CHAPTER 4 Inventory You have now added devices to your network and created static and dynamic views. You are ready to use your device views to generate some reports. The Inventory tasks let you collect and monitor your network inventory data so that you can plan upgrades and rollouts. The following sections are presented in this chapter: Scheduling Inventory Polling and Collection Displaying Inventory Graphs and Reports For detailed information on Inventory, refer to the online help. Inventory 4-1

Scheduling Inventory Polling and Collection Scheduling Inventory Polling and Collection Scenario: After you populate the server with device inventory data, you want to schedule polling and collection of inventory data. Two methods are available for scheduling inventory polling and collection: Inventory polling Schedules periodic polling of all managed devices to detect most changes in managed devices with minimal impact to the network. The poller lets you decrease the frequency of inventory collection because it uses fewer network resources to detect most changes in managed devices. Collection Schedules polling and collects data at regular intervals for each managed device. Both inventory poller and inventory collector changes are displayed in all Change Audit reports. Use Change Audit options to determine the changes that have occurred in your network inventory over a specified period of time. Note Inventory Poller uses fewer network resources and detects reload and chassis changes. Inventory Collector uses more network resources and detects all changes. Scheduling Inventory Polling To set your inventory polling schedule, perform the following steps: Step 1 Select Admin > Inventory > Inventory Poller. The Set Inventory Poller Schedule dialog box displays the current polling schedule. (See Figure 4-1.) 4-2 Getting Started with Resource Manager Essentials

Scheduling Inventory Polling Figure 4-1 Set Inventory Poller Schedule Dialog Box Step 2 Step 3 Set the schedule as follows: State: Select Enabled to poll or Disabled to stop polling. Starting Date: From the drop-down list boxes, select the date to begin polling. Starting Time: Enter the time for polling to begin. Every: Enter the number, and select hours, days, or weeks from the drop-down list box; for example, every 7 days. Click Finish. The new schedule appears. Inventory 4-3

The Set Inventory Collector Schedule dialog box appears. (See Figure 4-2.) Figure 4-2 Set Inventory Collector Schedule Dialog Box Step 2 Step 3 Set the schedule as follows: Starting Date: Select the date to begin collecting inventory information. Starting Time: Select the time to collect inventory information. Every: Enter the number, and select hours, days, or weeks from the drop-down list box; for example, every 7 days. Click Finish. The new schedule appears. 4-4 Getting Started with Resource Manager Essentials

Displaying Inventory Graphs and Reports Displaying Inventory Graphs and Reports Scenario: As the network administrator, you need to upgrade all Cisco IOS release 10.3 routers on the network to release 1.1. To determine the scope of the work, you generate the appropriate reports and graphs. To display a Software Version graph, perform the following steps: Step 1 Select Tasks > Inventory > Software Version Graph. The Software Version Graph dialog box appears. (See Figure 4-3.) Figure 4-3 Software Version Graph Dialog Box Step 2 Select System Views > All Routers in the Views column. The device selection dialog box displays the names of the managed devices that are routers. Inventory 4-5

Displaying Inventory Graphs and Reports Step 3 Step 4 Click All to select all managed routers. Click Finish. The Software Version Graph displays the Cisco IOS versions installed on your managed routers. The count is the total number of devices on which each version is installed. The percentage column displays a bar graph and the numerical percentage of the devices for each software version. (See Figure 4-4.) Figure 4-4 Software Version Graph Step 5 Step 6 Select the desired report type from the drop-down list box to view other reports and graphs for the same device selection, then click Reports. The report or graph appears. Print the report or graph and save it to a file. 4-6 Getting Started with Resource Manager Essentials

Displaying Hardware and Software Reports Displaying Hardware and Software Reports Scenario: You want to see reports that display hardware and software information about your network devices. You want to know the types of chassis that reside on all routers and the software versions they are running. To display hardware and software reports, perform the following steps: Step 1 Select Tasks > Inventory > Hardware Report. The Hardware Report dialog box appears. (See Figure 4-5.) Step 2 Select a view from the Views column. The devices in the view appear in the Devices column. Figure 4-5 Hardware Report Dialog Box Inventory 4-7

Displaying a Detailed Device Report Displaying a Detailed Device Report Scenario: You want to see device inventory data for all Catalyst switches. To see device information, including system and chassis descriptions, chassis cards, interfaces, Cisco IOS image, and Flash memory information, you can generate a detailed device report. Note Prior to generating a Detailed Device Report, be sure to first populate the server with device inventory data. Otherwise, some data does not display correctly. To display a detailed device report, perform the following steps: Step 1 Select Tasks > Inventory > Detailed Device Report. The Detailed Device Report dialog box appears. (See Figure 4-9.) Inventory 4-11

Displaying Inventory Graphs and Reports Figure 4-9 Detailed Device Report Dialog Box Step 2 Step 3 Step 4 Select the devices to include in the report, then click Finish. The report appears.
