2 AGENDA AODA: An Overview WCAG 2.0 & Success Criteria at a Glance Take an existing PDF which was not formatted for accessibility and see what it takes to remediate it into a fully accessible document for people with visual and mobility impairments. Review, Q&A

3 Section #14 of IASR ACCESSIBLE WEBSITES AND WEB CONTENT The solution must conform with the international Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0, as outlined in the below schedule. The Government of Ontario and the Legislative Assembly, for both their internet and intranet sites, shall meet the requirements in this section in accordance with the following schedule: By January 1, 2012: New internet and intranet websites and web content on those sites must conform to WCAG 2.0 Level AA, other than: Success criteria Captions (Live), and Success criteria Audio Descriptions (Pre-recorded). By January 1, 2016: All internet websites and web content must conform to WCAG 2.0 Level AA other than: Success criteria Captions (Live), and Success criteria Audio Descriptions (Pre-recorded). By January 1, 2020: All internet and intranet websites and web content must conform to WCAG 2.0 Level AA.

4 WEB CONTENT ACCESSIBILITY GUIDELINES (WCAG) 2.0 What does conformance mean? Conformance to a standard means that you meet or satisfy the 'requirements' of the standard. In WCAG 2.0 the 'requirements' are the Success Criteria.

6 The Experience Screen Readers receives data from the operating system and the browser through an application program interface (API) and then pass along information, such as page layout, text attributes, and the location of interactive controls and form fields, to the user.

10 Accessibility Tools Within Adobe Acrobat, the following tools, panes and views are employed when creating an accessible document. Tool Content Pane Tags Pane Order Pane Show Page Content Order Edit Object\TouchUp Object Purpose Displays the document s content and its associated tags structure. Reveals the document s tags tree and the properties associated with the tags. Displays the document s reading/reflow order. Displays the document s Reading Order/Reflow, identifies images as having or not having alternative text and reveals if a table is tagged as a table. Reveals alternative text associated with images. Table Editor Form Editor Accessibility Full Check Displays table tags and tags properties. Reveals form field s tooltips via Properties and displays the form s Tab Order. Adobe s automated accessibility checker. Note: This is not a true WCAG testing tool and must be used in conjunction with a manual test.

16 IMPLEMENTATION: 3 IMPORTANT PANELS Panels Content panel Tags panel Order panel Warning There is no undo for changes you make Save your file often Save with different names so you can go back to a copy of the file if something gets corrupted If the structure gets corrupted you may need to use a tool such as AxesPDF QuickFix or CommonLook to fix.

17 CONTENT PANEL Represents the content stream and semantic roles from the native document Order represents the stacking order (z-order of content) Changing order may hide something visually Deleting from the content panel will delete from the document Avoid or be very careful with this panel Content Panel

18 TAGS PANEL Reading order used by AT Does not change order in content panel Changes in Tags panel do not affect visual document Advanced tag types (list, link, note, reference) Provides flexibility to structure tags Find unmarked content/annotations Set actual text for symbols, formulas, etc. Keystroke support for quick nav

25 Testing your PDFs There are several options for how to test your PDF files for accessibility. Acrobat Accessibility Checker PAC 2.0 Checker And there are standards in development such as WCAG 2.0 and PDF/UA for determining when a file is valid.
