3 Setting up a Personal or Group Web site can be complex and require special technical knowledge and skills. Most Web sites require a local PC to build the web site, and a Hosting Server. However there are other ways to achieve a good result using a free wordpress.com web site facility. This Free version has some restrictions and limitations, but should allow enough space for personal or Group users. The First step in setting up a Free Wordpress Web site is to register and choose a suitable name or Domain. You can select a unique web site name, or register a new Domain name ( which may incur an annual fee). Once you have selected your site name and a theme etc, you can start building your new web site pages or Blog. By default Wordpress will allocate you about 3GB of Space which should allow sufficient number of Pages and Posts with Media Files etc.

15 The First time you create a web site it will automatically setup Three Pages which you can edit later to customise you site. These pages are:- Home - This page will be the Default start page which peoplee will see first About - This is where you can put the information about your organisation, and other information such as Meeting Location, dates and Times Contact - This is where you can setp your contact details with address, names, phone numbers etc. Also a Contact Form which users can fill in and will be sent to a Private address. 19 Customising your Web site - Here is where you can Custom Design various things such as Colours and Fonts, Menu items and Images. Also Widgets which can add new features and content to your web site

20 Widgets Plugins and Widgets Widget is a fancy word for tools or content that you can add, arrange, and remove from the sidebar(s) of your blog. Widgets make it easy to customize the content of your sidebar(s). You can access your widgets from the My Sites Customize. (You ll see that option to the right of Themes on that menu.) This takes you to the Customizer, where you ll be able to add and remove and configure widgets for your site. Plugins Plugins are tools used to extend the functionality of the WordPress platform. However, they are only applicable to self-hosted blogs and web sites using the WordPress.org software. Plugins are not permitted here at WordPress.com for various security reasons.

22 Images»Adding Images to Posts or Pages Learn how to add images to your posts from your computer, another website, or your Media Library. Note: Some of the instructions from this guide are referring to the WP Admin dashboard. You can get to this dashboard by adding /wp-admin to the end of your site s url (e.g.: example.wordpress.com/wp-admin) Insert an Image from your Computer 1 Place your cursor where you want your image to appear. 2 Drag your image from your computer to the editor.

23 Insert an Image from your Media Library 1 Place your cursor where you would like the image to appear, and click on the Add Media icon found directly above your editor. 2 Locate the image you wish to insert and select it. You ll be able to navigate among Images, Documents, Videos and Audio files. Note that the two options are only available with the WordPress.com Premium and Business plans. 4 You will be able to edit the image s settings before inserting your image. These fields will already be populated if you previously added the information when you uploaded your image to the Media Library. To learn more about these settings, visit our page on Image Settings. 6 When finished choosing your image settings, click Insert at the bottom.

24 Image Alignment When inserting images into your posts and pages, you can have your text wrap around them. Just click on your inserted image to select it, then choose the alignment you want.

28 Security Tips For WordPress Websites The Basics First up, let us focus on certain basic points that you must consider and bear in mind, irrespective of the configuration or nature of your WordPress site. Always ensure that the software that you are running is of the latest version. Be sure to keep your WordPress installation up to date. More importantly, also update your plugins and themes regularly. Furthermore, if a given plugin or theme has not been updated in a long time, say over a year or two, avoid using it. Use strong passwords, and by all means, do not use the default admin username for the administrator account.never put your address on web site. It will be harvested and spammed. Always use a form for contact from the user to you, until they have registered. Use a spam blocker like Akismet. Use Captcha type device to detect and prevent robots spamming site responses.

29 Advanced Wordpress Users can use the Wordpress Desktop Login This allows them to access more features and setup some additional facilities. To access the WP Desktop, the user needs to login using a different URL:-

31 The WP Dashboard menu list contains several options which allows the web site operator to setup more features and select what is displayed on the live site. Remember you can setup Hidden pages, which are not displayed on the live web site until you enable them, also you can use an Events Manager Widget which will display future events on a Calendar display.

32 Backups If your blog is hosted here at WordPress.com, we handle all necessary backups. If a very large meteor were to hit all the WordPress.com servers and destroy them beyond repair, all of your data would still be safe and we could have your blog online within a couple of days (after the meteor situation died down, of course). But if you want to back up your blog content manually, you are free to do so by using the My Site Settings, Export tab option described above. This is certainly still a good idea, especially if you ve assigned additional users to your blog. Editors and administrators have the ability to delete any posts or pages, and there is no way to recover material that they remove from your blog.
