2 JSTOR's mission is to help the scholarly community take advantage of advances in information technologies. JSTOR is a not-for-profit organization with a dual mission to create and maintain a trusted archive of important scholarly journals, and to provide access to these journals as widely as possible. JSTOR offers researchers the ability to retrieve high resolution, scanned images of journal issues and pages as they were originally designed, printed, and illustrated. JSTOR began as an effort to ease the increasing problems faced by libraries seeking to provide adequate stack space for the long runs of backfiles of scholarly journals.

3 JSTOR offers both multidisciplinary and discipline-specific collections. These options are designed to provide flexibility for libraries and institutions to choose the sets of journals and collection growth paths that are most appropriate for their needs. IHC Library has an access to Developing Nations Access Initiative. This includes more than 20 archival journal collections (includes a backfile of more than 2,300 archived journals), as well as JSTOR's four primary source collections (includes more than 2 million primary source objects) The archival journals package for Tier 3 institutions contains the collections listed below: Art & Sciences I XII Life Sciences Ireland Ecology & Botany II Primary Sources: More than two million primary sources across four collections, supporting research and teaching in the humanities, social sciences, and sciences Global Plants 19th-Century British Pamphlets Struggles for Freedom: Southern Africa World Heritage Sites: Africa

5 How to use JSTOR? Searching: Enter search terms in the basic search interface to search all content in all disciplines. Use the advanced search interface to narrow your search to specific publication dates, journals, authors, or many other search options. Browsing: Find journal issues and articles by clicking on "Browse," and then the name, volume and issue of the journal that interests you. Article Locator: Select the "Article Locator" to enter citation information about a specific article you are looking for. 7 Basic Search Tips Try these tips for a more effective Basic search: Place words within quotation marks to search for exact phrases: to be or not to be customer relationship management Use Boolean operators to construct a better search: tea trade AND smuggling microfinance OR microcredit united states NOT united kingdom Use field codes to search for titles and authors quickly: To search for an article titles - ti: Non-Cooperative Games To search for an author au: Albert Einstein

9 The Advanced Search form is especially useful when you want to target a search to a type of content or to a specific discipline.» Construct a more complex query by adding more search fields.» Use the drop-down boxes to limit search terms to the title, author, abstract, or caption text.» Use the Narrow by options to search only articles, include/exclude book reviews, search for content published during a particular time frame, or in a particular language.» Focus your search in specific disciplines and titles using checkboxes.

10 The search results pages offer many features for sorting and reviewing search results.» Use the tabs at the top of the search results list to filter results to a specific type of content (journals, books, pamphlets).» Use the sorting options to view search results by relevance, oldest items, or newest items. Use the Display option to view more results on a single page.» By default, all search results are for content licensed or purchased by the host institution. Researchers may choose to see results for all content on JSTOR by changing the Show option to All Content. Researchers may access the full-text of an item from the search results page.» Click on an item title to go directly to the full text of the item.» Choose Article PDF to immediately obtain a copy of the article for downloading.
