2 What is Google+ Google s answer to Facebook (and so much more) The glue that holds all your Google products (Gmail, Google Docs, Youtube etc) Second biggest social network in the UK In January 2013 its user base surpassed Twitter Approximately 359 million active users Integral to Google search A bit dull... 2
3 Why! Why Google Plus? Search Engine Optimisation 2011: Zagat restaurant review site bought by Google May 2012: Zagat algorithm integrated into Google search rankings Prior to this, SEO relied heavily on copy, backlinks, reciprocity and by association, directories Google +1s are now integrated into Google search results 3
4 Eh? SEO was quite scientific back in the day Teams of people could work the system to help businesses (that could afford them) achieve better results. Now? You ve all heard of WYSIWYG? (What you see is what you get). Google now brings us WYKIWYG (Who you know is what you get)! 4
5 So why did Google change it? Google wanted their search results to be more human Google Plus helps achieve this. So.... Google Plus profiles Google Plus pages Google Plus reviews Google Plus website buttons 5
6 What does it look like? Off The Wall 6
7 A few tips Get your Google+ custom URL (Since October 2013). Accounts must be in good standing, over 30 days old, with 30 or more followers and featuring a profile photo. Ensure your profile photo fits in a circle (minimum 250*250 pixels) Add a compelling tagline. (The About section under your page s business name) Use the About space fully. Use Keywords Add links in the Recommended Links section. 7
8 Blimey, more tips?!? Yes. More tips. Circles Use them and manage them effectively. The Circles feature allows you to segment your followers and people they follow. This powerful tool allows you to send focussed messages to specific groups. You can segment your contacts into Circles of current customers, prospective customers or new customers etc. (More later!) Turn off alerts! These are turned on by default when you set up the page, but get annoying. Fast. Go to Menu> Settings> Receive notifications 8
9 Optimising your Google+ Page The meta description of a local business page is the description you enter about your business. Make it count! Use keywords and hashtags. Use the G+ button on your site How? Simple! (or ask your developer!) Create engaging content that people want to share >> 9
10 How to create engaging content 1. Create a title (use the asterisk symbol at the beginning & end) 2. For a second headline use underscores (Italicizes) 3. Create a summary of what your sharing 4. Give the reader a clear link (use a URL shortener like goog.gl) 5. Share your thoughts on what you are sharing 6. Ask questions 7. Use hashtags 8. Images are gold dust, use them! Be creative. 1, 7 and 8 are crucial, but mix up 2 6) 10

12 Circles As in all social networks, interact with your friends and followers regularly. The circle feature in Google+ lets you segment your followers. As a business you can send out select status updates to select people for instance Current customers Prospective customers Suppliers Etc. 12
