2 EBSCOhost is an online database that indexes periodical titles with an emphasis on peer-reviewed journals, as well as newspapers and conference papers. Much of the collection is available in full text. EBSCOhost includes 23 individual databases that can be searched simultaneously or individually. 1. Accessing EBSCOhost LEARN >> Databases >> >> >> 2. Why Choose EBSCOhost? Access to many full text articles the database will deliver articles to your desktop. Access to peer reviewed professional articles as well as popular magazine articles. The 23 databases cover a variety of subject areas (see the databases listed below). All 23 databases can be searched individually or simultaneously. Allows searching for images and maps. 3. 3 4. Searching EBSCOhost 4.1 Advanced Keyword Search Advanced Keyword Search is the default search you get this search option as soon as you hit the Connect button when accessing EBSCOhost. Use Boolean operators to connect keywords in each search box. Use truncation signs to search for all possible word endings Boolean Operators and Truncation Signs in EBSCOhost and or not Searches for both terms: internet and education Searches for either of the terms: dog or canine Excludes one of the terms: nuclear not weapons Searches for the exact phrase: social anthropology *? Searches for stem term only: market* finds market, markets, marketing etc Replaces a single character: wom?n searches for woman and women Exercise 1: Search for articles about cell phone use while driving. Analyse the concepts and think of alternative terms: cell phone(s) mobile phone(s) driving Step 1: Do a comparison search: cell phone in Default Fields and cell phone in Title field. Search for cell phone in Default Fields title, source, author and abstract (Set 1) Search for cell phone in the Title field only to get a better result (Set 2) Step 2: Search for alternative terms for cell phone in the Title field (Set 3) Click the Search History tab to see your previous searches: 4

4 Step 3: Combine the search result from Set 3 with driving by using the set number from your search history: 4.2 Limiting or Expanding Your Search Results Limiting your search results You can always limit your search results by clicking the tab. From here you can limit your search results to: full text only articles published in scholarly journals only a particular journal within a certain period of time more limit options are available in each individual EBSCOhost database. Scroll down to see more limits for each database. Exercise 2: Limit your search S3 (cell phone* or mobile phone*) and driving to full text articles published after 2000 only. To remove limits, click the tab and click Exercise 3: Find articles that contain Vodafone in the title, published in the Wall Street Journal 5

5 4.2.2 Expanding your search results You can also expand your search by clicking the tab and then clicking the Expanders link. At the bottom of the screen you can expand your search results by: searching within the full text of the articles including all search terms by default searching for related words 4.3 Search Results Citation and records The citations of the articles will be displayed in the search results. The citation provides bibliographic information about the article. It normally includes article title, author and source (journal title, date of publication, volume, issue, page numbers). Citation: title, author and source EBSCOhost article formats HTML and PDF Records in EBSCOhost may be available in several formats: Citation, HTML Full Text or PDF Full Text. Full text articles in EBSCOhost are available either in HTML or PDF format. OR Click on the title link Citation The citation includes the article s author, title and where the article was published, as well as an abstract (brief summary of the article). HTML Full Text without graphics The HTML Full Text (without graphics) format includes the citation and abstract, along with the complete text of the article. It does not include graphics such as photographs, illustrations or charts that were originally published with the article. HTML Full Text with graphics The HTML Full Text (with graphics) format provides the citation, abstract and full text of the article. It also includes all graphics, such as photographs, illustrations or charts that were originally published with the article. PDF Full Text The PDF Full Text format is a scanned image of the article pages as they were originally printed, delivered in PDF Portable Document Format. The benefits of this version include: page numbering of the printed publication, compact font size that is easier to read and often uses fewer pages when printed. 6

6 An example of HTML format: An example of PDF format: PDF format is good for page numbers and for printing, although large files may need to be printed in sections. HTML format is good for viewing online and for saving onto disk Adding articles to a folder If you are interested in several articles, you can add them to a folder then print, or save them all at the same time. 1. On the search results page and tick the icon next to each title. This will add the articles to a folder. 2. Click on the link at the top of the search results page. 3. Only the articles that you have ticked are displayed in the folder. You can now print, or save them all at the same time. 7

7 4.3.4 Printing, ing and saving your search results You can print, or save an article or all the articles in your folder by clicking on the following icons: : print article(s) : article(s) : save article(s) onto a disk or USB drive Exporting articles to EndNote 1. In your Folder List, click on the Save to Disk icon. 2. Select the Bibliographic Manager tab. 3. Select Direct Export to your bibliographic management software. 4. Click on Save. To export a single article to EndNote, follow the same procedure, clicking on the Save icon in the article record Preferences change your display options You can change the display options of your search results by clicking the Preferences link at the top of the screen: Note: the display options you have changed only apply to your current EBSCOhost search. Once you log out of the database, the display options will revert back to the default options. 5. Other Searching/Browsing Functions 5.1 Browsing Publications If the icon is available in an EBSCO database, you can use it to browse a list of the publications from each EBSCO database. You can browse this list alphabetically, or search keyword by Subject, by Subject and Descriptors or Match My Words. 8

8 5.2 Searching Subject Terms If the subject terms. icon is available in an EBSCO database, you can use it to browse or search for The Subject term list is a controlled vocabulary of terms that explains the main points of the article and therefore assists in more effectively searching the database. The Subjects terms are drawn from the subjects assigned to each record / article; therefore, all terms will provide links to relevant records. You can browse this list alphabetically or as Relevancy Ranked (keyword search). 5.3 Searching Indexes If the icon is available in an EBSCO database, you can use it to browse all indexed terms that occur in specific fields in a database. Use the drop-down menu to choose an index to browse. Indexes can also be searched using tags. Since browsable indexes are phrase indexed, the exact form and spelling of terms as they appear in the database must be used in conjunction with the tags when entering a search manually. 5.4 Searching References If the icon is available in an EBSCO database, you can use it to extend a search beyond the initial result list to records that are cited by an article. These citation records can be accessed through an article's "References" link, or through the References search screen. See online help for a detailed description of this feature. 5.5 Searching for Images If the icon is available in an EBSCO database, you can use it to search for: Photos of people Natural science photos Photos of places Historical photos Maps Flags Click on the button at the top of the search screen. Tick the category that you would like to search and enter your search term(s). 9

EBSCOhost Account and Alerts In EBSCOhost you can set up a free EBSCO account to check your saved searches, search alerts, journal alerts, etc. 6.1 Creating a Free Personal Account in EBSCOhost 1. Click on at the top left hand side of the EBSCOhost search screen. 2. Click on on the next screen. 3. Fill in the online form and click then click. Please remember your user name and password for your EBSCOhost account. 6.2 Saving Your Search or Search Alerts 1. Click on the tab in the second half of the search screen. 2. Click on to save your searches (login if you haven t already). You can save your searches: Permanently Temporarily (24 hours) or As an alert you will receive an alert of your last search result 3. Once you login to your personal account, you can also: : open, edit or re-run your saved searches : open and edit your saved alerts 10

10 An example of EBSCO alerts: Before your alert expires, you will receive an reminder to renew it: 6.3 Setting Up New Issue Alerts You can set up new journal issue alerts in two ways: publications list or journal search New issue alerts via publications list This option is only available in some EBSCOhost databases. 1. Click on the tab. 2. Click the journal title that you would like to receive new issue alerts for. 11

11 3. Click on Journal Alert to log in. 4. Fill in the online form 5. Click New issue alerts via journal search When you search more than one EBSCOhost database at a time, the Publication search option is not available. You need to search in the Journal Name field to set up a new issue alert. For three EBSCOhost databases (Clinical Pharmacology, Clinical Reference Systems and EBSCO Animals) there is no Publication search option or Journal Name field you therefore cannot set up a journal alert in these databases. 1. Search for the journal title in the Journal Name field. For example: You will get all the articles published in this journal. 12

12 2. Click Save Searches / Alerts in the Search History / Alerts tab to save this search. You will receive an alert when new issues are added onto EBSCOhost. 7. Summary of EBSCOhost 1. Use Advanced Search where you can save and reuse your search history and limit your search to particular fields. Click the to save or reuse your search histories. Click the tab to expand or limit your search. 2. Boolean Operators: AND / OR / NOT cell phone or mobile phone mobile phone not zealand (cell phone or mobile phone) and zealand 3. Phrase Search: default or you can add around search terms. mobile phone = mobile phone 4. Truncation Signs: * and? * eg. comput* searches for computing, computer, computers, computerise etc? eg. wom?n searches for both women and woman 5. More search options may be available in some individual EBSCOhost databases, such Subject Heading search and Publication search. 6. Alerts You can save your search alerts by clicking the Search History/Alerts tab. You can also set up new journal issue alerts by clicking the Publication tab in some individual databases.
