2 Step 1 Creating File Content Files in D2L are containers for any content you wish to put them. This can include text with images, videos, links, etc. From the New button choose Create a file. If in Course Builder drag the "Create an HTML File" to a module. The file editor window appears, you have access to many text-editor type tools here along with some media tools: Insert Stuff, this allows you to insert all types of media into your page including YouTube Videos, Capture Recordings, Flickr Images, Content from other sites offering an embed code. etc Image Tool, allows you to quickly upload a picture and insert it into your document. Link Tool, allows you to turn selected text into a link to a webpage or other resource or create a new link that is inserted into your document. Formula Tool, allows you to create mathematical formulas. You have various editor options here. You aren't limited to just one type of content within a File object, you can arrange text, images and videos just like you would in something like Microsoft Word guides.parklandcollege.sk.ca/ Page 2 of 6

3 Step 2 Text Editing Tips The file content type gives you access to many of the same tools as a word processor. The general operation is just like a text editor where you type text, select it and format it to your liking. Your standard editing styles are there such as bold, italic underline, headings/paragraph, lists, tables, etc. Here are some others which are a little "hidden": Clicking the arrow beside the Bold, Italics, Underline buttons gives you Strikethrough, Superscript and Subscript formatting options. Clicking the arrow beside the link button gives you access to symbols, a horizontal line and an insert attributes tool (for HTML classes). You will find additional list types, alignment and text direction options beside the list button. There is also a table tool. 4 Step 3 Adding a YouTube Video From a new or existing file content type choose the Insert Stuff button. The Insert Stuff dialog appears, as you can see, there are a number of things you can insert. Choose the YouTube option to bring up the YouTube search box. You can perform searches on YouTube and Flickr within Insert Stuff so you don't have to leave D2L and copy/paste things. A list of search results will appear. Click on the desired video and click the next button to proceed. 5 Step 4 Adding a Flickr Image Flickr offers many free images for use within your course. If you don't have an image to use use the Flickr image search to find what you are looking for. Click on the Insert Stuff tool to access the Flickr Image search tool. Click on Flickr in the left column and search for the image you want. Choose the image and choose Next. In the next step you will be presented with some options. This allows you to set custom dimensions and an option to insert the image rights along with the image (a good idea). After you have set what you need click the Insert button to add it to your document. You may start finding that the content window becomes too small when working with more and more content. 6 Step 5 Adding an Image from your Computer If you have already found the images you need you can add them to your course via the image upload tool. Click on the Insert Image button. You will be presented with some source options. If you want to add an image from your computer choose My Computer and then either drag an image to the upload area or click the Upload button and choose the image. Once the upload completes click the Add button. You will be prompted to enter alternate text (this is required). This is the text that shows if the image doesn't load You also have the option of adding images from already uploaded images found in either your course or shared with all D2L members or directly from a website (URL). A word of caution when using URL linked images. If the website removes the image at the URL you will lose the image.
