Boolean operators 0 Boolean operators secretly rule the world of information! 0 You use them everyday, but may not know it. 0 Google defaults to a Boolean operator. 0 With a good grasp of Boolean operators, you can conquer any database.
Boolean operator and 0 The and operator will narrow your search by joining ideas together. 0 Example: 0 Poverty and Children 0 To be retrieved, an item must contain the word poverty as- well- as children. 0 Google defaults to an and Boolean search. 0 If you typed Briar Cliff University into Google, you are searching 0 Briar and Cliff and University
Boolean operator and A AB B Result of the search A AND B = AB
Boolean operator or 0 The or operator will broaden your search by searching for this or that. 0 Example: 0 Poverty or impoverished 0 This will bring back results that contain the word poverty or the word impoverished it must contain one or the other. 0 This is extremely useful if you are having trouble Vinding results.
Boolean operator or A AB B Result of the search A OR B = A, AB, B
Boolean operator not 0 The not operator will narrow your search by excluding terms. 0 Example: 0 Poverty not Urban 0 This will bring back results that contain the word poverty and leave out anything containing the word urban. 0 Hint: use a not search if you are retrieving too many hits. 0 Additional hint: use the minus symbol in Google for a not search.
Boolean operator not A AB B Result of the search A NOT B = A
Phrase searching 0 Phrase searching will focus your search. 0 By placing a string of words into quotation marks, the database will search for that exact phrase 0 Example: 0 Briar Cliff University 0 To be retrieved, the item must contain those three words, in that exact order.
Put it together 0 Can you give a search string that contains a Boolean operator and phrase search?
Put it together 0 Can you give a search string that contains a Boolean operator and phrase search? 0 Briar Cliff University and Library

Finding Sources 0 You can access article databases and ebooks from the library s website. 0 Using Boolean operators, phrase searching and other advanced searching features will help you make the most of your time. 0
