4 Locating Resources for Your Unit Plan Module 2.3 P E D A G O G I C A L P R A C T I C E S (10 minutes) Description: During this activity, you will discuss ways to ensure that you obtain the materials you and your students use in multimedia projects lawfully under the constraints of fair dealing. Discuss the challenges you foresee in trying to follow the fair dealing guidelines for educational multimedia. List specific guidelines you will implement in your classroom to ensure that these guidelines are followed. Share strategies for ensuring that your students understand copyright.
5 Module 2.4 Locating Resources for Your Unit Plan Activity 1 Using Web Search Engines and Directories (1 hour) Description: You will read information about and practice using directories, search engines, and meta search engines to conduct research on the Internet to find resources for your Unit Plan. View sample presentation and documents on conducting searches located in the Program CD-ROM Module 2, Activity 1 folder. Step 1: Understanding Directories and Search Engines Using a Directory If you seek general information on a broad topic, use a Web directory or index. Directories are arranged by subject and usually include return links to the top level of the directory s Web site rather than to individual pages. Examples of directories are: Yahoo! Magellan Yahooligans! The Internet Public Library INTEL TEACH TO THE FUTURE
6 Locating Resources for Your Unit Plan Module 2.5 If you choose to use a directory: 1. Select from the directory s broad categories, and narrow your focus step by step. 2. Search on a broad keyword (like Canada or Charter of Rights), and continue clicking through to link to more specific topics. 3. If one directory does not give you satisfactory results, try another one. Results often vary widely from one directory to another. Using Search Engines If you want very specific information and you know the appropriate titles, phrases, or technical language, use a search engine or meta search engine. Search engines continually visit Web sites on the Internet in order to create computer-generated catalogs of Web pages. In most cases, search engines are best used to locate a specific piece of information such as a known document, image, or phrase rather than a general subject. 7 Module 2.6 Locating Resources for Your Unit Plan Examples of search engines include: Alta Vista Excite Google HotBot Infoseek Using Meta Search Engines If you want to search multiple databases simultaneously, use a meta search engine. It retrieves results from various databases and gives a consolidated report of its findings. Examples of meta search engines are: Metacrawler Dogpile All-in-One AskJeeves! INTEL TEACH TO THE FUTURE
8 Locating Resources for Your Unit Plan Module 2.7 Step 2: Narrowing Your Search with Search Engines When conducting an Internet search, it is useful to start with a broad concept, narrowing as you begin to find information. Computerized search mechanisms are based on Boolean logic, named after George Boole, a nineteenth-century English mathematician who devised a new system for analyzing variables. It is helpful to be familiar with Boolean logic when doing online Internet research. Remember, each search engine is different. You may want to check the search engine s help page before beginning your search. Using Boolean Logic If there are too many choices or you get the wrong results, some search engines allow you to narrow your search by using Boolean logic. Boolean logic consists of three logical operators: OR, AND, and NOT. AND requires all terms to appear in a record. OR retrieves records with either term. NOT excludes terms. Using Simplified Boolean Logic Using the Concepts of Require or Reject Some search engines allow you to designate the most important words within your search. Insert a + (plus sign) immediately before the most important words. Insert a - (minus sign) immediately before a word to exclude it. (For example, +oatmeal +cookies -raisins returns sites that have the words oatmeal and cookies, but not raisins.) Searching by Phrase If you are looking for an exact phrase or string of words, enclose the phrase within quotation marks (for example, university admission requirements ).
9 Module 2.8 Locating Resources for Your Unit Plan Using Truncation If you want your search to include variant spellings or word endings, enter the first part of a keyword, and insert a symbol, usually* (an asterisk). (For example, dictat* retrieves dictator, dictated, and dictation.) Using Boolean Logic to Narrow Your Search 1. Open your Web browser. 2. Select one of the search engines listed on page In the Address box, type the Uniform Resource Locator (URL) for the search engine. 4. Focusing on your Unit Plan, decide on a search topic for this activity. 5. In the Search field, type a phrase or keyword(s) that reflects your search topic. 6. Press Enter. How many Web pages did your search locate? In your opinion, was this search successful? 7. Click Back to return to the search engine s home page. 8. Enclose the same phrase used in step 5 in quotation marks. 9. Press Enter. How many Web pages did your search locate? In your opinion, was this search successful? 10. Return to the search engine s home page. 11. Delete the quotation marks and put a + before all required words or a - before any words you want to exclude. 12. Press Enter. How many Web pages did your search locate? In your opinion, was this search successful? 13. Return to the search engine s home page. 14. Delete the + and - signs and use the words AND, OR and NOT. 15. Press Enter. How many Web pages did your search locate? In your opinion, was this search successful? 16. Return to the search engine s home page. 24. Delete the quotation marks and put a + before all required words or a - before any words you want to exclude. 25. Press Enter. How many Web pages did your search locate? In your opinion, was this search successful? 26. Return to the search engine s home page. 27. Delete the + and - signs and use the words: AND, OR and NOT. 28. Press Enter. How many Web pages did your search locate? In your opinion, was this search successful? List techniques that helped you effectively narrow your search.
11 Module 2.10 Locating Resources for Your Unit Plan Activity 2 Creating a Works Cited Page (15 minutes) Description: To ensure that you follow copyright laws discussed in Module 1, you need to establish a list of references as you save your images, sounds, and text. You can later use this information to create a formal Works Cited page or a simple list of Internet sources, depending on the age of your students. See the Works Cited directions and examples in Module 2 of the Program CD-ROM. 1. To save the address of the Web page, select it in the Address box. 2. On the Edit menu, click Copy (or press CTRL+C). 3. Open Word. 4. On the Edit menu, click Paste (or press CTRL+V). 5. On the File menu, click Save and save as Works Cited in the unit_support_materials folder in your teacher_support_materials folder. 6. Keep this file open as you find more materials and resources from the Internet. Note: When you type the full Internet address Uniform Resource Locator (URL) in Word and immediately press Enter or the Spacebar, the address becomes a hyperlink whereby you simply click it to connect to the site. If the default settings have been changed so this doesn t occur, simply select the address and click Insert Hyperlink or on the Insert menu, click Hyperlink. INTEL TEACH TO THE FUTURE
12 Locating Resources for Your Unit Plan Module 2.11 Activity 3 Locating Resources by Using Encarta (1 hour) Description: In this activity, you will install Encarta. After installation, you will explore and locate resources for your Unit. Step 1: Installing Encarta Almost all programs on CD-ROMs require you to install some files onto the computer s hard drive to run the program. Before installing any software on your system, you should save anything you are currently working on and close all programs. Most software installations require you to restart your computer at the end of installation. 1. Insert the Encarta Installation and Resources compact disc into the CD-ROM drive. Follow the onscreen instructions to install this software. 2. After installation, you will be prompted to restart your computer. Step 2: Exploring Encarta 1. After restarting your computer, insert Disc 1 into the CD-ROM drive. 2. Click the section called Find. You might be prompted to insert Disc 2 to view certain features of Encarta. 3. View the different resources available on Encarta. 4. Search for topics related to your Unit Plan. List the resources you found
13 Module 2.12 Locating Resources for Your Unit Plan Activity 4 Locating Resources for Your Unit Plan (1 3/4 hours) Description: During this activity, you will search the Internet for Web sites that will serve as resources for your Unit Plan. You will save the URLs to the Favorites folder in Internet Explorer for later use and for citing them as references. If you are planning to collaborate with other teachers on your Unit Plan, work as a team on this activity. Step 1: Locating Resources Using search directories or search engines, or the large educational sites listed below, locate text, pictures, and Web sites that you may want to use as you develop your Unit Plan. 14 Locating Resources for Your Unit Plan Module 2.13 Step 2: Saving a Web Address in Your Favorites Folder When you use Internet Explorer and find a site that may be useful, save it in your Favorites folder: 1. When you are on the page that you want to save, on the Favorites menu, click Add to Favorites. 2. The first time you add a Favorite, create a special folder specifically for your Unit Plan. 3. Click New Folder. 4. Type a name such as unit resources. 5. Click OK. 6. Look at the folders in the Create in box. Your new folder should appear in this list. Click your new folder to select it. 7. In the Name box, review the name that automatically came up for the current site. If the name is not clear, type a new name that is more recognizable. 8. Click OK.
15 Module 2.14 Locating Resources for Your Unit Plan Step 3: Copying Your Favorites Folder to Another Computer Continue searching the Internet for resources that you can use in presentations, Web sites, handouts, newsletters, background information, and so forth. Save them in your Favorites folder and before the next class session, copy the Favorites folder to a diskette so you can load it onto the computer in the lab. 1. Click the Start button, point to Programs, and then click Windows Explorer. 2. Under the C: drive, there is a folder called Windows. Click the + next the Windows folder. 3. Click the + next to the Favorites folder within the Windows folder. 4. Insert a blank, formatted disk into the floppy disk drive (usually the A: drive). 5. Drag the folder(s) under Favorites that you want to bring with you to the next training to the 3 1/2 Floppy (A:) drive. Hold down left mouse button and drag folders from the Favorites folder to the 3 1/2 Floppy (A:) drive 6. When you are at the computer on which you want your list of favorites to appear, simply copy the same Favorites subfolders from your disk to the Favorites folder in the Windows folder of the new computer. 16 Locating Resources for Your Unit Plan Module 2.15 Step 4: Saving a Picture or Graphic When you find a picture on a Web page that you want to use in your Unit, save the picture in your images_sounds folder. 1. Right-click the picture to display a shortcut menu. 2. Click Save Picture As. 3. A dialog box appears. Locate your Program folder by using the Save In box to display a drive s contents, and then double-clicking folders on that drive. To move from a subfolder to its parent folder, click Up One Level. Open your images_sounds folder. Save all of your graphics and sounds in this folder. 4. Look at the name of the graphic file. You may want to rename the image if the suggested name does not make sense to you; however, do not delete or change the three letters that follow the period (.gif or.jpg). Click Save. Note: To ensure that the image file name is consistently displayed in lowercase, type.gif or.jpg to override the default upper-case naming system. 5. Save the source information to your Works Cited page.
17 Module 2.16 Locating Resources for Your Unit Plan T A K E - H O M E A C T I V I T Y Evaluating Resources on the Internet Description: When students conduct research by using the Internet, it is important that they know how to evaluate the material they find on the Web. Students often assume that information they find on the Web is factual. Help your students to determine if a site has usable, factual, and reliable information. For younger students, you may want to conduct the research yourself and create a Web site or Favorites folder that has links to the pages that you want them to use. Using the form on the following pages, evaluate three sites that might be useful for your unit. The sites can be resources for students or teachers. This form is available in the Module 2 folder on the Program CD-ROM. You may want to visit the following Web sites before you begin your search: National Geographic Microsoft Lesson Collection Microsoft Encarta Schoolhouse: Microsoft Encarta Lesson Collection PBS Online MarcoPolo Program INTEL TEACH TO THE FUTURE
