All About Search Engines By Zulyn Hernandez
Search Engines
Search and advanced Search features The Search Engine is a computer program that searches through large amounts of text or other data. The Search Engine will scan its database and/or the World Wide Web searching for sites that meet the keyword or query match. To improve the results of our search, the search engines Web site uses different search engine features. You may find more information on the Search Engine Features Web site. The URL of this Web site is
Search and advanced Search features Choose Words Carefully Use specific words to describe exactly what you're looking for. More general terms will give a larger number of results, so try to narrow your search. For example: try: "19th century chairs" instead of "old furniture" use: "digital camera reviews" instead of "electronics" Make sure to watch for words with more than one meaning. If you're looking for information on modeling, make sure you specify "fashion" or "clay."
Search and advanced Search features Search Engine Features: Math Commands Including Words: The + symbol, requires that a search engine finds pages that MUST include the words you enter. Example: Dog +cats If you want to see pages about the latest "in thing, search for "+in" thing." Excluding Words: The symbol, makes sure that a search engine finds pages that has one word but does not include another word. Example: +clinton lewinsky. if you want to see pages about dogs with no mention of poodles, search for "dogs -poodles." The quotes symbols make sure that a search engine finds pages that have all the words and in the exact order.
Search and advanced Search features (Continued) Power Searching Commands Search Meta Words Here is a list of special keywords that give you results unique to that special keyword instruction. You can enter these Meta words directly into the Search box. Site Search: : this allows one to find all documents within a particular domain and all it's subdomains. Example: site:yahoo.com Hostname Search: this allows one to find all documents from a particular host only. Example: hostname:mars.jpl.nasa.gov hostname:autos.yahoo.co
Search and advanced Search features (Continued) Link Search: this allows one to find documents that link to a particular url. Example: link: Inurl Search: this allows one to find a specific keyword as part of indexed urls. Example: inurl:bulgarian Intitle Search: this allows one to find a specific keyword as part of the indexed titles. Example: intitle:bulgarian
Search and advanced Search features (continued) Boolean Commands The Boolean search commands have been used by professionals for searching through traditional databases for years. Using the Math Commands is a good alternative. The OR command is used in order to allow any specified terms to be present on the Web pages listed in results. If you're equally interested in two or more alternatives, use OR in capital letters. For example, search for "new zealand kayaking OR biking." Word Order To search for an exact phrase,, just put quotation marks around two or more words. For example, search on "to be or not to be" (typing the quotation marks into the box).
Search and advanced Search features (continued) The AND command is used in order to require that all search terms be present on the Web pages listed in result. The NOT command is used in order to require that a particular search NOT be present on Web pages listed in result. The NEAR command is used to specify how close terms should appear to each other. Example: moon NEAR river. The Nesting () allows you to build complex queries. You nest queries using parentheses, like this: impeachment AND (clinton OR johnson)
