7 Short Answer Questions Answer each question in 2-4 sentences. 1. What is the difference between individual and metasearch search services? Individual search engines index the searched space and store links in a database; metasearch engines use several independent search engines, but do not do indexing themselves they may organize the results of the search engines or just list the links provided 2. Contrast search engines vs. subject directories. Briefly describe when your search might require one or the other or both. Search engines accept queries and use them to search their indexes and databases; subject directories organize indexes by subject. Search engines are useful when you have a good and specific idea of what information you are seeking; subject directories are useful if you are doing a less precise search or don t know how to form a query. They can be use together by first using a subject directory to refine your search and the queries to locate results, or vice versa you may find the a search engine returns links that suggest categories. 3. Explain how IMAP mail, POP mail and Web-based mail (e.g., Googl ) differ. IMAP servers retain originals of messages on the server and a mail reader is used to read (and perhaps retain) copies of those messages on a client POP servers allow messages to be downloaded (perhaps retaining copies) to a client mail reader to be stored and read Web-based mail systems both retain originals of messages on the server and provide a server-based mail reader (nothing downloaded to client) 4. What does the well-formed requirement of XHTML mean? (Hint: see multiple choice questions) XHTML elements must be properly nested XHTML elements must always be closed XHTML elements must be in lowercase XHTML documents must have one root element At least 3 of these 5. Explain the pros and cons of subject directories. (Hint: see multiple choice questions) Pros: Hierarchically organized into browsable subject categories and subcategories May also provide fewer results out of context than search engines. Cons: Most directories do not compile databases of their own Dead links are a real problem for subject directories, 7
8 at least one of each 6. Explain the pros and cons of using external frames as a webpage layout method. Pros: A frameset composes the browser window of individual frame elements, each of which is its own complete html document. Can develop frames independently Cons: Some browsers that are frames-incapable Have to include no-frames content Often misused Functionality can be achieved with more standard HTML at least one of each 7. Assume you have created an array of pets: var mypets = new Array(); mypets[0] = "dog"; mypets[1] = "cat"; mypets[2] = "goldfish"; </script> a) Add a for loop to print out the array (add code below): [5 pts.] var mypets = new Array(); mypets[0] = "dog"; mypets[1] = "cat"; mypets[2] = "goldfish"; for (i=0;i<mypets.length;i++) document.write(mypets[i] + "<br />"); </script> 8
