SSML SSML is a markup based XML language and a subset of VoiceXML (VXML) and was specified by the world wide web consortium (W3C) to build advanced speech synthesis applications. With SSML it is possible to augment text parts with informations such as emphasis, volume, pitch or for example the duration of a text part that the speech synthesis can interpret then. A detailed description of all SSML tags can be found on the W3C website at The Aristech CereVoices furthermore support non W3C standardized tags. This document is a guide for the most important standard and non standard SSML tags. <break/> The break tag is the only self closing tag and can set breaks of a specific duration. The tag can be described with the time attribut (recommended) with a time value in seconds or milliseconds. Alternative the tag can be described with the values x-weak, weak, medium, strong or x-strong in the strength attribut. However it is also possible to use a blank break tag which has the consequence, that the break length is is an interpretation of the TTS such as the strength attribut. This can lead to different break durations with different TTS voices. Are you serious?<break time="1s"/> I m talking to you! Are you serious?<break strength="x-strong"/> I m talking to you! Are you serious?<break/> I m talking to you!
<emphasis/> The emphasis tag specifies how strong a word or text range is emphasized. The tag is specified by it s level attribut which must contain one of the following values: reduced, moderate, strong or none. That is a <emphasis level="strong">huge</emphasis> challenge! The prosody tag can adjust the volume, speed, duration or even the pitch of text ranges. The allowed attributes are volume, rate, duration, pitch and contour. <prosody volume/> The volume attribute can contain floating point values, which specifie the multiple volume for the marked range or the values silent, x-soft, soft, medium, loud, x-loud and default. Beispiele <prosody volume="0.3">quiet please! This is a library.</prosody> <prosody volume="2.0">can you talk louder please?</prosody> <prosody volume="x-soft">only susurrate please.</prosody>
<prosody rate/> The rate attribut can adjust the speaking speed with the values x-slow, slow, medium, fast, x-fast and default. <prosody rate="x-fast">hurry up! I have to go.</prosody> <prosody rate="x-slow">i m totally tired.</prosody> <prosody duration/> The duration attribut can specifie the duration of a text range precisely with values in seconds or milliseconds <prosody duration="4s">wow!</prosody> what was that?
<prosody pitch/> The pitch attribute specifies the pitch of the marked text range. It can contain floating point multiple values like in the volume tag or one of the values: x-low, low, medium, high, x-high or default <prosody pitch="1.5">i like helium balloons.</prosody> <prosody pitch="0.7">i don t.</prosody> I am <prosody pitch="high">so Happy.</prosody> The sub tag can be used to replace abbreviations with their full text representation with the alias attribute. W3C
CereVoice tags <usel/> The CereVoice usel tag can specifie a alternative pronounciation for a word with the variant attribute. The values can be 0-30 where 0 is the default pronounciation. How do you pronounce <usel variant="3">quantitatively</prosody>? <phoneme/> With the phoneme tag and it s ph attribut the correct pronounciation for a word can be specified with the CereVoice phone sets. <phoneme ph="dzh ih1 n s">jeans</phoneme> <lex/> (not recomended) The lex tag can describe the pronounciation of a word with the CereVoice phone set like the phoneme tag. However we recommend to use the phoneme tag instead. <lex phonemes="dzh ih1 n s">jeans</lex>
