1 ClockBuilder Pro Overview What is Clock Builder Pro? ClockBuilder Pro (CBPro) is Silicon Labs newest generation of timing device configuration & development tools targeted to next generation Si534x and Si538x family of timing devices. CBPro simplifies and streamlines the entire development process from configuration creation to EVB testing to creating orderable part numbers to ordering parts. Basic CBPro Workflow How is Clock Builder Pro used? The basic workflow diagram below shows how CBPro is used. CBPro can be used to help design, test and verify your Si534x and/or Si538x design. Once satisfied with your design, CBPro can then be used to document your design, create an orderable part number, and provide ordering contact information. Basic CBPro Workflow 1. Enter and/or complete your configuration using CBPro 2. Test/Verify your configuration on an Evaluation Board 3. Create Orderable Part Number as needed 4. Receive confirmation with ordering contact information 5. Contact Sales or Distributor to place sample order 6. Receive your custom, pre-programmed samples in about 2 weeks

2 Creating a New Design using CBPro How do I create a new design using CBPro? The starting point for CBPro is the CBPro Wizard page. The CBPro Wizard will step you through all required design inputs page-by-page. You can create your design offline and don t need an EVB during the design process. Designs are saved to project files that use the extension.slabtimeproj. Select Create New Design to start the process.

3 Device selection is shown on the next screen. For this example Clock Generators is selected.

4 The next screen shows the Clock Generator choices. This example selects the Si5340 then clicks Next button to continue.

5 The next screen is where you can enter your unique Design ID and Design Notes information. Enter this information then click Next. Note: Silicon Labs recommends defining a Design ID. This 8-character ASCII identifier is burned to NVM when a custom part is created based on your design, and can aid configuration tracking. It is also written to non-volatile device memory when working with an EVB. The design ID you enter is automatically included in the default name of the design when you later select Save Project.

6 The next screen shows configuration options for the Host Interface. Typically the default selections are used, especially if EVB use is anticipated.

7 The next screen starts the input clock definitions.

8 Note that descriptive help pop-ups are offered when making parameter selections as shown below.

9 As you progress through the design entry and editing process CBPro will: Check your design for any errors Check for any conditions that may lead to sub-optimal operation and flag them as warnings Calculate a frequency plan for the reference, input, and output clocks you have defined Estimate device current draw and junction temperature for your design A status of all of the above is shown by three widgets in the bottom left corner of CBPro. All of the widgets can be clicked to get additional information. If you start a design but need to finish at a later date, don t worry, you can click the Finish button, save your design to a project file, and pick up later.

10 Once finished with a CBPro validated design entry, the following screen is shown. You can save the design for later use, or go back and edit. If an EVB is installed, it will be recognized and you could download your design to an EVB.

11 Loading a Configuration into an EVB using CBPro 1. Connect EVB to PC via USB cable Output Clocks Output Clocks Output Clocks Input Clocks USB cable 2. Launch CBPro

12 3. Ensure your EVB is detected after CBPro startup (Si5345 EVB used in this example)

13 4. Open your CBPRo configuration Design Project File by Clicking on Open Design Project File 5. Then select your configuration file and click Open

14 6. Select Yes to write design to EVB

15 7. The device on EVB should now be operating according to your configuration s settings if loaded frequency plan is valid.
