Installing Visual Studio for Report Design

1 Introduction and Contents This file contains the final set of instructions needed for software installation for HIM It covers items 4 & 5 from the previously introduced list seen below: 1. Microsoft Visio SQL Server SQL Server Management Studio 4. Visual Studio * 5. Visual Studio s Report Design Tools * These instructions are current as of March Regardless of which product you are installing watch for explicit version information from me. Obtaining and Installing Visual Studio 2017 Software Version You will download and install Visual Studio Enterprise 2017 and always select the latest version or service pack available. Obtaining the Software You will use the Microsoft Imagine store to obtain this software. Search for Visual Studio and select Visual Studio Enterprise Proceed through the checkout and download process.

2 Important: This software is issued with an installation key. Watch for it on the Details screen during check out. As before, pay attention to where your downloaded file goes. I recommend making sure it goes into your Downloads folder (see image below) but you can put it anywhere as long as you know where to find it when download is complete.

3 Installing the Software Look for the software in the download destination and double click the file to start installation Allow VS to perform some checks. Click Continue on the screen below:

4 Visual Studio actually goes out and obtains the rest of the software files and starts installing them. You will be presented with the screen below and actually don t need to make any changes or choices with it. If you think you may ever want to use VS to write computer programs you can select the upper most option. You will not need these for my class and doing so will extend the installation time, and you can always add things later. For the default, just click Install in the lower right.

5 Installation progress will be shown on the screen below: Completion will be marked with this dialog. I used the sign in option and my Microsoft Imagine account worked. But you should be able to use the Not now, maybe later option.

6 Installing the Report Design Capability Visual Studio can work on quite a few project types and many of them are presented as options in the screen just after the VS Installer screen. But the report design capability must be a lesser component and isn t offered during the normal install. Instead you have to add it after installing VS. Find the Visual Studio 2017 link in the Recently Added section of your Start button, find it by typing, or find it down in the V section of your Start button programs. Start VS. When VS starts use the Tools menu and open the Extensions and Updates link

7 In the window that opens type reporting services (without the quotes) in the search box (green circle) and find Microsoft Reporting Services Projects and click the Download button. You will go through a series of screens ending in a success screen shown below. If it is not already closed, you will need to close VS and restart it for the changes to be applied. After doing that you will be able to work with report designs and to complete the assignments. See the Getting Started with Reporting Services lesson in the module for how to do this.
