1 EXERCISE 1-IDENTIFY COMPUTER S DRIVES (YOUR STORAGE DEVICES) 1. Place USB in USB port. 2. Open your computer s folder. 3. Notice the drives that are available. 4. If you cannot see drives or folders do the following: i. Click on Computers or My Computer or This PC icon until you can see folders and drives on the right side of your screen. 5. List the letter of the drive first, and then the type of format the drive is assigned. Example OS (C) Local Disk. 6. Place each drive and its assigned name on each line below. Remember each drive represents a filing cabinet drawer where information can be stored P a g e 1 9
2 EXERCISE 2-OPEN DRIVES. 1. Double-Click C:\ drive (OS (C)) 2. Notice the name of folders on this drive 3. How many folders is on your C:\ drive? 4. Scroll down. 5. If you see files, how many files are not in folders on your C:\ drive? 6. Double-click WINDOWS folder. 7. Notice folders inside the WINDOWS folder. 8. True or False. There are more than five sub-folders inside the WINDOWS folder Sub-folders are folders inside of folders. A folder can have several sub-folders and the sub-folders can have sub-folders and so on. 9. Notice where you are on your computer(i.e. Filing cabinet) Look for something like this on your address bar: ThisPC\OS (C)\WINDOWS P a g e 2 9
3 10. This tells you the following about where you are on your computer. a. You are in the WINDOWS folder. b. The WINDOWS folder is located on the OS (C) drive c. The OS (C) drive is located on your computer, THIS PC. d. OS (C) is a root drive. P a g e 3 9
4 EXERCISE 3-BACK TO ROOT DRIVE 1. To get back to the C:\ root drive do the following: a. Click the BACK or UP button once b. Click the BACK or UP button again c. You should be at OS (C) which is your C:\ root drive. BACK UP P a g e 4 9
5 EXERCISE 4-CREATE, RENAME AND DELETE FOLDERS. 1. Click on THIS PC or COMPUTER or MY COMPUTER 2. Double-click on USB REMOVABLE or USB DISK or USB####(?:) 3. Right-click anywhere on the screen that does not have file names or icons. 4. SCROLL to NAME 5. Click FOLDER 6. Type Project Folder 7. Press ENTER 8. Double-click PROJECT FOLDER 9. Repeat steps Type My First Project 11. Press ENTER 12. Click the BACK or UP button once 13. Right-click PROJECT FOLDER 14. Scroll down RENAME 15. Click RENAME 16. TYPE All Projects 17. Press ENTER 18. Click ALL PROJECTS folder 19. Press the DELETE icon, DELETE key or Right-Click folder and select DELECT. Note: By deleting the ALL PROJECTS folder, you delete the sub-folder My First Project also. P a g e 5 9
6 EXERCISE 5-COPY FILES TO FOLDERS. By copying a file you have the same file in multiple locations. It stays in its original location as well as the location you are copying to. NOTE: Think of a copier. When you copy a document, you have two documents, an original and the copy. Your assignment is to copy files from one location to another because you are assisting on a project that has a team of six. Do the following: 1. Download Windows Data Files folder and save on your USB drive. 2. Open Folder by double-clicking Folder icon located on Task Bar. 3. Click on THIS PC or COMPUTER or MY COMPUTER 4. Click on USB drive 5. Create a folder and type Computer Projects as the project name. 6. With Computer Projects folder opened: a. Create three (3) subfolders for different sections of the project. Name the folders the following: i. Word Processing Documents ii. Graphics iii. Financial Documents 7. Go to the Windows Data Files folder and double-click 8. Copy the files Canada Meeting Memo and North Shore Memo to the folder Word Processing Documents by doing the following: a. Click Canada Meeting Memo b. Hold the CTRL-key down and Click North Shore Memo c. Right-click and select CUT d. Double-click Word Processing Documents P a g e 6 9
7 e. Right-click and select PASTE 9. Copy the file Paris to the graphics folder by doing the following. i. Go to the Windows Data Files folder and double-click ii. Right-click Paris iii. Select CUT iv. Double-click Graphics folder b. Right-click and select paste 10. Copy the file Current Budget file to the Financial Documents. a. Confirm that all the files have been copied to the correct folders by clicking on them individually. P a g e 7 9
8 EXERCISE 6-DELETE FILES IN FOLDERS. To delete a file from a folder, you have to open the folder and delete the specified file. Be careful because if you delete the folder you will delete all of the contents of the folder. To delete files from your Computer Project folder do the following: 1. Double click Computer Project folder 2. Double-click Word Processing Documents folder a. Click Canada Meeting Memo b. Hold the CTRL-key down and Click North Shore Memo c. Right-click and select DELETE d. At dialogue box Click YES to delete the files. 3. Double click Computer Project folder 4. Double-click Graphics folder a. Right-click the Paris file and select DELETE b. At dialogue box Click YES to delete the files. 5. Double click Computer Project folder 6. Double-click Financial Documents folder a. Right-click the Current Budget file and select DELETE b. At dialogue box Click YES to delete the files. P a g e 8 9
9 EXERCISE 7-MOVE ILES TO FOLDERS. To move a file from one location to another is done by cutting the file. Cut means move. When you move to file, it is no longer in its original locaton. It now resides in its new location. By copying a file you have the same file in multiple locations. Your assignment is to move files from one location to another because you are taking over a project and need to get files needed in order for you to work on the project. Do the following: 1. Go to the Windows Data Files folder and double-click 2. Move the files Canada Meeting Memo and North Shore Memo to the folder Word Processing Documents by doing the following: a. Click Canada Meeting Memo b. Hold the CTRL-key down and Click North Shore Memo c. Right-click and select CUT d. Double-click Word Processing Documents e. Right-click and select PASTE 3. Move the file Paris to the graphics folder by doing the following. i. Go to the Windows Data Files folder and double-click ii. Right-click Paris iii. Select CUT iv. Double-click Graphics folder b. Right-click and select paste 4. Move the file Current Budget file to the Financial Documents. a. Confirm that all the files have been copied to the correct folders by clicking on them individually.
