UDDI ervices Universal Description, Discovery, and Integration (UDDI) acts as an internal catalog of their available Web services Used primarily on and intranet or protected extranet The UDDI ervices role in Windows erver 2008 consists of the following role services: UDDI ervices Database rovides a central storage location for the UDDI catalog and the service s s configuration settings. UDDI ervices Web pplication Implements a Web site with which users and applications can access the UDDI catalog to search for Web services on the network. DW DW
Web erver (II) ole Originally, Web servers were designed to respond to requests for ypertext Markup Language (TML) files generated by client browsers. ventually, Web pages grew in complexity, incorporating images into their content, and then audio and video, and finally applications. Today, organizations use Web servers for a variety of applications, servicing clients on intranets, t extranets, t and the Internet. t DW DW

rint ervices ole The rint ervices role includes the following optional role services: rint erver Installs the rint Management snap-in for MM, which provides centralized printer management for an entire enterprise network. LD ervice nables UI client computers running the line printer remote (L) application to send jobs to Windows erver 2008 printers. Internet rinting Implements a Web-based printer management interface and enables remote users on the Internet to send print jobs to Windows erver 2008 printers. DW DW
Fax erver ole Fax ervice Manager application, which enables administrators to monitor fax devices, create fax rules and policies, and manage all of the faxes for the organization It does require the installation of the rint ervices role DW DW
treaming Media ervices ole The treaming Media ervices role enables an application server to provide digital audio and video content to network clients in real time, using TT or the eal Time treaming rotocol (T). The clients run a media player application that processes the content as they receive it from the server. DW DW
Windows erver ore is a strippeddown version of the operating system There is no erver ore tart menu, xplorer shell, no MM console, and virtually no graphical applications ll you see when you start t the computer is a single window with a command prompt DW DW
erver ore Use command line tools Microsoft includes with Windows erver 2008 or use MM consoles on another system to connect to the server few graphical applications can still run on erver ore otepad still works, so you can edit scripts and batch files. Task Manager runs, enabling you to load programs and monitor processes ome elements of the ontrol anel work as well, including the Date and Time application and the egional and Language Options DW DW
irtualization 2008 provides built in virtualization The advantages of virtualization include the following: Fault tolerance ecurity Disaster recovery esource allocation Training and testing DW DW
Windows Deployment ervices nables administrators to perform attended and unattended operating system installations on remote computers WD is a client/server application in which the server supplies operating system image files to clients on the network The WD server is also responsible for providing the remote computer with the boot files it needs to run and the client side of the application The client computer must have a network adapter that supports a preboot execution environment () With, the computer connects to a server on the network and downloads the boot files it needs to run In the case of a WD installation, the client downloads a boot image that loads Windows (reinstallation nvironment) 2.1, after which it installs the operating system using another image file DW DW
Installing Windows Deployment ervices WD is a standard role that you can install from the Initial onfiguration Tasks window or the erver Manager console The Windows Deployment ervices role includes the following two role services: Deployment erver Transport erver equirements for WD ctive Directory D D TF fter you install Windows Deployment ervices, it remains inactive until you configure the service and add the images that the server will deploy to clients DW DW
dding Image Files Windows Deployment ervices requires two types of image files to perform remote client installations: boot image n install image DW DW
Boot Images The boot image contains the files needed to boot the computer and initiate an operating system installation The Windows erver 2008 installation DD includes a boot image file called boot.wim, located in the \ources folder, which loads Windows 2.1 on the client computer. You can use this image file for virtually any operating system deployment without modification DW DW
Image Files The image file contains the operating system that WD will install on the client computer. Windows erver 2008 includes an install image in the \ources folder on the installation DD as well, called install.wim. This file performs a standard Windows erver 2008 setup, just as if you used the DD to perform a manual DW installation. DW
List of vailable Images DW DW
xternal D erver you must also configure it manually to include the custom option that provides WD clients with the name of the WD server DW DW
erforming a WD lient Installation 1. ince there is no local boot device, it attempts to perform a network boot 2. ends out a D request 3. eceives offer and then accepts 4. ets I address plus the 060 lient option, containing the name of a WD server 5. onnects to the WD server and downloads the boot image using the Trivial File Transfer rotocol (TFT) 6. Loads necessary software on M drive 7. User on the client computer selects an install image from the boot menu 8. Install begins and proceeds as a manual installation DW DW
reating Image Files with WD The Image.exe command-line utility in the Windows utomated Installation Kit (Windows IK) available from the Microsoft Downloads enter at you must boot the target computer to Windows and run the tool from the command line To perform an unattended installation, you must use unattend files n unattend file is a script containing i responses to all of the prompts that appear on the client during the installation process Use the Windows ystem Image Manager (Windows IM) tool in the Windows IK to create unattend files DW DW
ctivating Windows You must activate Windows erver 2008 computers within 30 days of installing them etail versions of Microsoft Windows include a product key that you must supply during installation fter you have installed the operating system, you must activate the product key by contacting Microsoft, either online or by telephone DW DW
nterprise ctivation nterprise networks, on the other hand, typically do not purchase retail copies of Windows orporate customers must now activate all Windows ista and Windows erver 2008 computers using volume license keys olume ctivation () 2.0 is Microsoft s program for automating and managing the activation of products obtained using volume licenses DW DW
olume Licenses Key Management ervice (KM) n activation service that runs on the local network, enabling clients to activate without communicating with Microsoft Multiple ctivation Key (MK) nables a specified number of computers to activate using Microsoft s hosted activation services DW DW
Key Management ervice (KM) You install the KM key you receive with your volume license on a computer, which turns it into a KM host You then perform a one-time activation of the host with Microsoft, using Microsoft s online services or the telephone For a KM host to activate a Windows erver 2008 client, it must receive at least five client activation requests within 30 days For a host to activate a Windows 7 client, it must receive 25 activation i requests within 30 days DW DW
KM ctivation and D By default, KM clients locate KM hosts by an auto-discovery process that uses D queries. When you install a KM host, the computer creates an resource record on its local D server. The record contains the fully-qualified domain name (FQD) of the computer functioning as a KM host, and the port number it uses for network communications, which defaults to T port DW DW
Multiple ctivation Keys (MK) MK is a single key that enables a specified number of computers to activate, t using one of the following two types of activation: MK Independent ctivation lients contact the Microsoft hosts directly, using an Internet connection or a telephone MK roxy ctivation Multiple clients send their activation requests to a proxy called the olume ctivation Management Tool (MT) DW DW
onfiguring g KM KM does not have a graphical interface; you use a script called lmgr.vbs, which you run from the command-prompt with the script.exe utility, to modify the operational parameters of clients and hosts The lmgr.vbs syntax is as follows: script :\windows\system32\slmgr.vbs [/ipk key] [/ato] [/sprt port] [/cdns] [/sdns] [/sai interval] [/sri interval] [/skms server{:port}] [/ckms] DW DW
Lab 1 erform two installations of server in a virtual machines erform initial configuration tasks Install active directory on both one as a forest root and the other as an additional domain controller. dd and configure additional virtual hard disks DW DW
