BECKHOFF Application Notes Configuring Beckhoff Products for an AB SDN DeviceNet Scanner with an SLC-500 PLC and RSNetWorx BK-AppNote October 2007 For additional documentation, please visit For further assistance, please contact Beckhoff USA support at supportusa@beckhoff.com This application note describes how to configure the Beckhoff DeviceNet Bus Coupler to an AB SLC500 PLC with a 1747 SDN scanner module. Use this application note along with the AB 1747 DeviceNet manual PN (1747-um652b-en-p.pdf, p ). This and other AB manuals can be downloaded at Beckhoff Automation Nicollet Avenue South Burnsville, MN Phone: / Fax: / beckhoff.usa@beckhoff.com
Overview Supporting Documents DeviceNet Coupler: BK5200, BK5210, LC5200 ftp://ftp.beckhoff.com/document/bustermi/bcoupler/bk52x0e.pdf Key Concepts A DeviceNet network can consist of many devices and controllers. An example network is shown below, where a SLC500 PLC is used to monitor and control several devices, including a Beckhoff BK5200 module. Access to the network is obtained by using Rslinx to load a driver for a 1770-KFD module, then RSNetworx is used to set up the 1747 scanlist and to commission the network. The document will involve the following sections: 1. Loading the 1770-KFD driver with RSLinx 2. Installing the Beckhoff EDS (Electronic Data Sheet) files in RSNewtorx 3. Configuring the DeviceNet scanner card s scanlist with RSNetworx 16 April 2008 Beckhoff Application Notes 2
Please reference the particular Beckhoff manuals for the specific Beckhoff DeviceNet product you are using. For other AB PLC s or scanner cards, please use this as a guide and follow the same process using AB documentation and drivers particular to those products. Mapping of data from the terminals in the BK5200 is byte aligned and there is an extra byte of input data called a status byte for the BK5200 itself that gets transferred to the scanner card. A word on SLC-500 and Micrologix data mapping: There are three different types of memory for program usage. I:x.x for discrete inputs O:x.x for discrete outputs M:x.x for registers that are used with analog/numeric value type I/O. They appear as directly mapped as if they are on the PLC. M files need to be transferred to N type files in the PLC. Status Bytes from the Bus Coupler can be mapped as M: type or I: registers. 16 April 2008 Beckhoff Application Notes 3
Procedure Loading the 1770-KFD driver with RSLinx RSLinx and RSNetworx software must first be installed to continue with the configuration. Refer to the AB installation documentation for installing and registering the software: Start RSLinx Start RSLinx from the Programs > Rockwell Software > RSLinx start menu group. Configure Drivers Select 'Configure Drivers' from the 'Communications' menu. 16 April 2008 Beckhoff Application Notes 4
DeviceNet Drivers From the pull-down menu, select 'DeviceNet Drivers' and then click the 'Add New' button. Select the 'Allen Bradley 1770' KFD driver 16 April 2008 Beckhoff Application Notes 5
Use the following settings Use the default driver name for the driver Close Close RSLinx 1747 SDN DeviceNet scanner module will communicate with BK5200 This driver will be used with RSNetworx for DeviceNet in the following sections to configure the 1747 SDN Devicenet scanner module to communicate with a Beckhoff BK5200 module. 16 April 2008 Beckhoff Application Notes 6
The PC running the RSNetworx software makes the connection to the 1770-KFD module using a serial cable with either a 9 or 25 pin connector. The pinouts for these connectors are shown below. For more details on the RS-232 interface module, refer to the AB manual (PN , pdf). Installing the Beckhoff Electronic Data Sheet (EDS) files in RSNewtorx RSNetworx makes use of EDS files that can be downloaded by going to and clicking the following links on the left-side menu of the website: DownLoads > Configuration Files > Bus Couplers. The EDS files can also be found in the directory, c:\twincat\io\devicenet, if Beckhoff s TwinCAT software has been installed. Be sure to click on the 'English' tab in the left tree on the website. 16 April 2008 Beckhoff Application Notes 7
Open RSNetworx Open RSNetworx from theprograms > Rockwell Software > RSNetworx group in the start menu and select Tools > EDS Wizard from the menu. Select 'Next' on the first wizard screen 16 April 2008 Beckhoff Application Notes 8
Select 'Register an EDS file(s)' and click 'Next' Type the EDS file to be registered in the 'Named:' field 16 April 2008 Beckhoff Application Notes 9
Select 'Next' on the screen that follows Verify that the bitmap graphic appears To change the graphic for the Beckhoff node select the 'Change icon' button shown below. 16 April 2008 Beckhoff Application Notes 10
Select 'Next' to register the device Select 'Finish' A screen appears that says Completing the EDS Wizard. Select 'Finish'. At this point, Beckhoff devices are browseable in the tree in RSNetworx under Vendors > Elektro Beckhoff > Communication Adapter. Configuring the BK5200 and DeviceNet scanner card s scanlist with RSNetworx At this point you need to know the revision number of your 1747-SDN scanner card. This example will set up a network containing two BK5200 s with both digital and analog IO to demonstrate the IO configuration of modular Beckhoff IO. There are two methods to determine how the Beckhoff terminals are mapped in the BK Use the Beckhoff manual for the BK5200 and determine the amount of data as shown in the figure below: (i.e. analog inputs, digital inputs, then status byte) 2. Use TwinCAT System Manager software, or free bus coupler mapping software available from Beckhoff support (see example below) 16 April 2008 Beckhoff Application Notes 11
Exam-ple BK5200 Node 2 6 Channels of Digital Output 8 Channels of Digital Input Mapping with Respect to Scanner BK5200 Node 3 2 Channels of Digital Output 2 Channels of Digital Input 2 Channels of Analog Output 16 April 2008 Beckhoff Application Notes 12
2 Channels of Analog Input Mapping with Respect to Scanner Beckhoff BK5200 modules always contain a status byte that is the final byte for input data, following all the data for the terminals. Data from the terminals is byte aligned, so if there are less than eight input bits, for example, the remainder of the byte is padded with zeros. Determine IO mapping with BKManager Use the Beckhoff BKManager software to determine the IO mapping within the BK5200. This software is available free of charge to help commission Beckhoff DeviceNet products. Call Beckhoff technical support to get the software. 16 April 2008 Beckhoff Application Notes 13
Insert a BK5200 terminal and its terminals by right clicking in the tree 16 April 2008 Beckhoff Application Notes 14
Examine the input image View the input image in the BK5200 for this configuration. Note that there is one status byte at the end of the inputs with bits that are defined for diagnostic purposes. Examine the output image for this configuration 16 April 2008 Beckhoff Application Notes 15
Configure and map the data Configure and map the data from the example nodes shown above. Devices in RSNetworx can be automatically scanned by clicking the online button in the toolbar of RSNetworx or dragging it into the network in offline mode. Click the online button in the toolbar, select the KFD adapter, and select 'yes' to upload the configuration. The resulting screen should look like this SDN Scanner Card 2. Beckhoff BK5200 (Node 1) 3. Beckhoff BK5200 (Node 2) KFD RS-232 Interface Drag scanner part number and revision to the network line diagram Click and hold down the left mouse button on the scanner part number and revision, drag the cursor to the network line diagram, and release the mouse button. A scanner graphic is shown in the right window. Do the same for the 1770-KFD interface and BK April 2008 Beckhoff Application Notes 16
Set DeviceNet Address Set the correct DeviceNet address for the devices by right clicking on them and going to the properties dialog for each device. With the above Bus Coupler configuration, the data is presented to the scanner such that the status byte is an extra byte for diagnostic use. I/O data in = consumed, I/O data out = produced. See the documentation fo the BKxxxx and KLxxxx Appendix A for further information. Before going further, the you need to know how many bytes are consumed and produced. Begin mapping the IO nodes Double click on the 1747 scanner to begin mapping the I/O nodes. The following screen will appear. Renaming the scanner At this point you can rename the scanner to a better name for your project. The default is shown above. 16 April 2008 Beckhoff Application Notes 17
Double-click the 'Scanlist' tab Double-click on the Scanlist tab. The following screen will appear. Move all nodes to the Scanlist For the Beckhoff DeviceNet nodes and I/O to be available from the scanner to the processor of the PLC, the I/O must be mapped to the scanner first in the Scanlist. Select the Beckhoff Node 01, then click the right arrow button or double right arrow button to move all nodes to the Scanlist. 16 April 2008 Beckhoff Application Notes 18
Move nodes to the Scanlist Click and highlight the 01 Beckhoff BK5200 node. Click on the right arrow tab to move the node to the Scanlist. Repeat this for Node 02 as well. When completed both nodes show up in the Scanlist as shown below. Edit Parameters Click on the first I/O node 01.Then click on Edit I/O Parameters to adjust the amount of bytes of data to be produced or consumed. Each node has to be configured separately. As shown in the mapping diagram and in the BK Manager software earlier, node one produces 2 bytes as an output to the scanner and consumes one byte from the scanner as digital outputs. 16 April 2008 Beckhoff Application Notes 19
Repeat procedure for Node 02 Click on node 02 and repeat the last step above by putting the appropriate bytes in the Rx and Tx size boxes. Click 'OK' to return to the Scanlist tab/screen. Click the Input tab Click on the 'Input' tab. This screen is where Manual or Automapping can take place. Click Node 01 Click on Node 01 first and the following Automapping screen appears Click on 'Yes'. If you would like offsets in the scanner memory you can select manual mapping and place the appropriate offsets in the scanner configuration. See the Rockwell documentation for this procedure. When finished the following screen appears. Repeat this procedure for the Output tab as well. Select 'Apply' and close the window. You have now mapped two Beckhoff DeviceNet nodes to the scanner for use by the PLC logic. When mapped into the logic the I/O point in ladder logic will be identified as, for example, 1747SDN. 16 April 2008 Beckhoff Application Notes 20
Select Summary tab Select the summary tab and you will see both nodes mapped with the appropriate Rx and Tx bytes. Both nodes should be active. Save As Select from the 'Save As' from the menu bar and name the file. 16 April 2008 Beckhoff Application Notes 21
