7 Chapter 1 System Requirements This document assumes that the workstation already has Solaris installed. Please contact the local Systems Administrator for assistance if Solaris is not installed on the workstation. Once Solaris is installed, a number of custom configuration items must be performed to create users and format partitions. NOTE: In Release 5, the EMS product name was changed from TN-Xpert to TN-Xpert. The user documentation now refers to the EMS Release 5 as TN-Xpert and refer to prior releases as TN-Xpert. This section covers the following topics: Section 1.1 Prerequisites Section 1.2 Create Solaris Groups and Users Section 1.3 Setting Quotas for TN-Xpert Section 1.4 Editing Kernel Parameters 1.1 Prerequisites Prior to installing TN-Xpert, certain minimum requirements must be met. The following table lists the minimum requirements for the Solaris-based server to support a sample system of 100 nodes. Table 1-1 Solaris System Requirements for TN-Xpert OPTIONAL: Hardware RAID controller Tape backup system Solaris 9 Solaris 10 Operating System Sun Solaris 9 Sun Solaris 10 Oracle Version Server ORACLE 9i ( ) or 10g ( ) Standard or Enterprise Edition Netra 240 Medium Configuration Processor UltraSPARC IIIi processor GHz ORACLE 10g ( ) Standard or Enterprise Edition SunFire T1000 Medium Configuration UltraSPARC T1 processors 6 core -1.0 GHz Memory 2 GB RAM, 8 MB of cache 4 GB RAM, 8 MB of cache Hard Drives 73 GB free SCSI hard drive disk space 73 GB free SCSI hard drive disk space Network 100Base-T Ethernet network card 100Base-T Ethernet network card Release Force10 Networks Page 1

8 1.1.1 Minimum Disk Space Requirements It is required that the PC for TN-Xpert has the minimum disk space required for each of the components. Table 1-2 Minimum Disk Space Requirements Name Typical Location Minimal Disk Space Required Description Oracle Installation /opt/oracle 4.0 Gigabytes Location for Oracle server software. Oracle migrdirectory /u01/oradata 2 Gigabyte (or calculated value) EMS Data Directory /u02/oradata 2 Gigabyte (or calculated value) EMS Index Directory /u03/oradata 30 Gigabytes (or calculated value) Stores Oracle system tablespace. Stores EMS application data Stores EMS applications indexes and high volume data such a PM. PM Data Storage Requirements The disk space required relies heavily on the number of nodes being managed as well as the amount of PM data being collected/stored. The minimum requirement is 40 Gigabytes which assumes managing 100 nodes, three TN-Xpert database backups and scheduled PM cleanup every 30 days Minimum Software Requirements The following is a minimum requirement for the Sun workstation that will run the TN-Xpert Server for Solaris. Operating System The Sun workstation must be running the Solaris operating system. Only Solaris 9 or 10 Creating Partitions for Oracle Data (Optional) In a later section of this document, the user will be instructed to perform a procedure for installing the TN-Xpert database instance for Oracle. A prerequisite to that procedure is the creation of files for Oracle to use for storing data. Although these files can be created in a non-dedicated partition, it is recommended that each of these files exist in its own partition (logical or physical). This will allow tuning to be done by the System Administrator or Oracle Database administrator (DBA). This is an optional procedure. Step 1 Calculate the partition sizes using the information in Table 1-3 below. Step 2 Launch the partitioning tool. format (or other system administration tool for creating partitions) Page 2 Force10 Networks Release 5.3.0

9 Step 3 Create the following partitions. 15 1.3 Setting Quotas for TN-Xpert In order to monitor disk space usage, TN-Xpert requires that a disk quota be enabled for the emsuser user on the file system used to host the TN-Xpert data directory. The quota must be sufficient to hold the minimum data size indicated in the table above for the TN-Xpert data directory. When the maximum quota value is approached by the emsuser user, a standing alarm will be present on the TN-Xpert server Editing vfstab The file /etc/vfstab must be edited and the entries for both /var and /opt need to be edited. Step 1 Step 2 Step 3 Log in as the root user. Edit the file /etc/vfstab. # vi /etc/vfstab Replace the dash - at the end of the FS type /var. and /opt with the letters rq Create Quota Files Quota files must be created in both the /var and /opt directories. Step 1 Step 2 Step 3 Log in as the root user. Create a file called quotas in the /var directory. # cd /var # touch quotas # chmod 600 quotas Create a file called quotas in the /opt directory. # cd /opt # touch quotas # chmod 600 quotas Edit emsuser Quotas TN-Xpert must have quota block limits set for both the /var and /opt directories. Step 1 Log in as the root user. Step 2 By issuing the edquota command, the default editor will be invoked and a file can either be created or edited. The following lines should be added to the file invoked by issuing the edquota command. # edquota emsuser Release Force10 Networks Page 9

19 Chapter 2 Oracle Installation and Configuration This chapter describes the initial configuration of the Oracle database and creation of the TN-Xpert databases on a Solaris operating system. Backup, Purge, and Restoration Utilities are discussed along with some basic Oracle administration procedures. Users can install Oracle 10g for either a Solaris or Windows operating system. For installation of the Oracle database server on a Windows operating system, see Section 7.3 Oracle Installation and Uninstallation. Refer to the following sections: 2.1 Overview 2.2 Oracle 10g Installation Prerequisites for Solaris Adding a User in Oracle Create Oracle Installation Directory Edit Oracle User Profile Install Oracle 2.3 Oracle 10g ( ) Uninstall 2.4 Oracle 9i ( ) Uninstall 2.1 Overview TN-Xpert server for Solaris uses the Oracle relational database management system (RDBMS) to manage both TN-Xpert persistent data and cached data. By caching network data in the local database, TN-Xpert provides optimal performance to the end-users and generates less traffic on the network. The TN-Xpert database also stores information that does not exist, or no longer exists, in the network (such as TN-Xpert account information and PM history data). In order to use the TN-Xpert application, the user must have Oracle software installed and must follow the database installation procedure described in this chapter. 2.2 Oracle 10g Installation This document assumes that an Oracle DBA is available to perform the Oracle installation and preparation for installation. NOTE: The recommended Oracle 10g version is defined in Chapter 1, Section 1.1 Prerequisites. This is the only Oracle 10g version tested with TN-Xpert. Release Force10 Networks Page 1

For upgrading from a previous TN-Xpert (a TN-Xpert release) refer to Section 3.3 TN-Xpert Server for Solaris Upgrade. This section describes the installation process for TN-Xpert Server on Solaris. Java Runtime Environment (JRE) is bundled with the installers, so no Java virtual machine is required from the target system to run the installer Launching Installer The following instructions are for installing the TN-Xpert Server for Solaris using the.bin install program installed on your Solaris machine. Download the TN-Xpert software from the Force10 website ( or from the Infocenter. Save it to a directory on a server that is easily accessible to all users. NOTE: You must be logged in as a root user to issue install commands. Step 1 Launch the server installer for Solaris. Step 1 For new installations, launch the server installer: *./server.bin. In the case of an upgrade from a previous release, launch update.bin. NOTE: Use the update.bin shell script only if a previous version of the TN-Xpert exists. 1a Launch the server installer for new installations: #./server.bin 1b Launch the server installer for upgrading from a previous release: Release Force10 Networks Page 1

38 #./update.bin Installation Information The TN-Xpert installer will show screens in the following order. Step 1 This splash screen appears for a few seconds as the software starts to load. 39 Figure 3-3 License Agreement Screen Step 4 The Choose Install Directory screen appears and defaults to the /opt/tn-xpert/server directory. An alternate directory can be selected by either typing in a valid path, or selecting Choose to browse the existing file structure. Select Restore Default Folder to reset the selection to the /opt/tn-xpert/server directory. Select Install to proceed. Figure 3-4 TN-Xpert Install Directory Screen Step 5 A Status screen displays showing the progress of the installation. The installation takes 1 to 3 minutes. The process can be aborted by selecting Cancel. Release Force10 Networks Page 3

40 Step 6 On the next screen, select the TCP port number and the Server TID. Force10 recommends using the default values for both fields. If the Server Port value is changed, it must be greater than Each TN-Xpert client installation must know the value of the TCP port used by the server to communicate with it. The Server TID should be one word and no more than 20 characters long. Figure 3-5 TN-Xpert Server Properties, Server Port and TID Step 7 From the Oracle Database Information screen, select the IP address and TCP port number to use to communicate with Oracle. Enter the IP address of the workstation that has Oracle installed as the Database Server Host Name. Typically, this is the same machine where TN-Xpert Server is installed. Force10 recommends the Database Server Port be left as the default. If the Server Port value is changed, Oracle recommends that the value be greater than Figure 3-6 TN-Xpert Oracle Database Information Screen Page 4 Force10 Networks Release 5.3.0

41 Step 8 Next, the Run Control Scripts screen displays. Select whether or not to automatically create run control scripts that will launch TN-Xpert when the workstation boots. Select Yes to automatically create the control scripts for startup and shutdown. Click Next to continue. Figure 3-7 TN-Xpert Run Control Scripts Option Screen Step 9 The second Run Control Scripts screen allows users to select the names of the scripts to be created for start up and shut down. Release Force10 Networks Page 5

42 NOTE: The TN-Xpert server is intended to run as a daemon process and automatically start up when the system reboots. This requires appropriate run control scripts be created in the /etc/rc#.d directories (where # is a number from 0 to 9). If the run control scripts are automatically created, script names in the format S[0-9][0-9]TN-Xpert for server startup and K[0-9][0-9]TN-Xpert for server shutdown must be provided. The installer first creates a script file called /etc/init.d/tn-xpert, and then creates links to it in the /etc/rc0.d and /etc/rc3.d directories. The startup script s sequence number must be greater than the Oracle script to ensure Oracle starts before the TN-Xpert server when the system reboots. Similarly, the shutdown script s sequence number must be less than the Oracle script sequence number to ensure the TN-Xpert server shuts down before Oracle. These run control scripts are removed at uninstall time. If the installer does not automatically create these run control scripts, the scripts must be manually created later. Figure 3-8 TN-Xpert Run Control Scripts Entry Screen Step 10 The Install Complete screen displays when the installation is complete. Select Done to exit. The TN-Xpert server can now be launched manually or automatically by rebooting the workstation if the launch scripts were created. 43 3.2 TN-Xpert Oracle Database Creation WARNING! Creating a database will destroy any previously existing database. If performing a software upgrade, database creation is not needed. Skip this section and perform the server upgrade procedure in Section 3.3 TN-Xpert Server for Solaris Upgrade. The previously installed Oracle database must have the TN-Xpert database added to it. The TN-Xpert database must be configured for specific installation parameters. This section gives step-by-step instructions on how to copy and install the TN-Xpert database files to the proper directory Create Database Directories The directories for the Oracle databases and the Oracle installation must be created prior to creating the TN-Xpert Oracle database. Create Oracle Data Directories The Oracle data directories can optionally be created in partitions created specifically for them. If specific partitions were not created for the Oracle data directories, they can be created anywhere on the disk that has enough space. This procedure assumes the partitions have already been created. Step 1 Step 2 Step 3 Step 4 Step 5 Step 6 Step 7 Step 8 Step 9 Log in as root user. Create an Oracle system tablespace file. # cd /u01 (or user specified directory) # mkdir oradata Change the owner of the directory to oracle. # chown oracle:dba oradata Create an Oracle TN-Xpert application data file. # cd /u02 (or user specified directory) # mkdir oradata Change the owner of the directory to oracle. # chown oracle:dba oradata Create an Oracle index/high volume data file. # cd /u03 (or user specified directory) # mkdir oradata Change the owner of the directory to oracle. # chown oracle:dba oradata (Optional) Check each user mounting point for /oradata and oracle.dba are listed. ls -d1 /u0*/oradata Ensure that these directories are owned by the oracle user and dba group. Release Force10 Networks Page 7

44 3.2.2 Create the TN-Xpert Database NOTE: Verify the TN-Xpert server is installed prior to making the following steps. Use the following steps to create the Oracle database. Step 1 Step 2 Log on to the target machine as the oracle user. During the TN-Xpert installation, a file called oracle-install.tar was installed in the TN-Xpert installation directory. Copy the oracle-install.tar from the TN-Xpert server installation base directory to your <HOME> Oracle home directory. NOTE: <HOME> is the Oracle user home directory where you want to extract the oracle-install.tar archive. In the default configuration, <TN-Xpert_Inst_Dir> = /opt/tn-xpert/server. Make sure you are in the Oracle user home directory (enter cd ; first). $ cp <TN-Xpert_Inst_Dir>/oracle-install.tar <HOME> Step 3 Step 4 Step 5 Enter the command below to extract the oracle-install.tar archive. $ tar xvf oracle-install.tar Visually verify that the emsdb directory appears in the home directory by entering the following command: ls -1 emsdb Change permissions for the emsdb directory. chmod -R 755 emsdb Step 6 Change directory to <HOME>/emsdb/admin/create. General example: $ cd <HOME>/emsdb/admin/create Specific example: $ cd /var/home/oracle/emsdb/admin/create Step 7 Run the script with all required parameters as shown (type entire command on one line). General example create_ems_database.sh <ORACLE_HOME> ORACLE_DATA_DIR TN- Xpert_DATA_DIR TN-Xpert_INDEX_DIR Specific example $./create_ems_database.sh /opt/oracle/product/ / u01/oradata /u02/oradata /u03/oradata Step 8 To monitor the progress from another window, enter the following command from <HOME>/emsdb/admin/create: tail -f *.log NOTE: This may take 30 to 45 minutes to complete. Once the creation is complete, log on to sqlplus using the emsuser account to make sure that the emsuser user is successfully created. Step 9 Start the Oracle listener: lsnrctl start Page 8 Force10 Networks Release 5.3.0

45 Step 10 Step 11 Log on to sqlplus as the emsuser user: $ sqlplus emsuser/emsuser@emsdb If the system is connected, the terminal goes to the SQL prompt. The creation is successfully completed. Exit. > exit Configure Oracle Automatic Startup or Shutdown at Boot-time Step 1 Step 2 Step 3 Step 4 Step 5 Step 6 Step 7 Step 8 Log in as a root user. Copy the file <HOME>/emsdb/admin/pfile/dbora.init to /etc/init.d/ dbora.init Edit the file /etc/init.d/dbora.init as follows: Change <ORACLE_HOME> to the correct <ORACLE_HOME> in your environment. Save the file. Change the directory to /etc/rc3.d Make a soft link S97dbora under /etc/rc3.d to point to /etc/init.d/dbora.init example: ln -s /etc/init.d/dbora.init S97dbora Change directory to /etc/rc0.d Make a soft link K14dbora under /etc/rc0.d to point to /etc/init.d/dbora.init example: ln -s /etc/init.d/dbora.init K14dbora NOTE: Force10 recommends using the numbers S97 and K14. If either S97 or K14 are already in use by other processes, then use any available number by following this rule: The number used in /etc/rc3.d/s#dbora must smaller than the number assigned to the /etc/rc3.d/ S#tn-xpert, and the number used in /etc/rc0.d/k#dbora must greater than the number assigned to the /etc/rc0.d/k#tn-xpert. Generally, TN-Xpert should start after the database is ready and the TN-Xpert should cleanly shut down before the database goes down. Step 9 If Oracle version is in use in your environment, you must update the dbstart and dbshut scripts to use the correct shell to allow Oracle to start up. The dbstart and dbshut scripts reside under the Oracle home bin directory. $ORACLE_HOME/bin example /opt/oracle/product/10.2.0/bin Add the following line as the first line in each of the files (dbstart and dbshut) to use the correct shell for executing the scripts: #!/bin/ksh Release Force10 Networks Page 9

53 Chapter 4 Redundant TN-Xpert Systems for Solaris Installation and Configuration Refer to the following sections: 4.1 Overview 4.2 Prerequisites 4.3 Set Up Redundant TN-Xpert Systems 4.4 Redundant Oracle Installation 4.5 Redundant TN-Xpert Server Installation 4.6 Redundant Oracle Database Creation and Configuration Setup Primary and Standby Database 4.7 Redundant TN-Xpert Server Configuration 4.1 Overview Redundant TN-Xpert systems are used for achieving fault tolerance. A standby TN-Xpert System hardware/software platform will be available for continuing operations should the primary fail. The TN-Xpert operations can continue on another piece of hardware with limited interruption in service should the primary fail. All data is kept synchronized between the two units in real-time or near real-time. The switchover between units requires some degree of user intervention. A redundant TN-Xpert system is based on database replication features provided by the Oracle Enterprise version. The replication mechanism guarantees that the standby site has the same data as the production database so, that in the event of disaster at the primary site, operation can continue at the standby site. TN-Xpert continuously monitors the primary and standby site status and generates alarms if problems are detected. NOTE: The Primary/Standby feature is only available with the Oracle Enterprise Edition. 4.2 Prerequisites Prior to installing TN-Xpert, certain minimum requirements must be met. The following table lists the minimum requirements for the Solaris-based server to support a sample system of 100 nodes. 73 Chapter 7 TN-Xpert PC for Windows This chapter describes the installation of TN-Xpert PC for Windows, the installation and initial configuration of the Oracle database, and creation of the TN-Xpert PC databases, including these topics. 7.1 Prerequisites 7.2 Overview 7.3 Oracle Installation and Uninstallation 7.4 TN-Xpert PC Installation or Upgrade 7.5 TN-Xpert Database Creation 7.6 TN-Xpert PC Upgrade 7.7 TN-Xpert PC Database Migration from R05.0[0 1 2].0[0 1] to R Exporting and Importing TN-Xpert Data 7.9 Launching and Shutting Down TN-Xpert 7.1 Prerequisites Prior to installing TN-Xpert PC for Windows, certain minimum requirements must be met. The following is a list of minimum component requirements for the PC that will run the TN-Xpert PC for Windows TN-Xpert PC requirements Windows 2000 SP2 or Windows XP Pentium III - 1 GHz processor or better Oracle 9i ( ) or Oracle 10g ( ) Personal Edition 1GB RAM 2GB Available Disk Space 100Base-T/TX Ethernet network card Minimum Disk Space Requirements The PC for TN-Xpert must have the minimum disk space required for each component. PM Data Storage Requirements The required disk space relies heavily on the number of nodes being managed as well as the amount of PM data being collected/stored. The minimum requirement is 15 Gigabytes which assumes managing 32 nodes, three TN-Xpert database backups and a scheduled PM cleanup every 30 days. Release Force10 Networks Page 1

74 7.2 Overview The TN-Xpert PC program is a standalone product. When media sense is enabled and the ethernet cable on the PC is removed, TN-Xpert may shut down. A message displays indicating connectivity was lost to the server. Use one of the following options There are to resolve this issue: Place a hub between the PC and the NE Disable the media sense on the PC using the instructions on the following website: NOTE: There are some side effects of disabling the Media Sensing feature. For example, if you have a machine with two network adapters and you have the Media Sensing feature enabled, if one network adapter does not work, it is unbound and associated routes are removed so all traffic goes through the other network adapter (assuming a default gateway is there). Also, if you are a roaming (portable) user, the Media Sensing feature is what provides the ability to connect to any network and have everything work without restarting, release and renewing. After disabling Media Sense and restarting, Windows still shows the Network Disconnected icon on the Task Bar and the ipconfig command still shows a Media State...: Cable Disconnected message when the cable is disconnected. However, the Network Interface is bound to TCP/IP. You can verify this by looking at the route table using the route print command and viewing the interface IP address. You can able ping the IP address assigned to the NIC. 7.3 Oracle Installation and Uninstallation NOTE: If Oracle software is already installed, skip this section and go to Section 7.4 TN-Xpert PC Installation or Upgrade Oracle 9i Installation Step 1 After the Oracle CD is inserted, the program will auto launch.
