DAP Overview 3 DAP Overview This document explains how to use Geosoft DAP 11.2 From within DAP-enabled applications Tutorial 1 Through a web browser Tutorial 2 With the use of Dapple Tutorial 3 Note: The operations you must perform to complete a specific tutorial are shown in blue. Geosoft DAP 11.2 Geosoft DAP Server fits into a service-oriented architecture (SOA) and provides the technology for cataloging, managing, delivering and visualizing large, spatial earth science data. With Geosoft DAP Server your data is accessible and easily shared among all the people and teams that need exploration data to make decisions within your organization. This technology effectively overcomes data access and distribution challenges, including insufficient bandwidth for large datasets, format incompatibility, lack of standards, and map projection incompatibilities. Geosoft DAP (referred to further in this tutorial as DAP) makes the search, evaluation, and retrieval of large-volume spatial data more efficient and effective for geoscientists. The DAP publishing service makes spatially located data accessible to virtually any network client, as well as to remote workstations through web browsers or web client applications. The data can also be accessed from a variety of DAP-enabled desktop applications, including Geosoft s Oasis montaj and Oasis montaj Viewer. Geosoft has also developed DAP plug-ins for MapInfo and ArcGIS that enable users to access different Geosoft file formats and download geosciences data from a DAP server. Key Functionality The DAP server enables you to search, preview, and retrieve published spatial data (such as exploration data). It also enables on-the-fly windowing, re-projecting, and re-sampling of the various data formats. Search You can search DAP Servers for relevant spatially located datasets to determine what data is available that matches your area of interest (AOI) using queries based on spatial extent and associated metadata content, including the new structured metadata query. View Results DAP enables data in most spatial formats to be previewed along with any associated metadata. Supported data formats display a rendered image in the client browser map

4 DAP Overview window. Previewing all or a windowed portion of the data enables users to quickly find the data they need. Download Selections Using a supported DAP client, you can retrieve entire sets of spatial data, or windowed parts, at a specified resolution, in multiple formats, and in a required coordinate system. In DAP-enabled applications, the DAP data retrieval service imports the requested data directly into the current project and displays these data in a new or existing map or database. In web applications, the DAP data retrieval service places the resulting data in a ZIP file and passes the URL of that ZIP file back to the requesting application, that will give you the option to download the file to your workstation. Accessing DAP Servers You can access data residing on a DAP server in three ways: From within a DAP-enabled application connected to a network Through a standard web browser With Dapple Note: Third-party developers can use the Geosoft DAP API to build custom data access applications. For details, see the DAP Server Manual, available on the Geosoft web site. Accessing DAP Servers from a DAP-enabled Application A DAP-enabled application is software that has built-in DAP data browsing and download functionality. Geosoft s Oasis montaj, and the freely available Geosoft Oasis montaj Viewer, are examples of DAP-enabled applications. Within these applications, you have access to Seeker, Geosoft's next generation in spatial data retrieval that enables you to search for data stored on global or corporate DAP servers, web servers, and locally from your desktop, using Geosoft's Desktop Cataloger. For more information on Desktop Cataloger, visit In Oasis montaj, this built-in DAP data discovery tool enables you to search for and retrieve data within the context of a map. Wherever possible, data selected for download is automatically windowed to your map boundaries, re-sampled to a resolution appropriate to the map, and re-projected to the coordinate system of the map Geosoft also provides DAP plug-ins for ArcGIS (included with Target for ArcGIS) and MapInfo that can be used to find and retrieve data in the context of your GIS project. Accessing DAP Servers through a Web Browser DAP servers can be accessed directly through a standard web browser. There are some key differences for re-projecting and re-sampling when using this method, but the search and retrieval functionality remains the same.

DAP Overview 5 When using a web browser, you can specify a the download resolution within a given range and then select the image format from a dropdown list. Select Native to download the dataset in its original image format, select Default to download the dataset in its optimal image format given the resolution you have chosen. Note that the downloaded image format may not be the one you selected because the DAP Server uses smart logic to determine the most efficient file format for streaming data over the network. Accessing DAP Servers Using Dapple Dapple is a globe data explorer designed to provide an open and optimal environment for visualizing, presenting, and sharing massive quantities of geoscientific data on desktop computers. Its functionality and design are similar to those of the Google Earth viewer. Dapple enables you to: Display a variety of data formats positioned on a three-dimensional earth surface viewed from a virtual observation point in the space. For a complete list of data formats, refer to Appendix 1: DAP File and Data Types or Geosoft s Supported Data Formats web page. Rotate, pan, zoom, and tilt the 3D Earth image to view your data in the best way Save data views and share them with colleagues Add new Geosoft DAP, WMS and ArcIMS servers of interest Add and create GeoTIFF files Dapple enables you to browse, discover, and display graphically rich data from available global and corporate spatial servers including Geosoft DAP Servers, and from the many WMS and ArcIMS Image Servers. The Dapple project is an open-source activity sponsored by Geosoft and derived from the NASA World Wind open source project.

8 Tutorial 1: Accessing DAP Servers using Seeker Tutorial 1: Accessing DAP Servers using Seeker The DAP server functionality is built into the basic package of Oasis montaj. DAP is also accessible from within Geosoft Oasis montaj Viewer, and from within ArcGIS and MapInfo using free Geosoft plug-ins. The Seeker tool is used to connect to DAP servers from within Oasis montaj. This tutorial describes Seeker and the three easy steps that are used to: 1-Search for relevant data 2-View Results (including metadata and image preview) 3-Retrieve Data directly into your project Seeker Use the Seeker tool to search, view and download data from one or more DAP data servers. Retrieving data has never been easier, with just three easy steps, search, view results and retrieve data. 1 - The Interactive map window displays your current area of interest (AOI), by default the world map is displayed. If you have an open map with a defined coordinate system in your current project, the Seeker tool will automatically search for data that matches the area of interest from your current map the first time Seeker is accessed in a workspace, or you click the Update area of interest from current map extents ( ) button. If you do not have an open map you can still use

Tutorial 1: Accessing DAP Servers using Seeker 9 the Search tools to locate data stored on global or corporate servers, web servers, and locally from your desktop. 2 - The Results step, which displays all the servers Seeker is connected to and all the available datasets, displays this information on easy-to-navigate tabs in tree, list, and thumbnail formats. Note, some servers do not support all navigation tools. Advanced viewing includes Preview Map and Metadata areas. Holding your cursor over a dataset will activate a thumbnail image. The metadata panel will display the metadata of the selected dataset. Checking ( ) data on the Results step will display it in the Preview Map area and add it to your Cart for download. 3 - The Cart step lists all of the data checked for download. Downloaded data is displayed in your current open map or displayed in a new (auto-generated) map (if applicable - i.e. grid or image file). For detailed information about Seeker interface, refer to the Oasis montaj Help system (Help Help Topics) or by clicking the Accessing DAP with Seeker button on the Seeker dialog. On the Seek Data menu there is one option, Seeker. When you initially open the Seeker tool the initial Search extents are based on your current open map (with a defined coordinate system). If you do not have an open map, the area of interest is the whole world. Note: For procedures used to add, enable, and connect to other DAP servers, see the Managing DAP Servers section. ACCESSING DAP TO ACCESS THE DAP INTERFACE FROM AN OASIS MONTAJ PROJECT: 1. Create a project in Oasis montaj. For procedures, see the Oasis montaj online help system. For this tutorial, name the project Alaska.gpf. 2. In your project, create or open a map with a defined coordinate system. For procedure, see the Oasis montaj Help system. In the Alaska project, create an empty map with the following parameters: Minimum X = Minimum Y = Maximum X = Maximum Y = Distance Unit = degree (POSC) Projections parameters Coordinate system = Geographic (lat, long) Datum = WGS 84 Local Datum Transform = [WGS 84] World Map name = Alaska1.map Map Template = landscape letter

10 Tutorial 1: Accessing DAP Servers using Seeker Map Scale = 100 Leave the map open in the current project. 3. From the Seek Data menu, select Seeker. 16 Tutorial 1: Accessing DAP Servers using Seeker 11 The Interactive map window will be updated to your current open map extents (area is enclosed in a red rectangle). 5. Select the Results step to view your search results based on your area of interest. This step displays only those datasets that spatially overlap your map AOI. Searching for Data with Seeker There are several different methods available to define the search criteria for datasets with Seeker: By setting the default DAP Server (which defines the Browser map and Regions menu) By defining the spatial extent of the Area Of interest (AOI) in the Interactive map window By filtering the search results using Metadata Text Search or advanced Structured Metadata Queries SETTING DEFAULT DAP SERVER The Set Default Browser Map and Regions menu enables you to select ( ) your default DAP Server from a list of DAP Servers, and add new DAP Servers to this list. The default DAP Server sets the default browser map (viewed in the Interactive map window) and the area of interest region list, which is displayed in the Regional selection ( ) dropdown list. This can be a very handy list that can include countries, province/state boundaries, or mapsheet/quadrangle names. SEARCING FOR AREA OF INTEREST IN THE INTERACTIVE MAP WINDOW The Interactive map window enables you to view and redefine your area of interest (AOI) using the Navigation tools, Geographic (long, lat) and Regional selection list while you view the changes in your Interactive map window. Navigation Tools You can use the Navigation Tools (zoom-in and -out of, display in full view, load from file, draw area of interest, expand area of interest to viewed area, and update area of interest from current open map extents) to define an approximate area of interest by windowing the map displayed in the Interactive Map window. Refer to the Oasis montaj Help system for further details about these tools.

12 Tutorial 1: Accessing DAP Servers using Seeker Geographic (Long,Lat) The Geographic (long, lat) search enables you to enter exact Geographic (long, lat) coordinate information. To access the AOI lat/long values dialog, double-click while hovering over the long, lat coordinates, displayed in red in the interactive map window. The AOI lat/long values dialog will be displayed. Using the text boxes provided, specify the Geographic (long, lat) values for your AOI. Click the [Set] button, and your AOI will be updated to reflect your changes. Regional Selection List The dropdown Regional Selection List is set via the default DAP Server, see above, and enables you to select a Region to search from a list. The dropdown Regional selection list is accessed from the default DAP Server (see the "Setting Default DAP Server option above). This can be a very handy list that can include countries, province/state boundaries, or mapsheet/quadrangle names. TO WINDOW THE AREA OF INTEREST USING NAVIGATION TOOLS IN THE INTERACTIVE MAP WINDOW: 1. Using the Navigation Tools in the Interactive map window, click the Draw Area of Interest ( ) button. The cursor changes from to. 2. On the map in the Interactive map window, click and hold down the left mouse button on any corner of the area you want to window. 3. Drag the pointer to the opposite corner of the required area, and then release the button. The Interactive map window displays the area you selected. The area within the specified coordinates is displayed in the Interactive map window, occupying the entire map space. The dataset list displayed on the Results page is filtered to those datasets that spatially overlap the specified area. For this tutorial, the selected part of Alaska is displayed in the Interactive map window:

Tutorial 1: Accessing DAP Servers using Seeker 15 The list of available datasets on the Results page is filtered to include the following datasets: TO SELECT A AREA OF INTEREST USING THE REGIONAL SELECTION LIST: 1. Click on the Regional Selection drop-down list. 2. Select a region of interest. The selected region is displayed in the Interactive map window, occupying the entire map space. The region coordinates are displayed in the Minimum and Maximum (X and Y) fields in the Area of Interest pane. The list of available datasets on the Results page is filtered to include only those datasets that spatially overlap the selected region. SEARCH USING METADATA TEXT SEARCH OR STRUCTURED METADATA QUERIES The Text Search box enables you to filter your Search criteria so that only datasets that intersect your AOI and/or contain metadata text that matches a text string will be displayed on the Results step. Use the Text box to add new keywords or to modify keywords already included on the list. You can type in multiple keywords and use wildcards (*) and logical operators (AND, OR, AND NOT). For example, if you select Afghanistan as your region, and enter magnetic as a description keyword, the Results page will display only those datasets that spatially correspond to Afghanistan AND contain the word magnetic in the description of their metadata. For more detailed information click the Help ( ) button on the Seeker dialog.

16 Tutorial 1: Accessing DAP Servers using Seeker TO SEARCH DATA USING METADATA TEXT SEARCH: 1. In the Metadata text box ( ) type your metadata text search string to be used for dataset filtering. Only when searching DAP servers, the search criteria can include one or more words with special characters and simple Boolean operators. The following special characters can be placed in a word:? matches any single character * matches any number of characters ~~ numeric range; for example, 12~~25 matches all numbers between 12 and 25 The following Boolean operators can be placed between operands (words or bracketed words): AND both operands must exist; for example, to search for datasets whose metadata contain both geochemistry and gold, type geochemistry AND gold OR at least one operand must exist; for example, to search for datasets whose metadata contain either geochemistry or gold, type geochemistry OR gold AND NOT the operand must not exist; for example, to search for datasets whose metadata contain geochemistry and does not contain gold, type geochemistry NOT gold You can use brackets to clarify the search sequence. For example: mag* AND (gold OR silver) would find all datasets whose metadata include words that begin with mag, and words gold or silver. Words or sequences with spaces must be enclosed in double quotes. For example: North America. For this tutorial, type magnetic OR gravity. 2. Click the Results step. The dataset list is filtered to include only those datasets that match both the area of interest and search text criteria.

Tutorial 1: Accessing DAP Servers using Seeker 17 For this tutorial, the list on the Results step should include the datasets that pertain to either magnetic or gravity measurements spatially overlapping Alaska: To apply/remove the text search filter, clear the Metadata text box and click the Results step As you apply and remove the area of interest and text search filters, the dataset list changes accordingly. TO SEARCH DATA USING STRUCTURED METADATA QUERY: For advanced metadata query, click the Advanced tab, located on the top-right of the Search step. 1. The Advanced tab enables you to select the Intersection of the Datasets with the Area of Interest as "Overlapping" or "Entirely within".

18 Tutorial 1: Accessing DAP Servers using Seeker 2. The Structured Metadata Query option enables you to design a structured query, using Boolean operators and predefined dropdown lists made available through the selected data source, using the new Query Builder tools. Note that, DAP Server v11.2 supports structured metadata query. 3. Your structured search criteria can be Saved for future use and then Loaded to reapply the same search criteria at a later time. Preview Results in Seeker The Results step on the Seeker tool displays the results of the current search for all your data sources; DAP, WMS and ArcIMS Servers, the Web and your Desktop (see Geosoft's Desktop Cataloger for more information). The Results step enables you to view your search results on easy-to-navigate tabs in Tree view (with folders), List view, and Thumbnail view. Select a data source from the Server Manager menu (DAP, Web, Desktop, WMS, or ArcIMS) to view their results, you will also be presented with the statistics for the number of results found per data source. The Results step includes the Server Manager Menus, Viewing Result tabs, Preview Map window and a Metadata window. SERVER MANAGER MENUS The Server Manager Menus enable you to select the server search results you wish to view ( ).

Tutorial 1: Accessing DAP Servers using Seeker 19 When you select a data source the result statistics, with the number of results found per data source are presented. The statistical results can be found to the right of the file name in Tree view and below the Server Manager menus in List and Thumbnail views. Note: Depending on the data source some views may not be available. When this occurs, you will be notified with an appropriate message. To view DAP or WMS results, select (check ) the data source you wish to view and the selected server results will be displayed. Then, when you switch between views (Tree, List or Thumbnail) you will be viewing the same data source results in each tab view. The Server Manager Menus also provide tools enabling you to manage your data servers with the following options, Refresh, Disable and Remove, along with the ability to add new DAP, WMS or ArcIMS data servers. TO ADD A NEW SERVER: 1. Click the Add Server menu, from either the DAP, WMS or ArcIMS menu (depending on the type of server you want to add). 2. Specify the Server URL ( and click [OK]. 3. The new Server will be added to the appropriate list of servers. VIEWING RESULTS The Viewing Results tabs provide a variety of methods for viewing the search results, Tree View, List View and Thumbnail View. The available views depend on the data source (DAP, Web, Desktop, WMS, and ArcIMS) you are viewing. Checking ( ) a dataset, in any view, will display an image of the dataset in the Preview Map window, display the dataset's metadata in the Metadata window, and add the dataset to the Cart step for download. Note: Not all data sources can be viewed in all views, for example, the Web can not be viewed in Tree view, therefore you must move to List or Thumbnail view to display the Web results. When viewing the results in Tree and List view, if you hover your cursor over a data icon (e.g.,, ) a Viewing Popup window with a Thumbnail image and Metadata link will be displayed. Clicking the "View Metadata" link displays the metadata in the Metadata window.

20 Tutorial 1: Accessing DAP Servers using Seeker PREVIEW MAP The Preview Map window is accessed through the Preview Map tab, located near the topright of the Results step of the Seeker tool. For example, if you window the map to Australia (change the DAP Browser display from A to B), the dataset list on the Results tab changes from C to D. C B D

Tutorial 2: Accessing DAP Servers through a Web Interface 31 Defining Area of Interest on the Search Page There are two ways of defining an area of interest on the Search page: approximately or exactly. To define an area of interest approximately, select a region from the Region dropdown list. To define an area of interest precisely, enter the exact coordinates in the appropriate fields. TO DEFINE AN AREA OF INTEREST APPROXIMATELY 1. From the Region drop-down list, select the required region. 2. Click. The selected region displays in the DAP Browser window, occupying the entire map space. The region coordinates are displayed in the Minimum and Maximum (X and Y) fields. The list of available datasets on the Results tab is filtered to include only those datasets that spatially overlap the selected region. TO DEFINE THE EXACT EXTENT OF YOUR AREA OF INTEREST: 1. Enter the area coordinates in the Minimum and Maximum (X and Y) fields. 2. Click. For this tutorial, enter the following coordinates: Minimum Y = Minimum X = Maximum Y = Maximum X =

32 Tutorial 2: Accessing DAP Servers through a Web Interface The area corresponding to the specified coordinates is displayed in the DAP Browser window, occupying the entire map space. The dataset list displayed on the Results tab is filtered to those datasets that spatially overlap the specified area. For this tutorial, the selected part of Alaska displays in the DAP Browser window: The list of available datasets on the Results tab is filtered to include the following datasets: Filtering Datasets by Metadata You can filter the list of datasets that spatially overlap your area of interest by searching metadata associated with the datasets. TO FILTER DATASETS BY METADATA 1. On the Search tab, use the group of option buttons beneath the Search field to select the search option: All search all metadata associated with the dataset Name search only in the dataset name Description search only in the dataset Description attribute Keywords search only in the dataset Keywords attribute For this tutorial, select All. 2. In the Search field, type keywords to be used for dataset filtering.

Tutorial 2: Accessing DAP Servers through a Web Interface 33 The keyword criteria can include one or more words with special characters and simple Boolean operators. The following special characters can be placed in a word:? matches any single character * matches any number of characters ~~ numeric range; for example, 12~~25 matches all numbers between 12 and 25 The following Boolean operators can be placed between operands (words or bracketed words): AND both operands must exist; for example, to search for datasets whose metadata contain both geochemistry and gold, type geochemistry AND gold OR at least one operand must exist; for example, to search for datasets whose metadata contain either geochemistry or gold, type geochemistry OR gold NOT the operand must not exist; for example, to search for datasets whose metadata contain geochemistry and does not contain gold, type geochemistry NOT gold You can use brackets to clarify the search sequence. For example: mag* AND (gold OR silver) would find all datasets whose metadata include words that begin with mag, and words gold or silver. Words or sequences with spaces must be enclosed in double quotes. For example: North America. For this tutorial, type magnetic OR gravity. 3. Click.

34 Tutorial 2: Accessing DAP Servers through a Web Interface The datasets listed on the Results tab are filtered to include only those datasets that match both the area of interest and search text criteria. For this tutorial, the list on the Results tab should include all datasets that pertain to either magnetic or gravity measurements spatially overlapping Alaska:

Tutorial 2: Accessing DAP Servers through a Web Interface 35 Previewing Relevant Data Once you have sufficiently narrowed down the list of the relevant datasets (displayed on the Results page), you can select those datasets you wish to preview. For each dataset, you can view the graphical rendition of the data as well as its metadata, which is displayed in the Metadata Tool dialog. Depending of the data file type, the rendition might include the dataset content (e.g. grids or images) or only the dataset boundaries and dataset names (e.g. documents). Note: See supported data types in Appendix 1: DAP File and Data Types. Graphical Renditions You can view graphical data of datasets in the DAP Browser window. The datasets can be rendered with or without the map published by the active DAP server, one-by-one or superimposed, with the option to change the rendition order.
