1 Exploring the Literature of Economics: Using Business Source Complete, SocIndex, The Wiley Online Library, and ScienceDirect Busse Library, Fall 2011 The following print and electronic resources serve as general guides for class assignments. Please see the library staff for further assistance. Explore EBSCOHost s Social Sciences and Business Clusters: Locating Periodical Articles Access the database roster ( Databases ) from library homepage. You may also select the Library tab in MyCampus to view the library homepage. Now select EBSCOhost Databases and Databases for Psychology, Sociology, and Social Work or Databases for Business. Select the Choose Databases link; note the various databases and their collection emphases. Select (or deselect) databases applicable to your search. The advanced search option is the default EBSCOhost screen; use limiters of various sorts full text only, publication date range, and/or scholarly (peer) reviewed articles. Limiters can also be activated following the execution of any search; all appear in the left column adjacent to search results. Within search results, interpret your findings. Note: (1) abstracts to indicate scholarly materials; (2) note field (for library holdings); and (3) HTML/PDF and linked text formats. Interlibrary loan is available via Request this article. The Cite icon (right column) reveals MPA, APA, Chicago, and other citation details. Visit the library webpage Citation Assistance for a basic guide to APA style, model papers, and for APA tutorials.

2 2 Creating EBSCO Folders: How do I organize and store search results for future use? After performing any search of interest, mark your pertinent search results by selecting Add to Folder (gold folder icon) under any citation/abstract. The database will then indicate that the item has been marked for saving; the right frame also notes (in gold bar) that the Folder has items. When you have finished marking records, select either the Folder View option in the right frame or Folder from the blue masthead at the top of the screen. If you wish to save the items for future use, create an account and then build a library of folders for your needs. Begin by signing in to My EBSCOhost. Create a new account and enter required information. You may now log in and make a folder to hold your results. Select new (across from My Custom ) to name a new folder; insert name and select save. The new folder then appears in your roster. Select any combination of search results or mark all of them; then either prompt the database to copy the results ( Copy To ) or to move the results ( Move To ) and select your folder of choice. Select a folder s name to see Edit and Share options; edit allows for renaming and share allows for ing of full folder contents. Articles indicates how many citations are included in the folder. Explore The Wiley Online Library: Peer Reviewed (Scholarly) Literature Considered one of the world's premier resources for study, teaching, and advanced research, this database offers scholarly materials in full-text format from 1997 to the present. Wiley InterScience, now known as Wiley Online Library, has improved subject browsing from its homepage and subject areas. Full text access for roughly 1500 journals dates from 1997; users will find icons indicating Mount Mercy s subscription. An open padlock icon represents titles within the Busse collection; padlocks with an F highlight free content. Browse collections from the main page s subject roster; select Business, Economics, Finance & Accounting. Now select Economics.

3 3 On the economics subject page, select a topic (right column) to view publications in that category. Busse s subscription is limited to Wiley journals; for articles pre-dating 1997, only citations and abstracts are available. The Wiley interface offers two search methods: (1) Selecting a topic of interest and searching across a single publication in that topic; or (2) Using the Advanced Search option to search across the entire interface. Within search results, note padlock icons; an open padlock indicates full access to the text. A padlock with the word free indicates wholly free content. Entries lacking a padlock will only present a citation and abstract. To receive these articles by interlibrary loan, please fill out the library s online form (via library website) or send your citation to the library for processing (ill@mtmercy.edu). You may also conduct a full search of the Wiley interface; insert your term of interest (e.g., poverty rates in the United States ) into the search window or select Advanced Search for further options.

4 4 Explore ScienceDirect from Elsevier ScienceDirect College Edition from Elsevier offers over 1000 full-text, scholarly journals dating from Search results offer immediate access to abstracts and related articles. To explore literature, select the Journals tab from the search window; then select Social Sciences from the subject roster. You should also include the document type limiter article. Place your search terms into the appropriate fields; select Abstract, Title, and Keywords as a search option. Search results offer journal title limiters, topic choices, and years of interest. Select any combination to further refine your results. Article titles are shown in blue (with search terms denoted in red), followed by publication information. Titles preceded by a green, page icon indicate the full text is available. Select preview to see an article s abstract; direct links access related articles and the PDF file. To request an ILL from ScienceDirect, select an article s title to see its full record. Select the envelope icon on the left ( article ); in the succeeding screen, place your name and address in the Senders fields. Place ill@mtmercy.edu in the recipient s field. Our staff will then locate the article for you and send it electronically. Upon selecting an article s title from search results, you then display the item s full record. Access here includes the PDF file, related journal articles, and reference work articles. Internal citations appear as active links to the references list and offer points of entry for locating the article.
