2 1 Introduction 1.1 What Does This Guide Cover? 1.2 What Do I Need? 1.3 Before We Start First, we would just like to say thanks for purchasing a Carousel Digital Signage system from Tightrope Media Systems. We are constantly improving and refining Carousel to make it a better experience for all our users, both current and future. This guide covers updating the FrontDoor and Carousel software on a Carousel Server, as well as updating the Carousel software on a Carousel Player. Software Download Key for updates.trms.com. This can be obtained by ing support@trms.com with the following info: Your name Your organization s name Your current FrontDoor version number Your current Carousel version number Access to the Carousel Server and all Carousel Players. This can be either: Physical: Plugging a keyboard and mouse into each unit to control it. Virtual: Using a remote connection program 1 such as VNC or TeamViewer. Also, Carousel Players may become stuck on a login screen, unless rebooted at the end of the RDP connection. 1

3 2 Software Installers and Machine Types 2.1 Software Installers 2.2 Machine Types There are four (4) different pieces of software that can be installed on Carousel machines within your Carousel system. FrontDoor: This is the login software to access Carousel, it holds information regarding users and licensing. It will only be installed on your Carousel Server or Pro Server. Each machine in your system will only need one (1) of the following installers. Do not run more then one (1) installer below on any single machine. Carousel Framework: This is the server-side software for Carousel, used for creating content. It will only be installed on your Carousel Pro Server. Carousel Player: This is the player-side software for Carousel, used to display the content on TV screens or monitors. It will be installed on machines being used ONLY as Carousel Players. Carousel: This is both the server-side and player-side software for Carousel together. It will only be installed on units acting as both the Carousel Server and Player. There are three (3) types of machines that can make up a Carousel System. Each physical machine, will only be one (1) of these types. Pro Server: This is a unit that is only acting as a Carousel Server, generally running a Windows Server operating system. This will get FrontDoor and Carousel Framework installed on it. Server: This is a unit that is acting as both a Carousel Server and Carousel Player, running Windows 7 Professional. This will get FrontDoor and Carousel installed on it. Player: This is a unit acting only as a Carousel Player to display content. It will only get Carousel Player installed on it. 2

4 3 Update Instructions 3.1 Determine Carousel Server FIGURE 3.1: Windows Command Prompt ipconfig results Step 1: The Carousel Server is the one whose IP address you put in your web browser to access the FrontDoor login page. Some models will have a sticker on the front that will say Carousel Server, others you may need to check the IP address Substep A: To determine the IP address of a machine, you will need to open a Command Prompt window on it locally. Substep B: Then type in ipconfig and press ENTER. Substep C: Look for the entry labeled IPv4 Address, this is the IP address of that machine. (Figure 3.1) 3.2 Download Software FIGURE 3.2: Tightrope Media Systems Software Updates Step 2: On each unit open a web browser and navigate to updates.trms.com. Step 3: Once there, enter the Download Key you received from Tightrope Support, to access the available installers. (Figure 3.2) 3

5 FIGURE 3.3: Tightrope Media Systems Software Updates Assets Step 4: Download the appropriate installer(s) (see Section 2.1, Software Installers to determine the correct installer(s) to download). (Figure 3.3) 3.3 Create Backups (Server only and optional) Main Menu: Server Setup: Database Tools Step 5: On the Carousel Server login to FrontDoor and access Main Menu: Server Setup: Database Tools. (Figure 3.4) Step 6: Select both the FrontDoor and Carousel databases, and back them up to the place of your choice by pressing Backup. FIGURE 3.4: FrontDoor Database Tools If you choose The backup directory on this server the files will be located at D:\TRMS\Database\Backup under FrontDoor50-DATE-TIME.bak and Carousel50-DATE-TIME.bak. Step 7: Copy the Carousel Media folder located at D:\TRMS\Web\Carousel. This folder along with a backup of the SQL databases (Step 6) constitute a whole backup of the Carousel data. 6 FIGURE 3.5: Carousel Media Directory 3.4 Uninstall Current Software Programs and Features Control Panel Step 8: Access the Programs and Features Control Panel in Windows. Step 9: Uninstall any entries for FrontDoor, Carousel, Carousel Framework or Carousel Player on the unit. (Figure 3.6) FIGURE 3.6: Windows Programs and Features Control Panel 3.5 Install Software 3.6 Complete and Verify Step 10: Run the installers you downloaded in Step 4 in the following order: 1. FrontDoor (if the Carousel Server) 2. Carousel or Carousel Framework or Carousel Player (see Software Installers to determine the correct installer) Step 11: Repeat Steps 2-10 on all Carousel units within the system. Step 12: Restart all machines after the update is complete and verify the system is back up and running. You can login to Carousel via FrontDoor, as before. The Carousel Players have reconnected to the Carousel Server and are updating content. To check that the Players have reconnected, login to FrontDoor, enter Carousel and go to Configure: Players: Player Status and make sure all units have checked in recently. 3 Update Instructions 5

7 4 Separate SQL Server If you are running an advanced Carousel system where your SQL Server is on a seperate machine from your Carousel Server also complete the following steps to finalize your update. Step 1: Complete all the steps from Update Instructions. When running the FrontDoor and Carousel or Carousel Framework installers, there is no reason to run the SQL scripts. If you do, you will get an error. Simply ignore and carry on. Step 2: Copy the FrontDoor50-PopulateDB.sql and Carousel50.sql files from D:\TRMS\Database\Scripts to the database server. Your drive letter may be different depending on the directory chosen when installing Carousel. Step 3: Using a management console or osql command, run the FrontDoor50-PopulateDB.sql script on the SQL Server. Step 4: Using a management console or osql command, run the Carousel50.sql script. 6
