1 Research Guide: Finding Journal Articles Journals have the most up to date information and the most current research on any given subject. To find articles and journals on a particular subject, architect, building or theoretical concept for example, there are a number of tools which are described below. If you have any problems finding and accessing journals, contact the library staff at library@aaschool.ac.uk Index databases and full-text online journals can be accessed outside the AA via Athens/Institution login using an AA username and password. This service is only available to the school and subscribing members. Please see the Online resources guide for more information on how to login. Step 1: Searching for articles The AA Library subscribes to a variety of online resources including databases where 1000s of journals are indexed with extensive full-text coverage. Please visit the AA Collections catalogue for lists of available resources and their links at collections.aaschool.ac.uk RIBA Library catalogue The RIBA Library catalogue is open access and can be used to find journal article references and is especially useful for British architecture. Simply begin by typing a subject in the quick search; using any combination of terms using AND, OR, NOT operators to get the best results.

3 EBSCOhost: Avery Index to Architectural Periodicals and Art Full Text Avery Index is a bibliographical database produced by Columbia University which indexes and abstracts articles from over 2500 journals concerned with architecture, design and related subjects. Art Full Text contains abstracts and indexing of 552 periodicals from 1984 onwards, abstracts for every article indexed, and the full text of articles from 252 journals dating from Type keywords to begin a search ignoring extra options if not required. To search for a subject or author in a specific journal enter the journal title and change the search field to SO Source as illustrated below:

4 Click on the search result title for additional details such as abstract and keywords and once again note the reference of the article. These can be printed or ed from the EBSCOhost platform. Articles which are available as Full Text can be opened, read online, ed or printed directly from the EBSCOhost platform. Those articles have HTML and/or PDF icons. Using Boolean Operators TIP: ADVANCED SEARCHING TECHNIQUES Boolean operators can be used in order to reduce or expand the number of search results. The function of each operator is explained in the following table: Operator What they do Example AND OR Narrows a search including a combination of terms Widens the search to include either terms or both terms (note: using a comma gives similar results) shelter AND Buckminster shelter OR temporary housing NOT Searches a term while including another shelter NOT housing In addition, these operators can be used with parentheses ( ) for a more effective search. This determines the order in which the database conducts the search; terms placed within the parentheses ( ) will be searched first and terms outside will be searched next. For example: (lighting OR ventilation) AND sustainable design Step 2: Locating journal articles

5 Once article references are found, check if the journal is available in print or online from the AA Library. Return to collections.aaschool.ac.uk and search for the journal title. For example the search result above: AA Files, Autumn 98, Issue 37, p AA Files is available online from JSTOR Click on the Journal title to see the location of print issues; different years of a journal can be held in different locations. For example recent years will be kept in the library and older issues are located in the journal store, the latter would have to be requested from the store in advance.

6 Ordering journal articles not in the collection: interlibrary loans When journals are not available at the AA Library, either in print or online, journal articles can be ordered via interlibrary loan by filling out a form via the collections.aaschool.ac.uk catalogue. Making a request on the collections catalogue Use the Send a request link in the rop right hand corner to access the form. Enter your AA username and password when prompted to login to your account. Change the request type and fill in as many details as possible. Click submit to finish. The status of your request will be updated in MY ACCOUNT > REQUESTS tab..
