OAI is a simple and standard protocol Service provider can harvest metadata from data providers efficiently and automatically User can search all collection of participating units through service provider Many digital library and e-journal projects support OAI Service provider just harvest metadata, the digital objects still deposit at the joined institutions Chao-chen Chen 7 What OAI define? But we have no digital objects in hands. So we cannot integrate the images and metadata to design vivid displayed formats. Everyone has different expectation for union catalog. This makes it hard to devise generally acceptable subject trees for browsing Chao-chen Chen 34
