8 Scientific Method 1) Ask a Question: Who, What, When, Where, and Why? In order for the scientific method to answer a research question it typically must be about something we can measure - classically with a number or value. 2) Do Background Research: Instead of starting from scratch in putting together a plan for answering the "research question", we want to be savvy scientists using library and peerreviewed research to help find the best way to do things and insure we don't repeat mistakes from the past. 3) Construct a Hypothesis: A hypothesis is an educated guess about how things work: "If [I do this], then [this] will happen." 4) Test the Hypothesis by Doing an Experiment: The experiment tests whether the hypothesis is true or false. 5) Analyze the Data and Draw a Conclusion: Once the experiment is complete, collect the measurements and analyze them to see if the hypothesis is true or false. 6) Communicate the Results: Communicating results is now a multimedia event: print, presentation, video and web.

13 The Association of American Colleges and Universities concludes this annual report recommending that higher education in the 21st Century must shift from a longstanding tradition of remembering facts to a focus on developing abilities for finding and evaluating information, practicing creative problem-solving, engaging in more flexible learning formats, promoting team work and adaptability, and developing high-level critical thinking skills in students. (AACU, 2011)
14 Higher education graduates who are able to display critical thinking skills and who possess critical thinking dispositions will be more prepared to enter the job market as overwhelming research indicates that 21 st Century employers are increasingly seeking applicants with strong critical thinking abilities. (Facione, Giancarlo & Gainen, 2010)
