2 This guide provides a basic introduction to MetSearch, Cardiff Metropolitan University s new library management system. MetSearch is a dynamic system and this guide will be developed according to user testing and to reflect changes that the supplier makes to the system. You may repurpose its content for your own training sessions and you are welcome to make recommendations for its improvement. 2

4 What Is MetSearch? MetSearch is Cardiff Met s library management system. You can find electronic and print material and manage your library account from one system. Use MetSearch to: Search and access Cardiff Met s print and electronic collections Place reservations, view your current loans and renew items Search DSpace, Cardiff Met s institutional repository Place interlibrary loan requests How Do I Access MetSearch? Direct Links The direct links to access MetSearch are: English language version: Welsh language version: Via Other Services You can also access MetSearch from anywhere you used to be able to access Summon: Study Portal: (click on Library Services) The Student Room: The Staff Room: Moodle: MyCardiffMet app: TIP: Make sure you sign in to MetSearch to search all of the collections and to manage your account

5 Signing in to MetSearch Why Should I Sign in to MetSearch? You need to sign into MetSearch to do the following: Search all of our collections: some content can only be searched by Cardiff Met users so signing in will ensure that you are searching everything in MetSearch; Manage your account: including placing reservations, renewing your books and requesting interlibrary loans when Cardiff Met does not hold the item you need; Save your favourites: you can save your searches and place items on your e-shelf to read later. You can also export the contents of your e-shelf to bibliographic software such as EndNote. How Do I Sign in to MetSearch? On Campus 1. Navigate to MetSearch and click Sign in, in the top right corner of the screen: 2. Click the Cardiff Met Users (Students & Staff) link: you will be automatically authenticated 3. On campus, you will be automatically authenticated and you should see your name appear instead of the word Guest: 5

6 Off Campus 1. Navigate to MetSearch and click Sign in, in the top right corner of the screen: 2. Click the Cardiff Met Users (Students & Staff) link: 3. If you haven t already logged in to a Cardiff Met resource, you will be asked to enter your username and password: 6

4. Enter your network login details: the username and password you use to log in to computers on campus and to log in to your Cardiff Met email account.

Searching Cardiff Met s Collections in MetSearch Filtering Your Search You can, of course, simply enter your search terms, hit enter and search everything in MetSearch.

8 Searching Cardiff Met s Collections in MetSearch Filtering Your Search You can, of course, simply enter your search terms, hit enter and search everything in MetSearch. There are, however, ways to make your search more specific before you hit the enter button. Use the drop down list next to the search box to: Search everything: the default option, this searches everything in MetSearch; Search the library catalogue: this restricts your search to the library catalogue, including print books and journals and DVDs. Use this option if you are looking for print material; Search articles: this restricts your search to journal articles, newspaper articles, conference proceedings and more. Use this options if you are looking for electronic material; Search DSpace: this restricts your search to Cardiff Met s institutional repository, DSpace. Use this option to find theses and dissertations and search the University s research output. Refining Your Search Results Once you have entered your search terms, use the options on the left of the screen (facets) to refine your results: 8

Once you have entered your search terms, you can limit your results to electronic material by selecting the Online Access facet on the left of the screen and you can limit your results to print material by selecting the Available in the Library facet. You can also restrict your search to Peerreviewed Journals: Electronic Records Electronic records are indicated by an Online access label and feature a View tab: Click the View tab and click one of the full text provider links to access 9

10 Print Records Print or physical item records are indicated by an Available at label and feature a Get It tab: Click the Get It tab to see how many copies we have and their loan status TIP: if we have a title in print and electronic format, you will see both a View and Get It tab How Do I Find Databases? The articles contained within most of our subscription databases can be searched and accessed via MetSearch. The database titles, however, are not currently searchable. If you want to find a specific database and search directly within that database s interface, you can find all our databases via the Database A-Z ( The Database A-Z link can also be found on any page of MetSearch: How Do I Reserve an Item? You need to be signed in to place a reservation. When you are signed in, find the print item you want to reserve and click on the Get it tab. If the item policy allows users to place a reservation on the item, you will see a Cardiff Met button: 10

Click the Reserve @ Cardiff Met button and select whether you would like to collect the item from the Cyncoed or Llandaff library. You will receive an email when the item is ready to be collected.

How Do I Place an Interlibrary Loan Request in MetSearch? The Document Delivery Service assists Cardiff Metropolitan staff and students to access materials which are not held at Cardiff Met. Most information about document delivery, interlibrary loans and digitisation can be found on the Study portal ( under Document Delivery: If Cardiff Met libraries don t have the item you are looking for, you may be to place an interlibrary loan request to borrow the item from another institution. You need to be signed in to place an interlibrary loan request. Once you are signed in, click on Interlibrary Loans from any page in MetSearch: 11

You will be taken to a form where you will need to enter the details of the book or article you wish to request (to speed up your request, give as much detail as possible, without abbreviations),

You will be able to see the status of your request in My Account (see section on My Account below). My Account in MetSearch What Can I Do in My Account? Use My Account to: View your current loans and loan history; See the status of any reservations you have placed; See the status of your interlibrary loan requests; View your fines (unfortunately, you will not be able to pay your fines online. This service will be made available again soon, but while we are getting things set up with the new system it will remain out of action. In the meantime, you can visit a helpdesk to pay any fines owed or contact us ( and pay over the phone. How Do I Access My Account? You need to be signed in to access My Account. You can find the My Account link in the top right corner of any screen in MetSearch (if you haven t already signed in, you will be prompted to do so): 12

Saving and Managing Favourites in Your e-shelf What Is the e-shelf? When you are signed in, MetSearch allows you to save your favourite items in your e-shelf.

13 Saving and Managing Favourites in Your e-shelf What Is the e-shelf? When you are signed in, MetSearch allows you to save your favourite items in your e-shelf. When you add an item to your e-shelf, it gets placed in your Basket. You can then create folders to organise your items e.g. by assignment name. You can also export some or all of the contents of your folders to bibliographic software such as EndNote to help with referencing. How Do I Add Items to My e-shelf? Simply click on the star icon next to an item you want to add to your e-shelf. It will change colour from white to orange and it will be added to your Basket in your e-shelf: Click the star icon next to the title How Do I Access My e-shelf? You need to be signed in to access your e-shelf. You can find the e-shelf link in the top right corner of any screen in MetSearch (if you have not already signed in, you will be prompted to do so): 13

14 Do you Need Help with MetSearch? MetSearch features an Online Help service which includes tips on searching, and using the e-shelf.
