improved by integrating several components into a single component. For example, various service packs were added to the Windows XP operating system to improve the performance of the Windows XP operating system (Standard 3.1.1). But later all the service packs were added together with other improvements to bring out a new Operating System such as Windows Vista. Sometimes multiple systems are added together to build a new single system. This integration reduces auxiliary components and results in a single mono system. This new system will again add other systems (or components) in the process of evolution. Simplifying TRIZ Inventive Standards, by Umakant Mishra 5
For example, while improving the earlier situation of adding hard disks, the same set of hard disks can be used as a RAID (Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks) to give additional features beyond storage. Standard Distributing incompatible properties among the system and its parts When a system has properties that are incompatible with its parts (for example, the system has property-a and its parts has property anti-a) then the incompatibility is distributed among the system and its parts. Standard Transition to Microlevel When a system is integrated with too many other systems and becomes complex it is necessary to simplify it. At this stage the whole system (or part) is replaced by a single substance that is capable of delivering the function of the system (or part) that is replaced. Simplifying TRIZ Inventive Standards, by Umakant Mishra 6
3. Conclusion The solutions of class-3 mostly deal with trends and different from the solutions presented in class-1 and class-2. Conventionally these solutions have never been presented in S-Field diagrams. The diagrams presented in this article are innovation of the author. It is possible that some TRIZniks may not accept the validity/ correctness of these diagrams. In such cases the author would welcome critics to give their comments and suggestions. Reference 1.
