Tutorial 1: Using Digital Images as the Symbol on a Button The software enables you to create custom symbols from your digital pictures. You can also create integrated scenes by using digital images as the background of the communication page. Why are digital images important? Digital images may be benefi cial for individuals who require more concrete representations of objects and activities than a standard symbol set (ex. DynaSyms or PCS) can provide. Digital images will allow an individual to share life experiences through photographs. Digital images may be more visually appealing for some individuals. Using a digital image as the symbol on a button To optimise storage space, the Series 4 device will limit imported pictures to a maximum size of 800 x 600 pixels. If you import digital images directly onto your Series 4 using a USB storage device, you will need to make sure that your picture is the appropriate size prior to importing. It is recommended that you use the Page Editing software on your computer to create pages with digital pictures. The Series 4 page editing software will automatically resize large images that are being imported for use. The pages containing these images can then be exported and imported on the device. Hint: Before you get started, make sure that you know where the digital images are located on your computer. To use a digital image as the symbol on a button: 1. Launch your Series 4 Page Editing software on your computer 2. Create a new page or navigate to the page that contains the button on which the picture will be placed 3. Select the Modify button 4. Select the button into which you would like to import the picture 5. Select Symbol 6. Select Quick Import 7. Select the Show All Directories checkbox. This will give you access to all directories on your computer 8. In the left viewport, select the directory that contains the desired digital image (UMS_FOLDER for USB storage device) 9. In the right viewport, select the digital image fi le 10. Select OK. The system keyboard will appear 11. Enter the name of the new symbol and select OK to exit the system keyboard 12. Select OK to exit the Modify Button menu. 4
Tutorial 2: Using Digital Images as the Background of a Page The AAC fi eld has recently been examining alternative strategies for displaying symbols on dynamic display devices. Historically, vocabulary has been displayed on AAC devices in a grid format, where symbols are located in separate squares on a grid. These grids are typically organised into rows and columns. With the advancements in technology, integrated scenes are now an option for AAC system layouts. When using this layout strategy, language concepts are embedded into scenes. For example, a picture of the child s playground can be stored in the Series 4 device. Objects and events that occur on the playground are then used as symbols for communication. Behaviors (Speak Text, Go to Page, etc.) can be placed on objects that appear within the scene. Although more research is necessary, it is important to consider this strategy when creating appropirate communication systems for AAC users. To read more on this topic: Drager, K., Light, J., Speltz, J., Fallon, K., and Jeffries, L. (2003). The Performance of Typically Developing 2 1/2-year olds on Dynamic Display AAC Technologies with Different System Layouts and Language Organizations. Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research. Vol Contextual Scenes for Adults with Aphasia, an AAC-RERC project. For more information, go to To use a digital image as the background of a page: 1. Launch your Series 4 Page Editing software on your computer 2. Select the pull-down menu 3. Select Page Editing 4. Select Page Editor 5. Select the pull-down menu 6. Select File 7. Select New Page. The system keyboard popup will appear 8. Enter the new page name 9. Select OK to exit the system keyboard 10. Select the pull-down menu 19. Select Exit Page Editor. 5
Tutorial 3: Adding Active Areas Adding active areas to your digital image to create an integrated scene. Active areas can be used to make the digital image on the background of the page interactive and communicative. Active areas are like invisible buttons that can be placed anywhere on a page or popup. They have no borders or physical characteristics, but they can be assigned a behavior that will initiate an action (speak, go to, etc.) when the active area is selected. To draw an active area on a communication page: 1. Navigate to the page on which you would like to draw an active area 2. Select the pull-down menu 3. Select Page Editing 4. Select Page Editor 5. Select the Active Area tool in the Tools palette 6. Maintain contact with the page and drag your fi nger to draw out an active area. Lift your fi nger when the active area is the desired size and shape. The Behavior Editor menu will appear. 7. Select the desired behavior in the left viewport 8. Select Add. The system will prompt you to enter any information if necessary. If information is required, supply the information and then select OK when fi nished. 9. Repeat step 7-8 until all of the desired behaviors have been added to the button 10. Select OK to exit Behavior Editor menu 11. Repeat steps 5-9 to add other active areas to your page 12. Select the pull-down menu button 13. Select Exit Page Editor. 6
Tutorial 4: Moving Pages from Editing Software to Your Device Once you have created communication pages using your DynaVox Page Editing software, you will need to move them to your Series 4 device. There are two ways to move pages from the software to your Series 4 device. 1. Export and Import pages (1-2 pages) 2. Create a Package (more than 2 pages) Both of these procedures will include your new page and any digital images that are attached to the page. 10 Tutorial 5: Practical Ways to Use Digital Images 1. Use digital pictures on the Series 4 to create writing activities for emergent writers. Place a Message Window on the page that contains the digital picture. Create active areas with an Insert Text behavior on the objects and people in the picture. When the individual selects the objects or people in the picture, text will be sent to the Message Window. Add a print button to the sequence of pages so that a hard copy of the story can be generated. Active area with an Insert Text behaviour Message window 2. Use digital pictures on the Series 4 to create a virtual scrapbook. Digital pictures can enhance an AAC user s social participation by providing visual support of their achievements and interests. In addition, digital pictures give an individual the ability to retrieve and communicate about past personal events and share personal stories (vacation, job site, etc.). Add vocabulary to the pages that will encourage commenting, asking partner-focused questions, and sharing information. 3. Use digital pictures on the Series 4 to enhance learning. Use the internet to locate graphics to supplement learning materials. The image of Mexico shown below was found at in the Images library. Hint: Add active areas on the map to identify locations of interest 10
Tutorial 5: Practical Ways to Use Digital Images 4. Use digital images to create simple choice pages for individuals who respond well to concrete representations of people, places, and objects. Take digital pictures of personal objects, activities and places that the individual enjoys. Use these images to create personalized choice pages. 5. Use digital images to transfer important instructions to caregivers. This will allow the AAC user to independently communicate preferences for positions, feeding, wheelchair maintenance, lifting, etc. These pages can be used to manage personal care attendants and unfamiliar communication/ care partners. 6. Create a virtual book by taking digital images of the pages of a child s favorite book. Program the text of the book into active areas so that the child can read independently. Also, program Go To buttons so that the child can independently turn the pages. Program a Speak Text behaviour to read the text of the book Go To button - to turn to the next page 7. Use Social Stories (Gray, C ) paired with digital images to give visual cues to students with challenging behaviors. Social Stories help identify the situation in which challenging behaviors are demonstrated and then offers alternatives to the undesirable behavior. Using the story format provides a non-threatening means to offer examples of more appropriate responses. With digital images, you can provide the student with pictures of themselves participating in an appropriate manner. 11
Tutorial 5: Practical Ways to Use Digital Images 8. Use a picture of a favorite website and program computer access behaviors that allow navigation to different web pages or activities. Tip: For more information on computer access, visit Click on the 24/7 Tech Support link at the top of the page. Search for key word computer access. 12
