1 11 Things To Look for to Avoid Buying A Penalized PBN Site Note: No cans of Spam were hurt during the making of this bad ass list. P.S. - I'm not acutally a karate chop expert even though it looks like I am. P.S.S. - I'm not a male model, don't let that beautiful mustache fool you. These tips are just guidelines, and not set in stone. There are exceptions to every rule, so if you start complaining that you don't agree with something I said... I will take your mother out for a steak dinner and never call her back! Page 1

2 1) Ahrefs - Subdomain Spam It's fishy if you see several different subdomains from the same root domain giving links (I see this mostly with Asian links) There are exceptions to this rule, like some of the more popular web 2.0s that use subdomains - such as Wordpress. Page 2

3 2) Ahrefs - High OBLs Spam When you see a couple hundred OBLs for the top links, it's probably some spam. (The bolded number next to the red arrows are the number of outbound links [OBLs].) Especially if they are no-follow links (indicated by the symbol the green arrow is pointing at). Even if they are legitimate links, the link juice will be very diluted. This is not usually a good sign. This is almost always an instant way to tell me not to buy a domain. As my grandma used to say "F*ck this shit, I'm out." Page 3

4 3) Ahrefs - Big Spike in Link Veolicty This site gained around 4000 referring domains in less than 2 months (I hate their graphs by the way, don't tell John Ahrefs I said that). This is a big flag. It isn't natural for a domain to get that many links in that short of a time period. When it comes to links, I think its better to err on the side of not making it rain via links. Page 4

5 4) Ahrefs - High Anchor Text Percentages Anytime you see super high anchor text density, there's a chance it's gotten penalized. At 64% density for one of the keywords, this example is completely over-optimized. I would be cautious of anything that has anchor text percentages higher than high teens (18%+). That's not to say it couldn't still work as a PBN, just be careful. Page 5

6 5) Google - Indexed Pages Check Check to see if the website is indexed in google. Do this by going to google.com and typing site:website-name-goes-here.com If there is 0 results, it could be a sign that the domain got penalized and deindexed, but there's a lot of exceptions to this. Generally if you see some of the other signs of spam + it isn't indexed, you shouldn't get the domain. Page 6

7 6) Moz - Higher DA than PA Sometimes when you see a DA (domain authority) value higher than the PA (page authority) of the root domain - this can indicate that subdomains were created for that site and then spammed. This would lead to the DA being inflated to a higher number. This is also referred to in the first tip. Page 7

8 7) Whois - Number of Drops Generally, the more drops a domain has, the more likely it is to be a bad domain. A drop is when someone lets the domain expire and doesn't renew it. So for this domain, it was bought and the person let it expire 4 times. Page 8

9 8) Wayback Machine - Questionable Past Part 1 Look for gaps in history larger than a year. This could indicate that the domain was dropped. Page 9

10 Quality Control for PBN sites 9) Wayback Machine - Questionable Past Part #2 Compare some of the screenshots to see if the site was repurposed at all. The theme of this site changed from golf, to mortgages, to Michael Kors. Someone hit it and quit it a few too many times for my liking. Avoid getting sites like this. Page 10

11 Quality Control for PBN sites 10a) Faking Page Rank Don't be this guy. You didn't find a page rank 9 domain. That just doesn't happen. See 10b) for how to prevent this. Page 11

12 10b) Faking Page Rank It works like this: Someone 301 redirects non PR domain (I'll call this domain 1) to a domain that has PR (I'll call this domain 2) Then a PR update happens. Domain 1 will now show the PR of domain 2. Here's how your check this: 1. Go to the google searchbar and type info:website-goes-here.com 2. Look at the URL result that shows up, if it doesn't match the original one... YOU'VE BEEN HOODWINKED BY A DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDREL. 13 11) Bad Anchors If the domain has anchor text that involves porn, pills, poker, or payday loans - don't buy that domain (while this may sound like a great combo in real life to some of you weirdos, online... it is not good time). Also, avoid.ru links. Page 13
