Grove Art Online Site Demonstration About this walk-through demonstration Screenshots are used throughout this walk-through to illustrate the features under discussion. A caption appears with each screenshot pointing out items of interest. Features of the site are highlighted in bold text (e.g., Advanced search), while commands appear in Courier bold (e.g., Go To). This demonstration is also available in HTML from
Introduction Grove Art Online contains the full-text of The Dictionary of Art (ed. Jane Turner, 1996) the landmark encyclopedia of world art from prehistory to the present in over 45,000 articles. Since its launch in 1998, Grove Art Online has added over 700 new articles and over 5,500 updated articles. Grove Art Online also includes all 2,800 articles from The Oxford Companion to Western Art [OCWA] (ed. Hugh Brigstocke, 2001) and continues to offer new content and revisions on a quarterly basis. Grove Art Online offers over 1500 colour images and line drawings; links to the Art Resource searchable image database; and links to over 40,000 images on museum and gallery websites. For copyright reasons, Grove Art Online cannot publish all of the images in the print edition online. Home page If you're not already logged in to Grove Art Online, enter you username and password details and click Enter or hit return to access the site. Grove Art Online home page. Enter your username and password details. Welcome page On the welcome page you'll find five methods of finding material in Grove Art Online: Search Advanced Search Image Search Browse Explore These options also appear at top-right of every page on the site, in the navigation bar. Also available from the home page, is a link to Grove Art Online's Image links. 2 Grove Art Online Demonstration
Welcome page showing Search, Advanced Search, Image Search, Browse, and Explore. Search The Search box is located at the top-right of every screen. This searches article headwords first and will then perform a full text search if no headword matches are found. To try out the search feature, type 'cubism' into the search box at the top-right of the screen and click Go or hit return. As the search results come up, you'll see that 'cubism' is the first result, 'Cubism [from OCWA]' is the second result, and 'Czech Cubism' is the last result. Underneath the article headword, the results display a brief introductory sentence to the article. Results showing 'Cubism' article as the first result. Click on the first result to go to the 'Cubism' article. Article view The opening page for each article presents the overall structure of the article with the main contents of the article displayed in the central area of the screen. This is especially useful for longer articles. A more detailed table of contents appears in the shaded area on the left, showing all headings in the article; for longer articles a scroll bar appears alongside the table of contents. The white triangles near the top-right of the screen allow you to navigate through the pages of the article, choosing previous and next pages. Remember, if you're on the opening page of an article, the previous button will take you to the last page of the previous article. 3 Grove Art Online Demonstration
As we arrived at this article using the search, an extra navigation bar appears at the bottom of the screen allowing you to navigate to previous and next search results. Note also that 'Cubism' appears in red as it is a highlighted search term. Article view showing table of contents, previous and next navigation buttons, and search navigation. Table of contents The table of contents on the left allows you to click directly to any section of the article that may be of special interest, including the bibliography for the article. For instance, if we are interested in stylistic innovations of Cubism we can simply click to the 'Technical and stylistic innovations' heading under 'Painting, sculpture and collage'. At the top of the article view screen you'll see a header, or breadcrumb trail: 'Cubism, I: Painting, sculpture and collage' that indicates where you are in the article the Cubism article, in the first section called 'Painting, sculpture and collage', in the third part of that section, 'Technical and Stylistic innovation'. This all corresponds to the table of contents down the left hand side of the screen. Using the table of contents to navigate the article generates a breadcrumb trail, indicating where in the article you are. Cross-references Grove Art Online is extensively cross-referenced. Scroll down the page until you reach the paragraph beginning 'Later inventions in Cubism arose...' and note the text highlighted in green: 'collage'. Clicking the text links you straight to the 'Collage' article. 4 Grove Art Online Demonstration
The text highlighted in green, 'collage', links you straight to the article on collage. Using the back button of your browser, return to the Cubism article. Abbreviations Abbreviations are used throughout Grove Art, especially in bibliographies. For users not familiar with the abbreviations, the site has a feature that makes it easy to translate abbreviations. Using the table of contents, click on the bibliography for the Cubism article and scroll down to the 'Le Cubisme' entry under exhibition catalogues. Notice the reference to 'Paris, Mus. Picasso'. Copy 'Paris, Mus. Picasso' and paste it into the Find Abbrevs box near the right of the grey navigation bar at the top of the screen. Click Find Abbrevs or hit return. The definition of the abbreviation appears in the shaded area on the left of the screen. Definitions appear in the shaded area on the left of the screen. Click Back to table of contents to return to the article contents. Article navigation Using the quick search function in the top-right of the screen, open the Pablo Picasso article. Each article has a dark grey navigation bar running across the top of the page with links to related material. Options available include: Article Image Links Illustrations 5 Grove Art Online Demonstration
Related articles Article search Article navigation at the top of the page provides links to image links, illustrations, and related articles, and allows searching within an article. Image Links Click the Image Links button to open the Image Links tab. This tab provides a link to the Art Resource image database, which you can use to search for images, and links to related images on museum and gallery websites that have been editorially selected for their relevance to the article. Grove Art Online provides links to over 40,000 images held by museums and galleries around the world. Links are carefully selected by the Grove editorial staff. Click on 'Portrait of a Young Woman after Cranach the Younger' from the Kupferstichkabinett in Berlin. Notice how a new window opens to display the image. 6 Grove Art Online Demonstration
The linked image opens in a new browser window. Close any browser windows associated with external links. Illustrations Use the quick search to open the article on Sandro Botticelli and click the Illustrations button to open the Illustration tab. This tab provides a list of images within the online resource, not links to images which are located on external websites. Click on the thumbnails and captions to view larger versions of the images. These illustrations are also available from within the text of the article as hyperlinked thumbnail images. The Illustrations page lists the article's images. 7 Grove Art Online Demonstration
Images are also available in the text of the article. Related articles This feature provides links to a wide range of articles in Grove Art Online, allowing you to explore and broaden your research and experience on the site. Related articles is driven by the site's award-winning index and grouped under relevant subheadings. The index itself is fully browse-able, but more on that later. Let's go back to the Cubism article. Related articles are grouped under relevant subheadings. After exploring the breadth of links available from Related Articles, scroll back to the top of the list and click the link to the Picasso article, 'Picasso, Pablo, I, 2(iv): Primitivism and Cubism, : Papiers collés and Synthetic Cubism'. We're now in the Picasso article and we've been brought to the section that discusses Cubism. Notice the very extensive table of contents down the left hand side of the page. As you scroll up the contents list, you'll see how the section we are in is highlighted in green. Scroll to the bottom of the contents and note the extensive bibliography. Scroll to the top of the contents and click 'Picasso, Pablo' to go to the first page of the article. Click the Image links button in the article navigation bar. Article search This feature enables you to search within the article you are currently viewing. It is particularly useful when viewing longer articles. For example, to locate the discussions of classicism in the Picasso article, click the Article Search button in the article navigation bar, type 'classicism' into the box and click OK. All mentions of 'classicism' in the Picasso article are displayed as search results. 8 Grove Art Online Demonstration
Article search allows you to restrict your search just to the article you are currently viewing. Site navigation We mentioned earlier the site navigation bar that features on every page of Grove Art Online in the top right of the screen, giving you access to Advanced Search and Browse. We'll now look at these in a little more detail. Site navigation appears on every page in the top right of the screen. Advanced Search Advanced Search provides several options for exploring the content of Grove Art Online. The default advanced option is Full text search Full text search This allows you to search across the full text of Grove Art Online, and provides concept, pattern, and boolean options to pinpoint the term (or terms) you are looking for, as well as the ability to search only specific content 'types', for example, links or biographies. 9 Grove Art Online Demonstration
Click the 'Advanced Search' button in the site navigation bar for detailed search options. It's always useful to experiment with the different types of search. Notice that concept is the default search mode this uses a thesaurus to match commonly used search terms against what we expect you are interested in. For example, enter 'primitivism' in the search box and click search. The primivitism article is the first result, but our thesaurus finds similar words, such as the article on the group of French artists, Les Primitifs. Open Les Primitifs article and note the colours used to highlight the term you searched for. When viewing an article from the search results screen, your search terms are highlighted. Now let's say we want to look at performance art. Go back to the default advanced search page, and enter 'performance art' in the search box. Again, concept searching is our default and we get the maximum number of results that Grove Art Online will display, 500 too many to scroll through. So let's refine the search to look at Andy Warhol's involvement with performance art. Click the back button to go back to the search page. Change the search to 'performance art AND andy warhol' and select the boolean search option. Our search has now been refined to 14 results. Open result 9 and note the search-results navigation bar at the bottom of the screen. This allows you to navigate between previous and next search results, and return to the full list at any time. This appears whenever you open an article from a search results page. 10 Grove Art Online Demonstration
When viewing an article text search result, a search-results navigation bar appears at the bottom of the screen. Wild card and fuzzy searches are also available. Go back to the advanced search page and click on Help at the top of the page for more information on search options. The help notes on the site are context-sensitive and will take you to the section most relevant to where you are on the site: if you are in the search function, you'll be taken to the search section. Clicking 'Help' in the site navigation bar is context-sensitive. Click the back button of your browser to return to the advanced search page. Other search options are available from the search navigation bar near the top of the page. Options are described briefly below. 11 Grove Art Online Demonstration
The advanced search navigation bar offers options to search specific content 'types'. Bibliographies This allows researchers to limit their searches to the bibliographies of the site. Bibliographies are also searchable as part of the Full text search, but of course if users are specifically interested in a bibliographic citation, this is a much more powerful search option. Biographies This is an excellent tool for specific searches or as a fun way for non-specialists to search through Grove Art Online. By typing in 'New York' in the birth place and 'architect' in the occupation, for example, your search results will list the 19 architects born in New York with an entry in Grove Art Online. Contributors This allows you to find the entries written by specific authors in Grove Art Online. A great way to follow the work of a favourite writer on the many subjects covered. Captions This feature searches the captions as they appeared in The Dictionary of Art and is a useful way to find images in the print edition. Image Search Grove Art Online offers a number of options for searching for art images. Art Image Links This page allows you to look for images among the 45,000+ links in the Grove Art Online links database. We can search the links by artist's name, and title, date, or location of the work. For instance, if we wanted to explore 'self-portraits', we simply type that in the 'title' box and run the search to see the wide range of artists who painted self-portraits. Or type 'waterlilies' to see where Monet's Waterlilies and other artists' waterlilies can be found. Notice the various options in the pull-down from Select Link Type. Art Image Collections This page allows you to survey a list of illustrated articles in Grove Art Online or to search art image collections through the Art Resource and Bridgeman Art Library database. If you select Illustrated Articles, it will display a list of all the colour images displayed in Grove Art Online articles. For example, if you wanted to see any of the images for Aboriginal Australia, you may click on the title of the work, Bark painting, Yirkalla, northeast Arnhem Land, and go directly to this image in the article. You may click on any thumbnail image to enlarge the image. 12 Grove Art Online Demonstration
The Illustrations Articles page lists all the colour images displayed in Grove Art Online articles. Images display in the text; clicking the image opens a larger version. Browse A Z Browse Click the Browse button in the site navigation bar to look at the browsing options available. Browse allows you to navigate through alphabetized lists of article headwords, authors, abbreviations, and the index. Use the Go To feature in the browse navigation bar to quickly navigate through the list: say you're interested in the photographer, Brassaï, then enter 'bras' inthe box and click Go To. You are taken to the first entry in the list that begins 'bras' Brascassat, Jacques-Raymond. Brassaï appears in the list not far below. 13 Grove Art Online Demonstration
The default Browse screen is a full A Z list of headwords. Note the 'Go To' box that appears on all Browse pages. A Z Index The Index is particularly interesting as it allows you to broaden your explorations and discover things you might not think to look for. Click the Index button in browse navigation bar, enter 'picas' in the Go To box and hit return. You are taken to the index entry for Picasso. The cross mark next to his name indicates that there are several items for this entry. Index entries with a cross to the left contain further subdivisions. Click the cross to view them. Click the cross to identify these options, which show the wide range of articles in which Picasso features. Click on go to the right of the 'book illustration' entry to read about Picasso's involvement in illustration work. 14 Grove Art Online Demonstration
Picasso features in a wide range of articles. Context sensitivity From article view, the Browse button in the site navigation bar is context-sensitive. Clicking it while in the the 'book illustration' article takes you to where the article appears in the A Z headword list. From here you can easily navigate to articles on books, bookbinding, book covers, book jackets, and more. Browse is context-sensitive and jumps to the place where the headword of the article you're viewing appears. Explore This feature enables you to search by major subjects in the visual arts. The subjects are organized into five main categories: Art and Art Forms; Geography; People; Styles and Cultures; Time Periods. You may make any combination of selections from the subcategories in the five main categories. For example, to view articles in Grove Art Online related to French architecture, you may select: Art and Art Forms > Architecture and Geography > Europe > France 15 Grove Art Online Demonstration
Articles relating to French architecture appear in the right-hand column. Log out If you have finished experiencing Grove Art Online, end your session by clicking the Log Out button in the site navigation bar. 16 Grove Art Online Demonstration
