DB07a Business Source Complete Business Source Complete provides full-text for approximately 2,300 scholarly business journals covering management, economics, finance, accounting, international business and marketing. Back-runs vary but some journals, e.g. Harvard Business Review, have coverage from 1965 to date. Includes Datamonitor company information. Some records give abstracts only. Some titles are embargoed by the publisher so do not have the full text of the most recent issues. ACCESS Access the library webpage through MyLSBU (Library and Academic -> Library) Select the E-Resources tab and type in Business Source Complete Click on Search Click on the link for Business Source Complete. SEARCHING The advanced search page will open automatically:
When searching Business Source Complete, you can use search techniques that are commonly used in other databases and search engines. Below are some of these search commands: AND: social media and marketing This will find articles which contain both words OR: e-business OR e-commerce e-business can also be called e-commerce so this will find articles which mention either e-business or e-commerce, so you will get more results. NOT: public sector NOT health This will dismiss articles with the word health in it so your search will be more relevant.
Truncation * This lets you cut off a word so you can pick up its various forms. So econom* will find economics, economic, economical, economies, economy etc. Phrase searching Business Source Complete will let you search for phrases by putting speech marks round the phrase e.g. credit crunch, marketing strategy or European Union. This helps you to get a more precise search. Like most databases, with Business Source Complete you can select where you want your keywords or phrases to be searched. It is advisable to search within the abstract of the article. This is the journal article summary so if these words or phrases appear in this part, then it is more likely to be a useful article.
Once you have a list of results on Business Source Complete, you may find that you have lots of results. There are a number of ways to narrow your search down so that it becomes more manageable for you to assess them. You can then use the filters on the left-hand-side to narrow down your search, under Refine results. Normally, you d be looking for articles published within the last five years and you could also check the box Linked Full Text which will only list articles where the full-text is available and Scholarly (Peer Reviewed) Journals so you know that the source is of a high academic standard. You can also refine your results further using these filters here.
DISPLAYING AND SAVING RECORDS Once you are looking through your list of results, you can click on HTML Full Text to view the article in HTML format or PDF Full Text to view the article in PDF format. You can then print or save these articles as you would any HTML or PDF document. You will also see the option to Add to Folder using the folder icon next to the title: If you click on this, you ll add these articles to your folder. You can then go to on the top-right of the screen, click on this and check the box Select All. You can then either save them on a USB stick or the articles to yourself (these options can be seen on the right-handside).
SEARCHING ACROSS OTHER DATABASES Once you re in Business Source Complete, you are able to search across other EBSCO databases. To do this, click on Choose Databases You then have the option to select the following: Once you ve selected the databases you wish to use, click on OK. You will return to the search screen where you can carry out your search as before.
CREATING AN ACCOUNT AND SAVING YOUR SEARCH You may wish to create an EBSCO account. Doing so will allow you to save your search strategies and articles. To do this, click on Sign In Then click on Create a new Account Fill out your details and click on Save Changes. Next time you carry out a search and obtain a list of results, you can save these by adding them to your folder (see DISPLAYING AND SAVING RECORDS above) and clicking on
EXPORTING ARTICLES TO REFWORKS You may decide you want to use RefWorks to formulate your references and, with Business Source Complete, you can send articles straight to your account. Once articles are in your folder, you can select all and the click on Export: You then select Direct export to RefWorks: Then click on Save. FURTHER HELP For further help using Business Source Complete, contact the Information Advisers for Business on Or you can use the Help function on the Business Source Complete database (top right of screen).
