2 19.0 OVERVIEW Pearson is pleased to announce the release of the Schoolnet Instructional Improvement System Version 19.0 Based on your feedback and in anticipation of your needs, we have made a series of improvements across the Schoolnet suite. Some of the key highlights from this release include: Navigation: A new global site navigation and page design Classroom Assessment Monitoring: Expanded functionality to the existing teachercentric Classroom Assessment Monitoring widget Standards Performance Report: Usability improvements and expansive new features added to the Standards Performance Report Data Collection Report: Ability to export a list of students who have not taken the assessment Test Details Export: Ability to export student responses and points achieved for each student on any assessment Saved and Published Reports: The ability to update saved and published reports, if given the proper report management rights Graphic Gap Match and Hot Text: Two new item types to supported via vendor import only Positive Sign Support for the Gridded Item Type: Support for a positive sign in addition to the negative sign for gridded student responses Scoring Audit Log: Ability to track the scoring method Undetermined Column for Classrooms Standards Mastery: Ability to track students who did not answer any questions associated to the standard Schoolnet Plugin for PowerSchool: Support SSO for PowerSchool clients TestNav: Students now can have access to a spell checker within TestNav TestNav Configuration: Ability to configure TestNav as the only available online test tunnel 2

4 IMS ENHANCEMENTS New Look and Feel: Schoolnet Site Navigation. A new global site design improves and modernizes the experience of navigating the Schoolnet application. The navigation redesign aims to make site navigation more intuitive and to create more direct paths to functionality for users. With an increased number of links in the site navigation, users will enjoy a more direct path to target pages like creating tests, materials, items and reports. By adjusting the link categories in the navigation and introducing navigation tooltips, the new navigation gives new or basic users an easier time in determining where they need to go. Global site navigation has shifted to a left-positioned sidebar. The site s top horizontal bar, shorter in height, continues to contain all other application features: student search, user notifications, account settings, sign out, district selector (state sites only), and links to User Management and System (select users only). These modifications allow more page content to display on screen at one time. Users can opt to minimize or expand the sidebar s display; this setting persists across user sessions. Note: The sidebar will automatically display in collapsed mode for users with no expandable sidebar links (namely parents and students) and in smaller browser windows (page width <= 1260 pixels). The sidebar offers more links than the previous navigation, allowing users to jump directly to the following additional pages: Benchmark Tests Dashboard, Create Test, Create Item, Create Material, Create Report, Pending Materials, and My Materials. Navigation links are grouped differently, with more functional link category names. For example, Instructional Materials is its own navigation category, within which users can click Find Material, My Materials, and Create Material. The former navigation tab of Assessment Admin has changed to a category of Assessments for better end user recognition. Admin-level links are grouped into separate Admin navigation categories (Instructional Materials Admin, Assessments Admin). 5 Classroom Assessment Monitoring Widget The first two tabs of the Classroom Assessment Monitoring widget, designed to provide classroom-level performance summaries of current benchmark and classroom assessments, have undergone a visual and functional overhaul to maximize usability and utility. The enhancements to this critical teacher tool will enable teachers to see overall and standardsbased performance for any current year benchmark or classroom assessment, all without leaving their Schoolnet homepage. Teachers can spend less time searching and more time analyzing and responding to their findings. A subject picker allows teachers to select tests from any subject, not just the default subject for the selected course/section. A user-friendly test picker displays all current year tests taken by the selected section, within the selected subject area. Overall section performance shows beside the test name, to help teachers quickly identify the low-performing tests needing further analysis. The widget provides real-time performance aggregations, comparing section test performance to the test s school, region, and district averages. The widget offers overall and standardsbased test performance detail at the section and student level, in a visually-rich format. The widget links to contextualized Classrooms reports, for deeper analysis. Screenshot 1: Overall class performance Educators and administrators can use this widget as a faster, more convenient path to Classroom reporting. They can use the widget to find any current year test for the selected section, then use the widget s report links to drill into contextualized Classroom reports for the selected section and test. : These are enhancements to the existing Classroom Assessment Monitoring widget, displaying on the My Schoolnet homepage. The widget must be added to the user s default widget view in order for it to appear. It works in conjunction with the My Classroom widget, displaying test and performance data for the section selected in My Classroom. The performance metric used by the widget s donut chart and the test performance dropdown is configurable and can reflect Percent Correct or Percent Correct. This configuration is located in System Classrooms Reporting, and also controls the performance metric that shows on the Benchmark Dashboard, in Classrooms Student Performance. 6 Standards Performance Report Dashboard Enhancements Updates have been made to the Standards Performance Report s dashboard page that expand the report s utility and depth. The newest report in Schoolnet, designed to examine classroom and student standards performance across multiple assessments, has a modified look that reduces user clicks and report browsing time. Additional report options, based on customer feedback, connect the report to other Schoolnet areas and make it more versatile. An interactive standards tree replaces the report s tile-based standards dashboard. Users can expand a standard to see a performance breakdown by substandards across the selected tests. Choose a metric to display: Proficiency / Score Groups, or % Correct. A M link searches materials aligned to the corresponding standard. Two new standards options further expand the report s reach: o Show Primary Standards Only: uncheck this to report on both primary and non-primary item alignment performance. o Show Assessed Standards Only: un-check this to see all standards in a tree, to visualize which skills have not been assessed. A new, optional Test Category filter, when enabled, restricts the selection of tests to those in a common test category. Teachers, coaches and school administrators can use this report to understand standards. These changes are designed to benefit all educators who create, edit or use instructional materials in Schoolnet. The Standards Performance Report can be accessed from the navigation sidebar by expanding the Classrooms category and clicking the Standards Performance link. For teachers, the report will open directly to the teacher s first section and all tests from the past 6 weeks in that section s subject area. Administrators will need to first search for and select a teacher before the report will show results. The report can also be accessed from the Classroom Assessment Monitor page, when a section and test have been selected. A new configuration, imposing the selection of a single Test Category on the report before tests can be selected, is located in System Classrooms Reporting. It is disabled by default. 7 Data Collection Report Updates to the Data Collection Report allow the user to view all student s collection status for a specific teacher and/or to export a list of all students who have not taken the assessment. Data Collection report changes will help administrators/teachers track the completion rates for student s taking an assessment and identify those students who still need to take the assessment. The report can group students by teacher in addition to by section. The report can export a list of uncollected students to follow up on students who need to complete the assessment. 8 Test Results Export A new option for teachers and administrators to export tests results is located under the Status & Student Comments section of Test Details. Each user will have the ability to export test results according to their default institution and permission structure. This export will include all student response along with achieved points for each question. A.csv file of student item responses and points can be downloaded from Test Details Note: Students will be included based on the user s permissions The.csv file contains: - Student Name - Test ID - Test Date - Points Possible - Percent Correct - Score Group - Per Question Response and Points Teachers and administrators who would like extracts of all student responses and associated points achieved per question.. 9 Updating Saved and Published Reports Saved and published reports can be modified by appropriately permissioned users. : Previously, if any aspect of a saved report needed to be adjusted (such as a modified data filter or an updated display option) the user would need to create and save a new report with those selections. If the old report were published, the publication would need to be retracted, and the new report would then need to be published. Now, it is possible update an existing report, seamlessly overwriting the previous one. : Report managers responsible for maintaining report banks must often make small modifications to existing reports, so that they examine the latest benchmark test, or the most recent marking period s attendance, or the most recent state test results. Report managers will simply edit the published report as desired, and upon save, opt to update the existing report, rather than save a new one. When a saved or published report is opened but then edited in some way, the save page offers an additional Update Existing Report tab. If the report is published, only the users who have Manage reports rights at all the institutions to which the report has been published will see the Update Existing Report option on Save. Upon updating a published report, the user will be directed to the report s publication details page. From here, they may review how the report has been distributed, and make changes where needed to the report s publication options. Screenshot 1: Updating a Published Report All pre-existing Save pages for Schoolnet report types offer an Update Existing Report tab if the user has rights to update and overwrite the saved report they have edited. If the saved report is a student set, then the Save Student Set link on Define Student Sets will show an Update Existing Report tab. If the saved report is an analysis spreadsheet or saved columns, then the Save Columns link on the analysis spreadsheet view page will show an Update Existing Report tab. If the saved report is a pre-formatted or custom report, then the Save Report link on the top of the report will show an Update Existing Report tab. Screenshot 2: Updating a Saved Student Set 9

10 Hot Text Item Type A new technology enhanced item called Hot Text is available, which allows students to select certain words or phrases presented within surrounding text. All Schoolnet reports, portals, and item/test details pages are supported. Technology enhanced items (TEIs) allow online test-takers to demonstrate their knowledge in intuitive ways. Supporting this additional TEI further increases Schoolnet s compatibility with third-party item banks and assessments. Hot areas can be single letters, words, or phrases. The maximum number of selections a student can make is configurable. All or none scoring is supported. Hot Text items are fully compatible with pattern scoring and evidence based questions. Authoring of this item type is not supported. Students can answer Hot Text questions online using the Online Test Tunnel powered bytestnav, Teachers and content creators can search for, view, and preview Hot Text items in Item Central. Teachers and content creators can add Hot Text items in Item Central to their tests and then view and preview them in the assessment. 11 Graphic Gap Match Item Type A new technology enhanced item called Graphic Gap Match is available which allows students to drag graphical answer choices into gaps that were drawn on top of an image. All Schoolnet reports, portals, and item / test details pages are supported. Technology enhanced items (TEIs) allow online test-takers to demonstrate their knowledge in intuitive ways. Supporting this additional TEI further increases Schoolnet s compatibility with third-party item banks and assessments. PNG, JPG, and GIF formats are supported for answer choices and the canvas image. The number of times an answer choice can be used and the number of answer choices that can be placed in a gap are configurable. Answer choices can be placed above, below, to the left, or to the right of the canvas. All or none scoring is supported. These items are compatible with pattern scoring and evidence based questions. Authoring of this item type is not supported. 12 Gridded Response Item A new gridded response option, positive sign, is available when creating this item type. Allows item creators to include positive sign bubble as an option along with the pre-existing negative sign bubble. Display both a positive sign bubble and negative sign bubble in the response grid box when that option is enabled for the item. A response will be recorded as positive in value if either the positive bubble is shaded or if the response does not have the negative sign bubble shaded. Any users with the operation to create test items or create tests for an institution (includes teachers). Students taking an assessment with this gridded response option enabled. Item creation. 13 Powerschool SSO plugin There is a new plugin to support Single Sign On between Schoolnet and PowerSchool. The plugin allows clients to continue to access the Schoolnet application via Powerschool. There is no change to user functionality, only to the method used to invoke the single sign on capability. Continue to allow administrators (leadership), teachers, and students to single sign on between Powerschool and Schoolnet Allows parents to see Schoolnet assessments in the Powerschool parent portal. 15 Scoring Audit Log enhancement The Scoring audit log has been modified to capture the method in which a student s score has been modified. The scoring audit log will track the way in which a score for a student was changed. This will allow administrators additional visibility into understanding how scores have been modified. A new data field in the report called scoring method has been added. Scoring method types include: Scanit, Online Assessment, File Upload, and Score Page. The export for the scoring audit has been updated with the Scoring Method. The history on the scoring record has been updated with the Scoring Method. 16 Undetermined score group in the Standards Mastery report The Standards Mastery report available in the Student Performance section of the Classrooms module has been updated to show an undetermined score group. Students that do not answer any questions on a test under a particular standard will be listed under undetermined instead of under the lowest score group. On certain types of assessments, it is vital to differentiate between students who are underachieving on a standard and students for which there is not enough data to make any conclusion. The undetermined column can be used to make a differentiation between students who answered incorrectly and those who didn t answer at all. This score group can be enabled on a test category by test category basis. Printing and exporting all data is fully supported. Undetermined students can be added to a new or existing student group. 17 TestNav New Rich Text Editor spell check functionality : When tests, or items, have the open response options Rich text formatting toolbar and Spell Check selected; students taking the test via TestNav will have a new spell check option to ensure they have used correct spelling in their response. While editing an item a teacher can select the Spell Check option when the rich text formatting toolbar is selected. When creating or editing a test, the Test item defaults Use Rich Text Formatting and Enable Spell Check can be selected for all open response items on the test. 18 TestNav Configuration Schoolnet can be configured to use TestNav as the only available test tunnel for online delivery of assessments. When the TestNav configuration is enabled, Schoolnet is updated to display supported tools, manipulatives and open response settings available for the Online Test Tunnel powered by TestNav. Compatibility warnings have been added to help communicate if an item/assessment has an unsupported feature. Once the configuration is enabled, all newly created items/assessment will have only supported features available. Compatibility warnings will display for any unscheduled assessment leveraging Schoolnet Online Test Tunnel only supported features. Any scheduled assessment will maintain the test tunnel selection and all associated supported features. Any copied assessments from a prior year will be copied with unsupported features removed. 19 Schoolnet Proctor Dashboard The Proctor Dashboard requires constant communication between Schoolnet and TestNav to display results. A few features have been implemented to reduce this network traffic, ensuring more bandwidth for students taking the test. In order to reduce network traffic between Schoolnet and TestNav, the Proctor Dashboard will refresh every 60 seconds. A countdown timer is included to show the proctor when the next refresh will occur. A Refresh Now link is available, and when selected will refresh the dashboard results. If the test has not been published to the Online Test Tunnel powered by TestNav, the proctor dashboard will not contain any information. 20 NOTEWORTHY IIS ENHANCEMENTS Assessments / Assessments Admin In the case of a failed student test submission to Schoolnet, the Online Test Tunnel powered by TestNav will retry the submission. Student response deletion has been enhanced for better usability. Students are also prevented from starting their test until the deletion process has completed. TestNav will automatically save students open response answer at 30-second intervals. The Enforce Test Time scheduling option is based on the server time plus an offset instead of your computer's time. This offset is defined in a system configuration. When modifying an item on a test, points can no longer be awarded for the No Response option. The scoring page now rounds percent correct to a single decimal instead of to a whole number. Classrooms On the Standards Performance Report, when clicking on a standard that was assessed only once, the resulting Standards Performance Detail view shows an alternative singletest layout. A donut chart replaces what would otherwise be a bar chart by test, and the student line graph (student standards performance over time) does not display Filter selections made on the Standards Performance Report will now persist across the user s browser session so that users who navigate away and then back to the report can pick up where they left off The Standards Detail view of the Standards Performance Report includes a link to search materials aligned to the standard. The page also allows the user to switch the report s display between two performance metrics: % Correct, and Proficiency/Score Groups. In Classrooms Student Performance Student Analysis, where published column reports are displayed for teacher use, modifications have been made to offer the teacher a more consumable and usable list of reports, now all on a single page: o Reports are now grouped by Report Category o Teachers can filter the list to show reports from one or more category, for a leaner list o Report descriptions are hidden by default but appear when the Show Report Description checkbox is selected When a test is modified after the Score Due Date has passed, the test s statistics are triggered to recalculate overnight so that they accurately reflect the rescored data. On both the Classroom Summary Statistics report and the Student Profile, where test-level performance statistics are displayed, a date stamp now indicates when the statistics were last calculated. If statistics are pending recalculation, these pages will indicate this rather than displaying outdated performance statistics. Materials that are linked to material types which are not enabled for private approval can be fully approved. Previously, a logic conflict prevented the approval from taking place because the linked material was not in itself configured to be available for private review Classroom reports, when reporting only on primary alignments, consistently reflect standards-based performance on only the items where the standard is a primary alignment. The Skills Analysis Report PDF dynamically reflects what is shown on screen for the report, rather than always outputting the lowest level standards display. 20

21 School & District Data Support of additional characters for KPI display names. The first KPI display line can contain up to 70 characters, and the second line up to 50 characters. Published report details indicate the roles to which the report has been published. Saved report details provide information about the report s most recent modification, including the name of the user who modified the report as well as the date when the report was last modified. Analysis spreadsheet columns can be designed to show the number of attendance events within a specified date range, rather than across an entire school year. This applies also to disciplinary events. System On Design tab of General System Settings, the System Operator can separately determine whether the site image shows on the login screen and on the navigation s top bar. User module permissioning, formerly managed on the Tabs tab of General System Settings, is located in a renamed Module Access settings page. Terminology has been changed to align with the site navigation s shift away from tab-based design. 21
