Prisma MediaCenter Unified Management Agent (UMA) Installation Instructions Overview Introduction This document provides an overview of the Unified Management Agent (UMA) and lists the products that will support UMA. For users who already have Prisma FiberLinX modules, this document also identifies the system requirements for upgrading to UMA and provides a brief overview of the upgrade process. This document is intended for authorized service personnel who have experience working with similar equipment. The service personnel should have appropriate background and knowledge to complete the procedures described in this document. Safe Operation for Software Controlling Optical Transmission Equipment If this manual discusses software, the software described is used to monitor and/or control ours and other vendors electrical and optical equipment designed to transmit video, voice, or data signals. Certain safety precautions must be observed when operating equipment of this nature. For equipment specific safety requirements, refer to the appropriate section of the equipment documentation. For safe operation of this software, refer to the following warnings. WARNING: Ensure that all optical connections are complete or terminated before using this equipment to remotely control a laser device. An optical or laser device can pose a hazard to remotely located personnel when operated without their knowledge. Allow only personnel trained in laser safety to operate this software. Otherwise, injuries to personnel may occur. Restrict access of this software to authorized personnel only. Install this software in equipment that is located in a restricted access area.
Overview Qualified Personnel Only appropriately qualified and skilled service personnel should attempt to install, operate, maintain, and service this product. WARNING: Allow only qualified and skilled personnel to install, operate, maintain, and service this product. Otherwise, personal injury or equipment damage may occur Rev B
Products that Support UMA Products that Support UMA The following product groups support UMA: Prisma FiberLinX series (10/100 and Gigabit versions) Future Prisma modules that have on-board SNMP management Prisma MediaCenter series (6-slot and 20-slot models) with an SNMP management module Each of the devices listed above has its own SNMP agent. FiberLinX modules have on-board intelligence, while Prisma MediaCenters use an SNMP module for management. Notes: UMA is not applicable to Prisma modules that do not have on-board SNMP management. UMA is not available on previous models of SNMP-manageable chassis, such as the 2-slot and 8-slot Prisma MediaCenter chassis. In this document, unless noted otherwise, FiberLinX and Prisma FiberLinX refer to both Prisma FiberLinx (10/100) and Prisma GigaFiberLinX (Gigabit). For specific UMA usage requirements, see Requirements for Upgrading to UMA Compatibility (on page 6) Rev B 3
UMA Overview UMA Overview The Unified Management Agent allows users to manage all modules installed in a Prisma MediaCenter, including those with on-board intelligence, with a single IP address and from a central location. Using UMA requires only a single, dedicated management port. By not requiring separate SNMP connections for each device means, UMA conserves the usage of switch ports. Although each FiberLinX has its own agent, UMA lets users manage any or all FiberLinX modules installed at the Central Office (CO). When deploying FiberLinx units in pairs between the CO and remote sites (CPE), each Host FiberLinX takes over the SNMP duties for itself and its Remote FiberLinX. Thus, UMA enables users to manage multiple FiberLinX units from the single IP address of the chassis at the CO. Suppose that there are 20 FiberLinX modules installed in a Prisma MediaCenter/20 at the CO, each connected to a Remote FiberLinX. With this arrangement, UMA lets users manage all 41 devices (20 Host-FiberLinX and 20 Remote-FiberLinX, plus the chassis itself) with the single IP address assigned to the Prisma MediaCenter. Alternatively, users could assign separate IP addresses to each FiberLinX and manage them independently, if desired. UMA offers management flexibility. Note: UMA is not applicable when using the FiberLinX only at the Customer Premises (CPE) Rev B
How UMA Works How UMA Works With UMA When an SNMP request for a FiberLinX comes in, the Prisma MediaCenter passes the request to the SNMP agent in the desired module. The FiberLinX provides the SNMP response, which is then routed through the Prisma MediaCenter and supplied to PrismaView or another SNMP management application. Without UMA When an SNMP request for a FiberLinX comes in, the Prisma MediaCenter cycles through each slot, checking for FiberLinX modules. The Prisma MediaCenter sees FiberLinX modules in the chassis, but does not manage them. Management for each FiberLinX requires a separate connection and a separate IP address. Although users can select each FiberLinX in the chassis, the Prisma MediaCenter cannot manage it directly. Easy Upgrades With UMA UMA lets users easily upgrade any or all FiberLinX modules in a chassis with just a few mouse clicks. For additional information regarding File Management for upgrading firmware, refer to the Administration Tab in the iconfig Help file. In addition, while upgrades are in process, all devices in the chassis are fully functional. When a firmware code upgrade is needed, the user initializes an upgrade task via PrismaView to update the Host FiberLinX firmware. The Host FiberLinX then sends a copy of the new firmware to the Remote FiberLinX. The Remote FiberLinX upgrades the new code via Upgrade Task Rev B 5
UMA Compatibility Upgrade Process UMA Compatibility Upgrade Process Most FiberLinX modules in the field are upgradeable, but not all are upgradeable to work with UMA. A utility called the Batch Upgrader lets users easily determine whether a particular FiberLinX module is upgradeable. This section describes the process of using the Batch Upgrader utility. Requirements for Upgrading to UMA Compatibility The hardware and software requirements for compatibility with the Unified Management Agent are as follows: Software - PrismaView 1.8 or higher Device firmware (Flash PROM) - Prisma MediaCenter firmware B0 or higher - Prisma FiberLinX firmware C0 or higher - Prisma Giga-FiberLinX firmware B0 or higher Additional Requirements - Some FiberLinX units will require updates to hardware and firmware (not Flash PROM firmware) which are only upgradeable by an appointed technician. See Using the Batch Upgrader (on page 6) for details. Note: iconfig can confirm the version of Flash PROM firmware. The Batch Upgrader can confirm if Prisma FiberLinX units are upgradeable for UMA compatibility. Once all of the elements listed above are upgraded, UMA is available and is enabled for compatible products. However, users can still choose to manage FiberLinX units independently rather than use UMA functionality. Batch Upgrader Utility Tool The Batch Upgrader utility software application allows users to upgrade the Flash PROM firmware of multiple devices. The Batch Upgrader can also assist in the initial transition to UMA compatibility. The Batch Upgrader can determine whether Prisma FiberLinX modules are capable of being upgraded to UMA compatibility, and will indicate the action(s) required for the upgrade. Using the Batch Upgrader Following is a brief overview of the upgrade process. For detailed information on using the Batch Upgrader, see the Batch Upgrader Help file Rev B
UMA Compatibility Upgrade Process 1 Create the list of items to upgrade. The list can be created in the Batch Upgrader or imported from PrismaView, and can include devices of multiple types (i.e., Prisma MediaCenter, PrismaFiberLinX, PrismaGiga-FiberLinX, etc.). However, users can only Batch Upgrade devices that use the same flash PROM. A separate Batch Upgrade must be performed for each device (flash PROM) type. 2 Validate the list of items to upgrade. This checks the PROM name and date to confirm that the device can communicate with the Batch Upgrader before attempting an update. Each device must be validated before adding it to the upgrade list. We also recommend validating all Prisma FiberLinX devices for UMA compatibility. Once the validation process is complete, the Status field in the Batch Upgrader screen updates to show the results for each device. In the Status field: The word Validated indicates that the device will communicate with the Batch Upgrader. A code such as REMOTE indicates the degree of UMA compatibility. In the example shown below, all three devices were able to communicate with the Batch Upgrader. The Status Legend, accessible from the Batch Upgrader Help menu, identifies the meanings of the UMA compatibility codes in the Status field Rev B 7
UMA Compatibility Upgrade Process For example, according to the Status Legend, the code HOST in the example above indicates that the tested device is not UMA compatible as a host. Notes: For PrismaFiberLinX units that are non-upgradeable (i.e. not UMA capable as host), we recommend removing them from the CO and installing at a CPE or reserving them for future CPE expansion. Contact Technical Support if the FiberLinX units require the additional hardware and/or firmware updates. See Support Telephone Numbers (on page 11) for contact information. 3 Make sure the flash PROM file for the Upgrade is correct. For Example: Prisma MediaCenter firmware B Rev B
PrismaFiberLinX firmware C0 PrismaGiga-FiberLinX firmware B0 UMA Compatibility Upgrade Process 4 Upgrade, if desired. Select each device in the list to upgrade. All selected devices must use the same PROM. Once the upgrade is performed, the Status field in the Batch Upgrader will show whether each device was successfully upgraded. Using UMA to Upgrade Flash PROM Firmware Once the devices are upgraded and are UMA compable, use UMA s File Management functionality to easily upload and store new firmware versions for upgrading multiple devices installed in, or connected to, a Prisma MediaCenter. Access UMA s File Management functionality in the Adminstration tab of the iconfig utility of PrismaView. General Information For more information on using UMA, please refer to the following Help files: iconfig Help File PrismaFiberLinX Help File Rev B 9
