4 Silent Installation and Uninstallation A silent installation, also called an unattended installation, is one where the user does not need to interact with the InstallShield wizard for installing ipassconnect. Instead, once the wizard is invoked, the responses are read from a script file and substituted in place of user responses. Unattended installation of ipassconnect enables you to quickly and efficiently install ipassconnect in a standardized, consistent manner for any group of users. You can also create a silent uninstallation package, which will uninstall ipassconnect without prompting the user. An unattended installation and silent uninstallation can be combined into a single package. This is particularly useful when you wish to uninstall a previous version of ipassconnect and then install a new one. A completely silent installation is only possible if your ipassconnect profile has been configured to suppress the End User Licensing Agreement (EULA) prompt. Your Account Manager s approval is required for suppressing the End User Licensing Agreement (EULA) prompt. Please contact your Account Manager for more details ipass Inc. 2

5 Silent Installation The procedures used to create and run silent installation depends on the version of ipassconnect used. For ipassconnect Version 3.0 Creating a silent installation for ipassconnect 3.0 requires two steps. First, the individual files must be placed together into a temporary folder. Then, these be repackaged into a single setup.exe file. Creating the Install Package To create an unattended silent install package: 1. Run the normal ipassconnect installation executable using the -r switch: <setup.exe> -r. For example: ipassconnect_v3.exe r 2. While this installation is running, and before you click Next on the first dialog of the installation wizard, create a temporary folder on your desktop called Silentinstall. This is a temporary folder and may be deleted after the silent installation package is created. 3. In Windows Explorer, browse to the system %temp% folder. (The %temp% folder is XP Path : <sys drive>\documents and Settings\<Current User>\Local Settings\Temp\<folder> Usually this folder name ends with.tmp 4. There are several temporary files in this target directory. You can sort these files within the \Temp folder by date to identify the newly created.tmp folder. 5. Copy the following core installer files to the Silentinstall folder on your desktop: setup.ini setup.inx setup.bmp data1.cab data2.cab data1.hdr ikernel.ex_ layout.bin DO NOT COPY the setup.iss file from the %temp% folder, as this file is not required. You will be creating a new one. 6. Continue with the Install wizard for ipassconnect. The installer will function as normal (that is, interactively) and no reboot is required after completion. A new setup.iss file will be outputted in the default Windows folder: For Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 2000: C:\WINNT\setup.iss For Windows 95/98/ME/XP/2003: C:\WINDOWS\setup.iss 7. Copy the new setup.iss to your Desktop\Silentinstall folder (where you copied the 9 core installer files in Step 3.) 8. Uninstall ipassconnect from the system. (No reboot is required after completion.) 9. Package the files ipass Inc. 3

6 Repackaging the Files You must use a third-party tool to repackage these 10 files into a file named setup.exe. There are a number of tools available that can assist in repackaging the files into a single.exe file. The following are some examples: Windows 2000 and Windows XP systems come with the free Microsoft iexpress utility (Start > Run, type iexpress.exe). Inno5 ( WinZip Self-Extractor ( this utility must be purchased and licensed. After these files are bundled into setup.exe, place the setup.exe into the Silentinstall folder. Performing the Installation To perform a silent installation, 1. In the folder Desktop\Silentinstall, run the setup.exe program that comprises the 10 bundled files, with the -s switch: setup.exe s This will now install ipassconnect 3.0 silently. For ipassconnect Versions or 3.1 For these versions of ipassconnect, you need not create any special files. The ipassconnect setup file supports silent installation. 3.41: To perform an unattended silent installation, 1. Run the ipassconnect Setup executable with these parameters: setup.exe s a s The first s a enables the installer to accept command line options. The last -s sends the silent install option. 2. The executable will now perform an unattended silent installation. For ipassconnect Versions 3.2 through 3.41 ipassconnect can be configured with one of three Language Installation options for ipassconnect versions 3.2 through Automatic Selection: Installs the client in the OS language. Force User: Forces the user to install in a specific language. User Selection: Enables the user to select the installation language. For the first two options, Automatic Selection and Force User, the unattended installation procedure will be as follows: To perform an unattended silent installation, 1. Run the Setup executable with these parameters: ipcsetup.exe s a ssi 2. The executable will now perform an unattended installation. For the third option, User Selection, a language code is added to the procedure. 3. Run the setup executable with these parameters: ipcsetup.exe s a ssi -<language ID> where language ID is one of the following: B_Portuguese: l0x ipass Inc. 4

7 English: l0x0009 French: l0x040c German: l0x0007 Japanese: l0x0011 Korean: l0x0012 S_Chinese: l0x0804 Spanish: l0x040a T_Chinese: l0x0404 Each code begins with a lower-case letter L, not the number 1. The executable will now perform an unattended installation. For ipassconnect version 3.26 through 3.41, a completely silent installation is not available. The installation will not require user interaction, but will display a status bar during a portion of the installation. For ipassconnect Versions 3.51 through 3.55 The ipassconnect profiles can be configured with one of three language installation options: Automatic Selection, Force User, and User Selection. For the first two options, Automatic Selection and Force User, the unattended installation procedure will be as follows: 1. Run the Setup executable with these parameters: ipcsetup.exe -s a s 2. The executable will now perform an unattended installation. For the third option, User Selection, a language code is added to the procedure. 3. 8 For ipassconnect 3.51 through clients, a complete silent installation is not available. The installation will not need user interaction, but will display a status bar during a portion of the installation. For ipassconnect Versions 3.60 and Later During an unattended install of ipassconnect 3.60 or later clients, the installer files are extracted to a temporary folder. In case of fresh install, the path will be: Windows XP:- C:\Documents and Settings\<Current User>\Local Settings\Temp\<folder> Windows Vista:- C:\Users\<Current User>\AppData\Local\Temp\<folder> For a silent software upgrade from a previous version of ipassconnect: Windows XP:- C:\Windows\Temp\<folder> Windows Vista:- C:\Windows\Temp\<folder> The ipassconnect profiles can be configured with one of three language installation options: Automatic Selection, Force User, and User Selection. For the first two options, Automatic Selection and Force User, the unattended installation procedure will be as follows: 1. Run the Setup executable with these parameters: ipcsetup.exe -s a s 2. The executable will now perform an unattended installation. For the third option, User Selection, a language code is added to the procedure. 3. Silent Uninstallation You can also create a silent uninstallation package, which will remove a previous version of ipassconnect from the system without prompting the user. Users will still need local administrator (or equivalent) rights to uninstall ipassconnect ipass Inc. 6

9 In the instructions given here, substitute the actual ipassconnect Profile ID for the string <profile ID>, omitting the brackets. If ipassconnect 3.x has already been installed on your system, you must uninstall it first before installing any new version. Use the procedure that is applicable to your version of ipassconnect. For ipassconnect 3.0 clients To complete a silent uninstallation of ipassconnect 3.0, you must first create an InstallShield uninstall response file. To create a silent uninstallation file, 1. On a PC where ipassconnect has been installed, run the following command: %programfiles%\installshield Installation Information\{AB6FFA58-F491-11D <Profile ID>}\setup.exe r 2. At the end of the removal of ipassconnect, the file setup.iss will now be found in the %windir% folder. Rename it to remove.iss. 3. On the target PCs which ipassconnect is to be silently removed, copy (through a script or other program) the remove.iss file into the folder for InstallShield Installation Information for the ipassconnect profile. (This folder is usually named %programfiles%\installshield Installation Information\{AB6FFA58-F491-11D <profile ID>}. For ipassconnect 3.55 and later clients Silent Uninstall option will not be available if the ipassconnect installer is re-packaged into a MSI format for deployment. For ipassconnect 3.55 clients, you need to create an uninstall response file to perform the silent uninstall. Refer to the procedure mentioned in the Silent Uninstallation for ipassconnect 3.0 Clients section. To perform an silent uninstallation, 1. Run the Setup executable with these parameters: ipcsetup.exe -s a s x 2. This will remove ipassconnect silently from the target PC. Switches This table explains the switches used in the silent installation command line. The parameters are case-insensitive. The Switch symbol "-" is treated same as "/" in the command line. Switch Comments -s (or /s) Runs the installer without displaying initial screens. Signals that additional switches are to be passed to the executable file (Setup.exe) within the package. This parameter is used by the self-extractable file, instead of the Setup.exe in the package. -a (or /a) Signals that additional switches are to be passed to the executable file (Setup.exe) within the package. This parameter is used by the self-extractable file, instead of the Setup.exe in the package. -s a s (The comments are applicable to the highlighted -s switch) -ssi (or /ssi) Silent mode will be used during the install. s is supported by InstallShield and we recommend using this parameter for silent install of ipassconnect 3.60 and later clients. The status of the installation process will be displayed in Windows XP. Silent mode will be used during the install. Although there is still information prompted 2012 ipass Inc. 7

10 Switch Comments to the user telling the status during the install, it doesn't require any user input. This parameter is supported by ipass, rather than InstallShield. -rb (or /rb) Force reboot at the end of installation. This parameter is supported by ipass, rather than InstallShield. -L[LanguageID] (or "LanguageID" tells which language is going to be adopted during Installation. /L[LanguageID] For example: Switch "-l0x0009" means that English will be used during installation. This parameter is supported by InstallShield and used by Setup.exe in the package. -s -a -s -x Silent mode will be used while uninstalling ipassconnect. -r Creates a response (.iss) file ipass Inc. 8
