1 Uploading and Embedding Your Digital Story (YouTube/Wordpress Version) If you were using digital stories in your classroom, you wouldn't even need to upload the videos to the Internet; you could just watch them on the local computer. For an online class, however, and even for a face-to-face class where you want to share them outside of your classroom, posting your digital story to a blog is something you may wish to do. This tutorial will walk you through the steps involved in posting your digital story to YouTube and embedding that YouTube video into a Wordpress.com blog. Normally, posting to YouTube makes your video available to the world, which is not something you always want to do in an educational setting. To address that, this tutorial will also walk you through steps necessary to conceal your video from the larger YouTube world and make it a bit more private (if not completely private, which is not possible if you want to embed it into a blog). Assumptions of this Tutorial This tutorial assumes that you've already created your digital story, and exported it in a format that you can upload to the Internet. That means the file is either a WMV file that you exported from Photo Story 3, a WMV file you exported from Windows Movie Maker, or a MP4 file you exported from imovie. It's important to note that if you used Photo Story 3, you cannot upload the project file that Photo Story saves (ends in.wp3). You have to export it, at the end of the process, as a WMV file. Also, I am creating this tutorial on my Mac, so things like open and save dialog boxes will look a bit different if you're on Windows, but other than that, all the steps are the same. Go to YouTube Go to YouTube ( and click "Sign In" in the upper right corner of the page. If you've made it this far in EDTC 5310, you do not need to create an account, because you've already have a Google account, and you can use that to sign into YouTube. (Google bought YouTube a few years ago.) Of course, if you've been using YouTube forever and you have an actual YouTube account, you can use that as well. In the upper right corner, you'll see your username. Click on it, to bring up up the account drop down menu and select "My Videos.

2 Sign Into YouTube After clicking "Sign In," you'll be taken to the actual sign-in page, where you can sign in using your Google username and password. Go to the My Videos Page Once you sign in, you'll be taken back to the YouTube home page (which looks a bit different now that you've logged in). In the upper right corner, you'll see your username. Click on it, to bring up up the account drop down menu and select "My Videos." You can actually upload right from the home page (see the "Upload" link) but it's good to know where the My Videos channel is, so you can see your videos after you upload them. 3 A Quick Look at the My Videos & Playlists Page This page shows all the videos you've uploaded to YouTube. Like many of you, I don't have any videos there yet, but your screen may look different if you've uploaded videos in the past. (And if you have, you probably don't need this tutorial!) Drag Your File to the Page This will take you to the Video File Upload page, where you can simply drag your finished digital story to the box shown to start the upload.

The video can't be larger than 2GB or longer than 15 minutes. This should not be a problem for this project (and if you're video is larger or longer than the allowed amounts, it's probably too long).

You can also click the "Upload Video" button to select your file from an Open dialog box, but dragging it is so much cooler! Notice the limitations on the video you can upload (to the right). The video can't be larger than 2GB or longer than 15 minutes. This should not be a problem for this project (and if you're video is larger or longer than the allowed amounts, it's probably too long). Watch Your Video Upload Once you drag and drop your file onto the box, your video will start to upload. Give it some time, but it shouldn't take too long (more or less depending on the current traffic on YouTube). The video will first upload and then it will process. Notice at the top, YouTube already gives you a URL to the video. Don't click on that yet. Let's look Uploading and Embedding Your Digital Story (YouTube/Wordpress Version) - 4

5 farther down on this page. Add Information on Your Video and Set the Privacy Add a title and description for your video that matches the content of your video. You can also add descriptive tags and a category if you wish, but I want to make this video as hard to find as possible so I'm leaving these blank. Also, select the level of privacy you want for your video. The default is to make it public, and you can take that option if you wish, but since this is just for this class, I'm going to up the privacy a bit. Since you want to embed this in your blog, you can't choose the Private option, since that makes it viewable only by you and other YouTube users you allow. This is a good option if you want to share a video with, say, your family, but this option won't work for embedding into a blog. That leaves you with the middle option, Unlisted. Unlisted means that it won't show up in a Google or YouTube search, but it's not completely private. Someone can still find it if they know the URL that goes directly to the video. However, since YouTube URLs have no identifying info in them, it's very difficult (if not near impossible, but not completely impossible) for someone to find the video unless you give them the URL. (Someone could get to it, perhaps, if they randomly typed in a YouTube URL, but that's pretty unlikely). The good thing about the Unlisted setting is that, since you know the direct URL, you can use that to embed it into your blog. 6 Once you do all this, click the "Save Changes" button. When you click this, the info will update but you'll still stay on this page. Grab the URL at This Point if You Want At this point, you can visit the page that contains your video, and we'll do that in a minute. But this page already gives you the URL that you'll need to embed your video into a post on your Wordpress.com blog. Below the last section on this same page is the URL for the video and and embed code. The embed code is useful if you're embedding the video on a blog or wiki other than Wordpress.com, but Wordpress only wants the regular URL, so click in that box to highlight it and then right-click and select "Copy" to copy it to the clipboard. For the Heck of It, Visit Your Videos YouTube Page Just so you can see your video in its full glory, go back to the top of this page and click the direct link to your video. 7 Some Things to Note on the Video's YouTube Page. Below your video, you'll see some info that could prove useful to you. First note that it's telling me that the video is unlisted (if you chose that option). Second, if you click the Share button, you'll see a shortened link to this video that you can give to someone so they can view it on YouTube. Third, if you click the Embed button, you'll see the code needed to embed your video in a blog or wiki or other web page that is not Wordpress. There's other info, of course, including the ubiquitous Facebook and Twitter link buttons. That's good for later, but now (since you've already copied the URL to the clipboard, go to Wordpress.com to embed the video in your blog. 8 Go to Wordpress.com Log into Wordpress.com and create a new post. Type the title and the info in the post text box, and then when you're ready to embed your video, click the tiny video button at the top of the edit window. Paste Your YouTube URL In the Add Video dialog box, click on "From URL" tab, and then paste your URL into the URL box. Finally, click "Insert into Post" at the bottom.
